Slowtwitcher Racing LIONEL SANDERS In Zwift Live Event
Quote | Reply
UPDATE #2: I have been seeded to race Lionel Sanders in the qualifying race on Saturday March 24th. Top 4 advance - 3 Laps of Watopia Hilly Reverse. 11 days until show time! Times marked are US Pacific.

UPDATE: Lionel Sanders has been invited to participate in the live event. So it should be fun to watch considering he just hammered out 420W for 15 min at that sprint tri.

Shameless self-promotion below:

I know there are varying opinions on here about Zwift--what role it should play in training, whether or not racing on it is "real", and how people cheat. I posted about Zwift racing and CVR some months back, and was met with responses of "huh, cool", to "I don't know why you'd be interested in virtual rankings".

Well, over the last 5 months, I chased those rankings--participating in races every week fine tuning my tactics in the game, and incorporating them into my 70.3 training as best as I could. In January I entered a series of races known as the CVR World Cup, racing at 4 AM so I could meet my actual life obligations at work and keeping my wife from hating me and my training.

Yesterday I sealed my victory to qualify for Zwift's CVR World Cup in Los Angeles on March 24-25, and will be competing against other Elite qualifiers (16 time zone winners--8 men, 8 women), as well as selected participants in Hunter Allen's CVR Training Camp "Performance Bracket". The total prize purse is a minumum of $106,000, as they are still crowdfunding the purse until the event.

Being a triathlete, while still working full time, I would like to think I am one of the underdogs in this event. The other racers include Leadville qualifiers, former professional European road racers, and elite time trial/road racers. If only there was a swim before and run after--I'd have it in the bag!

The weekend will feature a number of races: a hilly race, and climbing race, and a criterium. If I can place high enough on Saturday, I'll race in the Elite final on Sunday. If not, I'll race against the other people who also didn't place high enough in the "performance" finals.

Regardless of people's viewpoints of Zwift and racing in the game, I would really love to have support from this community as I take on the pure cyclists. Hoping to show them what us triathletes are made of, and take home as big a slice of that pie as I can! The event will be live-streamed over the CVR World Cup facebook, as well as Twitch.com. I'll absolutely come back to this post and link when I know for sure where is best to view.

Note: I am in no way affiliated with the CVR group--just pumped as hell to have won my Zone and qualified.

This is awesome, congratulations.

A few questions:
Have you utilized zwift year round or just part of a winter training plan?
How many racers will you compete against?
I'm guessing CVR will provide Smart Trainers for power consistency across the board?

I've been riding Zwift almost exclusively (alongside TrainerRoad as well for specificity) since November 2016. I have around 10,000 miles logged in the game on my Tacx Neo.
There will be 20 men, 20 women in the "Elite" category--16 of us qualified by beating others in our time zone races over 8 weeks. The remainder are from Hunter Allen's training camp and are considered the "performance" racers.
And yes, CVR announced yesterday that Cyclops is the smart trainer sponsor for the event, so we will be racing on Hammers. We will also all weigh in before racing, as weight is a significant input in the game.

So it turns out we were in the same Group B (though for me it was only 5am), though I'm the B bracket. I should have been in the C but they placed me in the B, so whata gonna do. I joined late, so I only got 3 races in. I'm looking forward to the next season that starts in March, I think the idea of the league is pretty cool. I don't know if they'll let me switch to C or if I'm forced to stay in B since I won't be relegated.

I hope you do well. I'm definitely pulling for you!

Nice!! The B group was very tough! I'm pretty sure if you go onto cycledata.cvrworldcup.com you can change your bracket and zone in the "Races In" section.

Appreciate the kind words, and I'll do my best to represent Zone B in the finals!! The winner of B Bracket in our Zone is actually a friend of mine and a draft legal professional triathlete. Incredible athlete who really found his legs during this CVR season. Glad he was able to take the win in the B's!

Yeah, I'm looking at his race results on ZwiftPower and I'm not even close to his league right now. The guy that won the C's I've actually raced a few times in other races, besides this league, and we are generally pretty close. I've never beaten him, but we are usually in the final sprint together. But I guess he's now promoted to B, so that's someone my caliber.

I assume since the postseason is still on zwift, we'll be able to follow along on zwift power?

Congratulations and best of luck!

I just finished my first tough virtual training block with the Tour of Sufferlandria... I have a new respect for the focus and motivation the virtual world offers.

Please post ways we can monitor the events live if possible. I'm not on Zwift, but I am Zwift-curious so I might peek in.

Nice job!

I think I'm a solid cyclist but every time I've tried Zwift I seem to be pretty average. If you don't mind me asking, what's your FTP watts/kg?

Thank you!! I’ll definitely come back to this post with more info as the race approaches. It will be streamed on the CVR World Cup Facebook page for sure that weekend though. Coverage should be good!

