Post a cover song way better than its original

This is my pick:

Original is the "more cowbell" song, Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper

Cover : H.I.M - Don't Fear the Reaper

Live and let die - Guns and Roses
Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers

I'm sure the fans of the original would cringe, but these really were great renditions of incredible songs.

And one that shouldn't make anyone cringe:

Hurt - Johnny Cash

1) All Along the Watchtower: Jimi Hendrix version is better than Bob Dylan original

2) Black Magic Woman: Santana version is better than Fleetwood Mac original (old old Fleetwood Mac, prior to Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joining the group)

Alien Ant Farm's "Smooth Criminal" is a go-zillion times better than the original version by the Gloved One, Michael Jackson.

Metallica - Whiskey in the Jar

Happy Birthday- My version

But neither comes close to The Dubliners' version. And isn't any version of a traditional song a cover?

I actually like the original Springsteen better.

Anyway, here's mine: Respect, written and originally recorded by Otis Redding but covered by Aretha Franklin a couple years later.

Most people dont know "Whiskey in The Jar" is a traditional Irish song, so you were not crazy to mention it. :)

Silly Love Songs - Replicants (originally Wings)
Running Up That Hill - Placebo (originally Kate Bush)
With a Little Help From My Friends - Joe Cocker (originally Beatles)
Not Fade Away - Rolling Stones (originally Buddy Holly)
Girl, You'll be a Woman Soon - Urge Overkill (originally Neil Diamond)

Hurt and Watchtower, mentioned above, are also dead on.

Depending on my mood, I could go either way on the Waits vs Springsteen versions of Jersey Girl and Metallica vs Seger versions of Turn the Page

Not better, but this band did a really good job with Don Henley's "Boys of Summer".
And they change the lyric, "Saw a Dead Head sticker " to "Saw a Black Flag sticker".

Agree, Manfred Mann Earth Band version better than Springsteen version

Pat Benatar's version of I Need a Lover that Won't Drive Me Crazy is better than Mellencamp original

On the reverse side, Dixie Chicks version of Landslide sucks compared to Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac version.

I'm a big Metallica but have also spent some time in Irish pubs. I did NOT like their cover of Whisky in a JarOOOOOO.
