Anyone know of a good light bright enough to be seen during the day? a USB rechargeable one would be even better.

The Bontrager Flare-r is the brightest daytime light I have ever owned. Brighter then my Serfus 80.

Hi Jordan,

I'm thinking of exchanging my 400R for a Quad Red through Dinotte's exchange program. Can you share any insights on the differences between the models? In other words, what are the benefits of the Quad Red?

On a related note, do you have any tips for mounting these lights on an aero seat post (P3)?

Here's my mount on a Speed Concept post. Not my original idea; I had gotten from another post on ST.

Try the Bontrager Flare R that also pairs to your Garmin. Can be seen from 2.5k

I'm pretty happy with the Cygolite Hot Rod (tri bike, aero seatpost) and Hot Shot (roadie). Both are rated at 50 lumens.

Front or rear? Wide angle is also important - No point being visible a mile down the road from behind and being missed from the side.

Hello CeeDotA and All,

Just got a Hotshot ..... Plan to cut off the bumps on the side and cleartape it to the seat post for maximum aeroness and perhaps gain a few extra mph using it as a photon space motor drive. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lSf0BL1mxA

Curious to see if the battery numbers are accurate ..... it is very very very yugely bright ..... do not look at it or it will melt your eyes.

I think the Hotshot will be adequate from the side with a cursory test outside the bike shop.

Cheers, Neal

I am curious, what did you do to get your 300R on to the back of your aero seatpost? Also, any chance that you have a photo of the set up?

Thanks.

Hands down, Design Shine. If you can get one. It is freakishly bright.

QuadRed has a built in battery. That's the really big difference. QuadRed is more of an evolution of the 300R than the 400R.

If you have a 300R, I wouldn't personally view the QuadRed as a meaningful upgrade. But if you have the 400R, having something with an integrated battery would be nice.

The trick that I used (and this is for DarkSpeedWorks as well) was to cut the back off the Dinotte aero mount, drill holes for zipties, and then use zipties to strap it around the aero post:

Basically, you use the front (meaning the part with screw mount point) to mesh with the aero post, and then basically make your own "strap" system to allow it to fit any post. I don't have any pics, because I use helmet mounted lights on my TT bike and use this on my road bike.

But does what I'm describing make sense?

Bontrager Flare R has a great irregular pattern daytime flash. Easy to mount on an aero post. I get comments from fellow cyclists all the time about how bright/visible it is.

Thanks Jordan. Your modification to the seatpost mount is simply brilliant. Disappointed in myself for failing to come up with that independently.

Turns out I have the 300R. The battery isn't holding a charge, so my options are to send it in for a new battery ($70) or exchange it for a new QuadRed ($150). If the QuadRed is substantially equivalent to the 300R, the smart money would go towards the new battery?

I can't imagine needing brighter than the 300R. Buying new, sure get a QuadRed. But for you, I'd say swap the battery.

Hello surfNjmatt and All,

The Hotrod Rear bike tail light (50 lumens) only weighs 29g and would make a useful pocket carried signaling device ..... for finding friends in stores or stadiums or on hikes .... day or night.

Also works for a bike tail light.

Awesome, thanks. I have a dinotte mounted on a round seatpost, and want to transfer it to an aero post. So l will try your method.

The Quad Red seems to be the king for a rear daytime light. Now, what about a front light?

Haven't paid that close of attention to the battery numbers, but the light certainly does last a while for me.

I wouldn't write off Cygolite (I'm fine with you writing off Cateye and Bontrager lights). I don't have any affiliation with them, but have had really good experiences with their lights and they make a super bright tail light (Hotshot Pro 150). Even with a much older model, I have had motorists roll up beside me during daylight to comment on how visible my taillight is. The site you linked to actually recommends the prior model as the best deal for a taillight (https://www.bikelightdatabase.com/best/taillights/), and the Hotshot Pro 150 is actually brighter than the Serfas TL60. I'm sure either would work fine, though.

As I said, I have no affiliation with them other than liking that their lights are really affordable and have given me rock solid performance over many years.

I agree on the Dinotte, it is very bright but also 3X the price. I think it also has a metal mount that requires tools, the Serfas does not require tools and can be switched between bikes easily.

Overall my advice would be to avoid most of the brands that are sitting on the shelf at your local LBS, suchas Bontrager, Cygolite, or Cateye: they work OK at night but for daylight visibility you need something more legit.

Here is a review site. https://www.bikelightdatabase.com/serfas/shield/

My Serfas TL60 definately causes cars to steer wider and also people ask me to turn it off when riding behind me. I usually use it in low mode blinky, it has high and low mode, as well as steady on high and low.

I have a couple of Cygolites that I have been very happy with.
I also recently picked up a niterider Solas 150, it is VERY bright and has multiple flashing patterns, definitely worth a look

I'm pretty sure the Bontrager Flare R cannot pair to anything. If I'm wrong, I'd like to know how. But I do love that light, especially for daylight use. I get many comments about how bright it is.
