How to see Uranus with the naked eye

He he, he he.

Apparently we'll be able to see Uranus this week--with tonight being the best. Unfortunately it will be overcast here, maybe we'll catch some cloud breaks. Closest it's been in 50 years I guess. It will be in the southeast sky and should be noticeably blue.

Cool. Going to bring out the heavy artillery and see if I can get some pictures over the weekend. I'd read about the upcoming opposition a few months ago but kind of filed it way in the back of my mind. Mars will be at opposition next summer and closest since about 20 years ago as well.

Gratuitous photo: Venus and Mars conjunction from two weeks ago.

Re Mars opposition: I believe it was about 10-15 years ago that Mars was that close and bright. I remember getting up before dawn to go to a duathlon, and seeing Mars looking like a brilliant red ruby in the sky. It was beautiful to behold. I stopped the car for a few minutes just to stare at it. Do not miss it next time!

Brings back memories of the hilarious "Big Deck" sketch on the Blue Collar Comedy show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KW5rhvmAu0c

"Nothing better than sitting on your big deck, lookin' at Uranus."