I wanted to do the ToS but this series lined up during it so it would have been way too hard haha. Good work getting through it!!

Thank you!! It was a tough battle to take the win.

As for racing/riding indoors, i think equipment plays a role, and big fans in the pain cave. Staying cool indoors is very important.

And I haven’t tested my FTP in a month and a half, but it was 5.15 w/kg at the time of the last test. I’ve put in a solid amount of training and just did a 5 min test outside for Zwift Anti Doping (virtual cheating policing agency) and held 6.25 w/kg for 5 min. I’d wager my FTP is around 5.3 w/kg now as I’ve dropped a few pounds and seen some fitness increases.

Why does Zwift have so many acronyms and how are you supposed to figure them out?

What's CVR?
Also, KISS and WBR seem to be popular races.

I mean, I've done a dozen plus races and a few of each I think, but I still don't know what any of it is or means.

Is this competition the same one as the Thursday night KISS crit competition where they took best 7 out of 10 races, or something different?

There are a few different “groups†looking to build race communities on zwift

Cvr is a pay to enter, race series (do they profit from it too maybe). $ goes to winners and cool events like the championship series

Kiss has their own weekly crit championships. Doesn’t cost anything to enter and way less structured - just hop on and ride in as many races as you can

Kiss, WBR and others are zwift racing groups / teams that run their own weekly races.

In general the different group organizing the race doesn’t matter. Each have their own rules (re: things like starting all cat’s start together, or A start before B before C, etc, powerups, length of races, etc)

I race whatever fits my schedule, am indifferent to the team organizing

Just want to clarify that CVR didn't cost anything to compete--same as any other Zwift event. I did also take part in the KISS eCrit series and I'm sitting 10th (top 5 in North America East go to live event). Being a triathlete means my sprint isn't strong enough to crush the pure cyclist in that series. Great fun though!

Huge Congratulations - that is impressive and shows great dedication. You should be a beast in tri's.

Question: Where does this level of cycling ability leave you in triathlons? top 1%? Amateur or pro? Are you long course or short course?

Just curious more than anything else. I am an ex road guy (last road race was 2008) who is currently doing triathlons. I did my first Zwift race a few weeks ago and was surprised at the first 5 min effort required. The last 10 years of tri training did not help for 5 minutes at 400+ followed up with sitting at 300+ for the rest of the race. Was fun but i think i entered the wrong category! (Back in the day this would have been perfect but i am old now :))

Thank you! And I'm sure you'll get used to the effort required in Zwift races pretty quickly. I race a lot of guys that are "old", and they still kick my ass!

As for the question I quoted above, I'm an amateur, but I'd say cycling is definitely my strong suit in triathlon. I focus on 70.3 and have for 3 years, but my short course power is pretty solid. I did out-bike TJ Tollakson last year on his Dimond Marquise at a local sprint--definitely a proud moment haha. Then I split 2:10 at Racine which was a top-20 split or so in the race.

Can you please elaborate on how you use TR and Zwift in your training. I have used TR for 3 years with good gains. Although I am intreagued by Zwift, I am concerned about leaving out of the structured training of TR.

Congrats on getting into the race! Seriously awesome accomplishment. I can’t hardly fathom an FTP of 5.3 and I can’t imagine the work that went into getting there!

Also what’s your zwift handle?

Thank you!! Very stoked to be going up against some of the strongest in the game, and can’t wait to see what my legs can do tapered for the race. Been training hard and racing 3-4 times a week since December.

My Zwift handle is just Matt Gardiner [SAKARI]

I just follow a structured TR plan but I make substitutes for Zwift races frequently and include warmup/Cooldown to get a similar TSS and work the same power zones. For instance, if I have a VO2 max workout planned, I look for hilly races.

For recovery and long rides, I’ll usually let TrainerRoad Run the trainer in ERG and just watch Zwift for something more interesting than a graph for 2-3 hours.

For people who don't really know anything about Zwift racing or haven't seen it in action...or people who claim it isn't realistic or that drafting doesn't work....

I am currently working to get my friend (J. Gravdal) to the next live event for CVR in June. Yesterday we timed a perfect breakaway and managed to hold it for the entire race. He is in a bracket-style postseason playoff, and he had to beat R. Lyons to advance.

At 20:45 into the video, the peloton split side-to-side in the road, and I was at back and noticed R. Lyons on the opposite side of Gravdal. I told him to attack steadily, and he built up a gap of about 5s before another rider joined him. The second the other rider showed that he was willing to work with Gravdal on the break (by taking a turn off the front at 5.5 w/kg) he told me to move. I bridged as hard as I could to ensure no one came with (23:45 into the video). We held off the chase for 38 minutes to clinch the win for him to advance to the next round.

