Felt B16 2014 Bottom Bracket
Have had a look on the forum search and not seeing the precise answer to the questions so here goes... Picked up the above bike second-hand (spec here: http://www.thebikelist.co.uk/2014/felt/b16) I'm in full agreement with the cranks and chainset being horrible and flexy, but I'm not well versed in bike tech things and wanted to get some information from other current/former Felt B16 owners about potential upgrade routes for both BB and replacement chainset/cranks. I'd rather not speculate on what will fit and/or drop money on something that won't work.

Questions are: 1) what BB size does the bike use? 2) what chainset/cranks have worked well for others as replacements?

No requirements for power meter compatibility etc as using Assioma Duo. Thanks for any advice people can offer!

If I can put the two previous posts together;

your frame uses the BSA english threaded standard. This is a very common bottom bracket style and is the the main style that shimano uses for their bottom brackets. Here's an example of a modern Ultegra threaded BB.

http://bike.shimano.com/...ackets/sm-bbr60.html

Your bike was equiped with a older (and lower end) FSA square tapered bottom bracket and cranket.

My advice is to stick to a Shimano bottom bracket and crankset. I would imagine that upgrading to any modern Shimano crank and Bottom bracket (Tiagra, 105, Ultegra... pick your price point) would feel much stiffer that what you currently have.

I don't think there is any reason to consider a square taper bottom bracket.

Shimano's Hollowtech II is way better.

I have the same bike, replaced the 175mm fsa crank with a shimano dura ace fc7800 53/39 172.5mm crank (bought used) with ultegra bb6700 bottom bracket for bsa threading (bought new). works really well, though the fsa was not that bad

That’s great, thanks, I’m glad it worked. Agree the FSA probably isn’t that bad I have 105 on my road bike and prefer that.

Can I ask, did you get it done in a LBS and have the facing done, or just do it yourself at home?

I did it myself and it was about 30 mins of work. I had to buy the crank puller tool but it was cheaper than the LBS charge (was about $100 for labor). If you pm me, I can just ship you those tools if you cover the postage - they have been sitting in my drawer since then.

Next races on the schedule: none at the moment

There should not be a need to face or chase on a used bike.

That’s a very kind offer but I’m in Scotland so I think the international shipping would be pretty expensive!

Went same route on similar frame (b10), Shimano BB BSA 68mm 1.37 plus DA crank. Works perfect and is way lighter btw.
But recommend you a solid tool to remove the BB and not the plastic adapter, something like this

Good choice of bike. As others have said, switch out the crank and BB for a good Shimano one - there are lots of good value used/nearly new older model Ultegras out there, and I also swapped the stock base bar for something more aero e.g.:

and you're good to go head-to-head against far more expensive bikes!

It is, and it's a steal if you don't mind having a white one (I don't mind!!)

I took it to the LBS; it's not a difficult job, but I was scared of damaging the bottom bracket threads

It is very difficult to damage the threads.

Kinda OT:
Was thinking bout the swap too but kinda unsure if the little (if any) gain is worth the hassle since the old bayonet bar didn’t test slow.

Doesn't the B16 come with the semi-aero-shaped basic alloy bar? (Mine did, at least!)

Yeah semi-aero shaped alloy on mine. Link above looks excellent value for the base bar.
