Isn't this the whole point. The pet brings joy into a potentially depressing situation.

I don't know whether they're efficacious or not, but I do know that, here at the airport, I see them all day and they're a big scam. Or, rather, their owners are scamming the airlines. It's crazy and totally out of control.