Haha, on the tag-a-long winning--I messaged him about 5 minutes into the break and told him we'd let him take the win if we made it to the finish. We just needed Gravdal to finish ahead of Lyons, so mission was accomplished. Yamamoto proved his worth every pull he took, and definitely earned the win.

i do a fair bit of zwift racing, i love it. a few questions if you don't mind.

- there used to be a guy who streamed live video with commentary on twitch for the kiss and ztr races. it was cool cause you could find out the race situation. does this sort of thing still happen?
- you mention 'chatting' during a race. how the hell do you do that? with sweaty hands and my hr at 180, i can't see how to type on my phone.
- how does one find out about special races and events? i use the mobile app and just look at events for that day.

thanks!

- I'm sure you're thinking of Nathan Guerra--he still does stream and does live commentary for many races!
- I guess it's just taken some practice--but my friend and I use an app called discord, to actually talk during the race. As for texting other people, I just keep it short and I have a towel and massive fans to dry my hands off as best I can! Interacting with people while racing is what makes it so much fun.
- There are some facebook groups that I am a member of where a lot of information is shared-- CVR World Cup - Community, KISS Zwift Road Race, Zwift Racers. Most every large event is posted about in Zwift Racers!

Bumping this post because shit got real. I'm 100% racing Lionel Sanders in qualifying.

I did a race today on the same course but there were 5 laps instead of the 3 I'll race him in.

Today's race by the numbers:
Time: 1:01:51
Course: Watopia Hilly Reverse (5 laps)
Distance: 29 miles
Ascent: 1,160 ft
Race Total: AP: 325W / NP: 355W
1 min max: AP: 523W / NP: 524W
5 min max: AP: 417W / NP: 417W
10 min max: AP: 403W / NP: 419W
20 min max: AP: 365W / NP: 391W
60 min max: AP: 325W / NP: 355W

Weighed in immediately after at 152.4 lbs / 69.13 kg. How do you think I'll do against Sanders?

Is it normal to weight in after the race?? I know I would lose about 2lbs or more at least with that kind of effort, mostly water of course, but the scale doesn't care..

And nice job, 29 miles in about an hour and two minutes with a 1k+ feet of climbing is pretty study. I have no idea how this stuff works, could you do around that on the road too?? What is the transfer rate from these speeds indoors to outdoors??

I stupidly forgot to weigh before--hard to remember everything for a 5 AM race. My zwift weight is set at 154 lbs though from my weekend weigh-in. I drank 40 oz of water during the race.

As for the speed--zwift favors big groups in their drafting dynamics. Front group was 11 guys, and we were all coordinated in our pulls, always with someone on the front at 6+ w/kg.

FWIW, I did my 40k last August at 28.5 mph on my TT bike on an out/back flat course on 317W. Zwift assumes perfect road, null wind effect, perfect position on road bike, and perfect drafting.

You will do well, but those extra watts are going to help him (even with his extra weight). My only questions is

(I pull posts like monty so dont beat me up on that...i hate the "quote" button")

So just so I'm understanding how a zwift race/ride works....when you coordinate the pulls, what does it look like on the screen? Like an coordinated paceline? Or just randomly bumping into each other? Also if someone is "pulling" do you really feel slight ease on the kickr as if you are truly "drafting"?

We were on Discord (a voice chat app) and I would just go on the front at 6+ w/kg with riders behind me, then when I was done, I'd say "pull through" and the next person would move up at that power.

The "feeling" of the draft comes with some experience in the game...it's not how you feel it outside, by the wind. You just watch your avatar in-game and know that you can ride at 65-75% of the watts of the person ahead of you to maintain speed. I would sit in the draft at 280-300W or so, then pull through at 400-420W for 20-30 seconds.

haha. Oops. I should proof read more often. My only question is how he responds to the surges of "road" racing. Not that he hasn't surged in races before, but the VI is typically a good deal higher in any Zwift race or road race that I do with much higher end spikes then I would ever do in a triathlon. I know he probably does them in training, but going flat out in the start should be interesting for him.

I am curious if a few can work together after a blistering start to hold off someone like Lionel. Then again, the dude has the watts so it will be VERY hard. Good luck to you! Must be very exciting.

I think after this season of road and tri I am going to do some of these races and try to get in next year. I'm not quite where you are at, but getting closer and ZADA verified already.

You're ZADA Verified? Solid! You would probably do well in most races then. Race this morning was relentless and my first 20 minutes were working hard to build a gap--we were never caught, so it was totally worth the effort. Incredible fun!

Lionel has been doing a bunch of races lately, and hammered out tons of VO2 max yesterday like it was nothing. He'll be ready for the high VI, but so will all of us other racers. Should be awesome just to line up with him. I know 5-6 of us will hang on whatever pace the front of the race throws down, so the climb will be the determining factor--it's 3.5 minutes long. Should be brutal! Definitely going to turn myself inside out to drop the others, or hang on for dear life. Won't know until we get there for sure which it'll be!

