Trump flubs national anthem

Trump got lit up on Twitter last night over this.

He's a special kind of genius. The best kind.

I mean all that swaying, forgetting the words...it's almost as bad as kneeling for the anthem.

Apologies. Here's a much more accurate account:

I guess the question is, which story do you believe? after all they are 2 very different stories about the same thing.

Seems he doesn't know the words, which is odd because Trump knows ALL words and was great friends with Francis Scott Key.

If a President makes a huge song and dance about the need to respect the anthem, he opens himself up for criticism if he doesn't know the words of the same anthem.

Or, to use the Trumpist tactic, "But Hillary...". Odds on her getting a free pass if it had been her?

Seems obvious to me that the problem was that he kept lapsing into Russian and trying to sing the Russian anthem, then correcting himself. He's, like, a super genius guy, but choons can be so darned confusing.

Have you ever been reciting something that you know and stumbled on it because you were thinking about something else? Our family says/asks a "blessing" before we eat dinner together at night. We've been saying it for over a decade. Numerous times I've stumbled on it because I was thinking about something else at the time. That could easily happen to someone while singing the NA.

Trump is a busy man and could have had a number of things running through his head. "Does this suit make my hands look small?". "Will I have to miss a round of golf for this?" "Do I need to call the Russians to get some dirt on Oprah?"

Give him a break.

Seriously, It wouldn't surprise me if he didn't put much importance on learning and remembering the words to the NA.

David Brooks has an op-ed addressing what he sees in a similar vein. Discusses "lowbrowism" and Fox's Hannity etal, then what he sees happening on the left:

"We anti-Trumpers have our lowbrowism, too, mostly on late-night TV. But anti-Trump lowbrowism burst into full bloom with the Wolff book.
Wolff doesn’t pretend to adhere to normal journalistic standards. He happily admits that he’s just tossing out rumors that are too good to check. As Charlie Warzel wrote on BuzzFeed, “For Wolff’s book, the truth seems almost a secondary concern to what really matters: engagement.â€
The ultimate test of the lowbrow is not whether it challenges you, teaches you or captures the contours of reality; it’s whether you feel an urge to share it on social media.
In every war, nations come to resemble their enemies, so I suppose it’s normal that the anti-Trump movement would come to resemble the pro-Trump movement. But it’s not good. I’ve noticed a lot of young people look at the monotonous daily hysteria of we anti-Trumpers and they find it silly."

That's what you get from all this? Trump is like an ant infestation in your house. If you see an ant walking across the floor in your kitchen, you don't freak out and assume the worst. But when you see multiple ants walking across the floor, and in the bathroom, and in the living room, and every day, you can then safely assume you have an ant infestation, and you are right to freak out.

How many "ants" do *you* need to see before you accept that Trump is the deranged one, not us?

My disclaimer - Voted for Johnson (so neither a Hillary or Trump supporter), think trump is very bad for this country but unless and until he does something actually impeachable, think impeachment would be worse....). I recorded the game but missed the intro so when i saw FB friends gushing about Trump messing up the words to the anthem, I was thinking did he sing it? Oh this is a train wreck...

Of course that wasn't it, but I watched the video.

Sometimes before a game, or a race, I will also sing along, and sometimes not sing the whole thing. Doesn't mean i don't know the words.

And yes, I get that he brings most of this scorn on himself. If he'd just shut up 50% his life would be a lot better. But he can't.

So even as an Anti Trump person, I gotta say "meh," and criticism here dilutes criticism of more important issues.

YMMV of course.

It's a bad look. It's difficult to tell if he is only partially singing, or if he forgot the words, or he's having trouble with echo in the stadium (which can really suck), etc.

But the problem is that he looks like he's forgetting and possibly getting some words wrong, he can't keep his hand still on his chest, and he's spent a shit ton of time crapping on NFL players for not honoring the anthem. If you're going to go out there and make the grand gesture, you've gotta sing that anthem loud and strong, or remain completely stoic. You can't go half and half, without inviting criticism.

Good question, so, I looked it up. POTUS traditionally attends the Army/Navy game, but, you are right - not much of a history of attending this game.

I dunno. Well, I did comment on the Championship Game thread that this was one location where he could get a prolonged ovation. SEC country is Trump-land.

Trump didn't get a good reception in Atlanta. Not really surprising after what he said about the city.

Fans projected Fuck Trump onto the stadium and booed him.

Well this is admittedly true, though most Americans didn't publicly rail on the protesting athletes for disrespecting the anthem.

Bingo. What better place to come to stroke his ego. Didn't even have the decency to give a rats ass about singing the anthem. I live in the heart of SEC farm country and work not far from where the game was played. Doesn't stop people in the LR telling me I'm clueless about what conservatives really think. Fans projected Fuck Trump onto the stadium and booed him.

Well that was also that Bama player who's on tape yelling Fuck Trump but now has changed his story to Fuck Georgia.

How many "ants" do *you* need to see before you accept that Trump is the deranged one, not us?

Why does it have to be an either or question?

That's not what I saw and heard in the video of his appearance. According to the New York Times he received "loud cheers and a smattering of boos." And that's from a left wing newspaper. Newsweek is a joke, as evidenced by their recent Trump related headlines.

He's a special kind of genius. The best kind.

I mean all that swaying, forgetting the words...it's almost as bad as kneeling for the anthem.

Most Americans can't do it, why are you singling him out?

Well this is admittedly true, though most Americans didn't publicly rail on the protesting athletes for disrespecting the anthem.

Well Carl Lewis should know, he listened to it enough times when he was stealing medals from clean athletes...

I had a high school teacher give us a pop quiz that was simply to write out the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner from memory. I don't think anyone got it completely right.

Why was Trump even there? Not a game POTUS usually attends, he seems to dislike football in general, and he thinks Atlanta is disgusting. Was the Waffle House calling that strong? I wish he would have trolled the TDS'ers by tweeting his presence motivated the two teams to play the greatest college football championship ever.

Good question, so, I looked it up. POTUS traditionally attends the Army/Navy game, but, you are right - not much of a history of attending this game.

I dunno. Well, I did comment on the Championship Game thread that this was one location where he could get a prolonged ovation. SEC country is Trump-land.

Here is a list of POTUS football game attendances: https://www.sbnation.com/...ational-championship

Hard for me to criticize him for this. If I was POTUS, I would go to any and every sporting event I felt like. Though the security concerns would drive my Secret Service detail nuts.

Only thing I thought was odd about attending the game was going out on the field for the anthem. Normally, they're sitting in a box and half the stadium doesn't even know they are at the game. This was all about Trump being the center of attention.

I could be wrong but don't remember and I would think it would be due to the security.

That's how you remember it?

No wonder there is a glaring issue with objectivity.

Reminds me of an exchange on Facebook a few months ago. A friend (a Duffy-esque "I'm not a Trump supporter but.." guy) posted a news story about Trump meeting the caskets of fallen troops back as they returned to Dover AFB. A woman responded that "You'd never have seen Hussein Obama doing that" (notice how certain people always like to make sure they use his middle name, or a misspelled version of "Barack"?).

Several people, myself included, posted easily-Googled links to stories where Hussein Obama had, indeed, done exactly the same thing during his term.

Her response was that Obama was obviously only there for the photo-op.

Maybe he was moved by the moment and couldn't sing.

Well, it was awesome to see two well deserving SEC teams play for the National Championship. That would explain it. :)

You're a singer, can you sing when you get emotional? Not me, I go on vapor lock.

Good point. There are certain lines in a couple of songs that I used to sing that would get me choked up.

I think it is more likely he was having a movement than being moved.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.
