One thing I always love about the NYT is their graphics - case in point:

Thanks for posting. This really helps to conceptualize the U.S. federal budget.

Does anyone know what the "Crimes Victims Fund" under Administration refers to? It had a 659% increase year over year. It went from under 1 billion to just over 5 billion. What kind of crime victim would the U.S. government compensate?

Great graph...there is so much waste, fat in the budget...EVERYTHING needs to be cut but the only ones that matter are Medicare, Medicaid (health), SSI and defense spending.

Lets not spend more on education...money doesn't trump desire or "want to".

I say lets all admit that we have lost the war on poverty, despite trillions in spending we haven't moved the needle...and begin to eliminate program after program.

here's a link - there's a fact sheet at the bottom which is quite informative (I have to confess this is an item I'm totally unfamiliar with). It is a good graphic but depressing - as other posters have said I've no idea how you get elected on a platform of cutting defence spending (helping terrrists), cutting medicare (killing grandma (who votes)), and cutting medicaid.

My mother in law reckons we should have had single term 6 year presidencies which is an interesting idea. Perhaps there'd be someone who would be willing to get elected on the usual populist rubbish, do all of the above and then let history be their judge. It seems to me that under the present system an incumbent has about a year to do anything meaningful before they're fighting for their re-election.

Don't worry, we will cut them one way or the other...either we will choose to do or we will be forced to do it...if we wait till we are forced then the great American experiment will be over. If we choose to do it, they we can survive and prosper and lead the world.

We already spend way too much money on education. Money will never give our society the desire to acheive more - and as long as we have knee jerk feel good punish the working socialists in the WH playing Robin Hood, things will only get worse.

I need a hug.

- If you were wrongly fired or laid off from your job at a large bankin 08-09, they consider it a crime and classify you as a victim. Wink wink, nudge nudge.

I figured it had something to do with Native American Reparations. I know they were planning on adding a nice chunk of money for that purpose. With this much money flowing out of the government, it seems like it should be relatively easy to get some sort of dole going.

With a little research I uncovered this, "State legislatures may be eyeing crime victim compensation program funding in some states in efforts to meet substantial budget shortfalls in the coming year. Forty-eight states -- nearly all, in other words -- have addressed or are addressing budget shortfalls for FY 2010, and in 26 of those states, falling revenues are creating new shortfalls. According to the center on Budget and Policy Priorities, states' fiscal problems will continue into FY 2011 and beyond (see this link for further information http://www.cbpp.org/cms/?fa=view&id=711)
In prior years, several compensation programs' funds have been raided by legislatures. Reminding lawmakers that many more victims could be seeking compensation; that mass violence is always a threat and would require sudden greater outlays to victims; and that some "reserve" is necessary to prevent backlogs may be among the strategies useful in countering unwanted compensation fund reductions.

It looks like it is an undercover state budget bailout mechanism?