Will Lionel be riding his tri bike on the trainer?

As far as I know, yes. Definitely not in aero though. Garneau is an event sponsor, so maybe they fit him to a road bike?

I know he raced Zwift Canadian National Championship on his TT bike, and his intagram posts lead me to believe he always rides the TT.

Dying of anticipation over here, turdburgler!! You only question is.......?

haha.

Yeah. I got flagged a while back and had to provide power files and results.

Anyway, you are the one racing so best of luck to you and all of the others! I love good racing of any kind and this is a cool new format. Will be cheering for you.

How early do you get up and how long is your warm-up for the 5am races?

I get up at 4 AM for a 5 AM race. Warm up is lackluster and usually 15-20 minutes of light spinning.

For bigger, more important races, I'll get 30 minutes of quality in beforehand and make sure to wake up 90 minutes before the start.

The set up looks pretty cool, though I'm surprised they have the stations in a "paceline" configuration instead of riding side by side.

Also, do you have to ride a bike they provide? They brought in a bunch of identical bikes (Cannondales) yesterday. I guess it would make sense, but I would hope you would have time to place your saddle correctly and dial in your position.

Hey Jim!

I brought my own bike, but Helen’s Bike Shop brought a bunch of bikes for both good promo pictures and for the riders that rented bikes.

I actually rode for 90 minutes today on the setup. Really great!

The pace-line configuration is the best way for them to isolate all of the ANT+ devices from each other. At an event in Roanoke last year there were some issues with the bikes being side-by-side.

Matt (TriowaCPA) broke away from Sanders and Zimmerman with about 1.5 miles to go and won by 6 seconds. What a race. I believe there are two more this weekend that can be live streamed. I think he averaged 348w (4.9 w/kg) for 36 minutes. Not sure his NP yet. Average heart rate was 183bpm! crazy...

Matt and Lionel into the elite final on Sunday. Cool! Matt displayed big power in his heat today. More than Lionel or Adam Z could manage; especially on the climbs and sprints. I was surprised at the differences in HR - Matt's appeared to be at least 20+ beats higher than Lionel's most of the time.

Why were you surprised, do you actually know what each guys max HR is?? For all we know the guy with the higher HR could have been working easier, context....

Yeah, totally agree Monty. I just figured athletes at that level (both triathletes) would not have that high a % variance between the two. It looks like Lionel's avg HR was 143 (Strava). Matt's must have been mid 170s. Matt does appear to be a wee bit stronger than Lionel on the bike based on their performances in the heat race. Sunday elite final will be fun to watch!

I’d say Matt raced a bit smarter than Lionel. Lionel needs to let others do the work, or maybe try to surge away on the flats when his absolute watts can be used to his advantage.

That is the big misconception that people still hold onto. Their heart rates were set at birth, has not one thing to do with what sport they went into or how good they got. I know guys that could have had 190's in that race, been ahead of both of them and going easier. And I also know a guy who would have been in the high 130's crushing all of them too. Comparing HR is not apples to apples, unless you happen to know for a fact that two people work at the same exact numbers for the same speeds...

if you go to CVR world cup on facebook and scroll a little down you can find all of mens heat 2.

So seeing so high watt numbers from lionel, im unsure if he sees it as more of a training sessions, or if he knows he cannot win in the sprints and therefore have to try and push the pace early on. Only problem is it is so much easier to just draft in zwift.

It's a crowdsourced prize pool, viewers can donate, there is a mention of it at the beginning of the live cast.

I'm sure there are probably funds coming in from sponsors of the event itself, as well.

Excellent push by Matt late, but was caught by the group in the sprint on the 3rd race. So cool to see them all pushed by the group to PB's.

Many thanks for sharing Matt! Saw you live on both saturday and sunday! Major kudos and congrats on your brilliant performance! Would be awesome if you did a blog on the experience, what did you learn, how did you feel, what would you do differently, etc. Also interested if you got a chance to chat with the fellow competitors and for sure if you exchanged some words with Lionel. Lots of insights which I am sure would make for a super interesting blog. Many congrats again Matt! Greetings from Panama.

Another great interview, keep them coming!!!

I wish I could just spend a hour with Lionel at the beach, I could take 30 seconds off his first 250 yards going out through surf. Not enough to get on the front group, but guessing 30 seconds is going to be important at the end of the day...

Awesome performance Matt! Congrats. The two triathletes acquitted themselves quite nicely against the pure cyclists. Is Casey Schumm a triathlete as well? I recall seeing him running on Zwift occasionally.

Thank you!! Knew the sprints would be brutal on trashed legs. Made the climbs as unbearable for everyone as I possibly could.

And I’m not sure Schumm focuses on tri anymore, but he does do TT and some of his local sprint tris too! Strong rider, for sure!
