Finally got a mountain bike....
...after not having one for almost 30 years I finally got a mountain bike.

Duffy Jr had his 13th birthday and we got him a new mountain bike and in the process ended up getting bike for myself and Mrs. Duffy as well (so we can all ride together!!!).

Holy shit! The one I got is the most badass thing that I don’t really need that I’ve ever had!

When I ride it I feel like I could conquer a civilization, destroy the universe or possibly even get an erection.

But god damn those thing are expensive. We did get a special-buy-three-refinance-your-house-deal.

Oh, and mountain biking is really hard.

PS: go eat dicks, BLeP, this is Lavender Room material.

You suck Sanuk! It was my turn to use the #metoo and you jumped in front of me. Why do you always do this? You ruined my whole week!

By the way - Well done! That made me laugh

In 1989 the wife and I road tripped up to San Fran and in Mill Valley bought a red tshirt with white lettering "mountain biking is not a crime". I wore that thing proudly until my friend John Pavlat saw it and said "the way you ride a mountain bike it is a crime".

That's awesome!
In the middle of my triathlon days I borrowed a friend's bike and we went to the local trails...

...and got completely destroyed and humbled on beginner tracks. It was like I had never ridden a bike before.

I didn't ride any more because I had limited time and was too focused on tri, but really want to give it another go sometime. I just love doing things that I really suck at!

Long Chile was a silly place.

You’re gonna love it. Such a thrill, so challenging, so relaxing, generally quiet with some solitude.

It’s the only thing I do anymore where my head goes completely blank, only concentrated on exactly what’s in front of me in that moment. Buddhists might call that mindfulness; for me, it’s certain peace, perhaps in the same way surfing is for you. Trout fishing used to be that as well, and I think I need to start doing that again, too.

I got mine about 7 years ago and have never looked back. Last 6 triathlon I have done have been Xterra types. And yes, MTB riding is harder than shit. Your Heart Rate never goes down, everything seems to only go up, and those huge plates for gears never seem to be enough in spots. But everywhere you ride is cool and new, and if you ever decide to race again, even that is cool.

What did you get, hardtail, full suspension, carbon, aluminum, god forbid, steel??

Just got back from a 2 hour mtb ride. It might take a few weeks to get the hang of your new bike in the dirt, especially if you got a 29er, be patient until you get use to the feel .

I road-ride once a week just to hang with old friend, The rest is all off-road it is so much funner and more challenging!

Enjoy! IMO the funnest sport!

No I haven't, but Dan followed me into Xterra a couple years ago and he did it, had a challenge with Tinley I think. He said it was soooo hard he almost had a heart attack and died, for real...I have run that trial several times, have to figure there is some 20% grade in there, can't imagine having to race it on a bike and then run it!!!

Just got it so I’ve only been to Elings Park and off the road along Modoc. Yesterday I rode from my house downtown to Elings. I tried to climb the single track up Elings from off of Las Positas. Made it about 3/4 of the way up, gassed out and fell over. Went back down and when I got to the bottom I almost puked.

Want to do Jesusita and Romero. With the wife and kid along we need to find the easiest stuff possible until our collective skill and fitness levels get better. I’d like to I ride up and down (rather than drive up and ride down, which is fun too). Any suggestions for easy rides would be great.

This summer we will probably do the Mammoth thing.

We all got Trek Bikes.

Mine is a Top Fuel 9.8 - full carbon everything (everything) - full suspension

Wife’s is Pro Caliber 9.8 - Carbon - hardtail

Son’s is a Marlin 5 - hardtail - aluminum (he’s not full grown yet so...)

Local shop is a Trek dealer and he gave us a pretty good deal since we bought all three at once.

Playing around Elings will build your skill level quickly.

Jesusita is tough...Romero is better for starting out, but you still have the "anaerobic warmup" first 1/2 mile...but, after that it's a bit more "tame" from a climbing standpoint (I used to do it on a MTB tandem with my wife :-). Of course, once you start getting more confident, you can try coming down the single-track trail as well :-)

If you want to take in some flat and ocean cliff-top stuff, come out to Ellwood and ride the bluffs and through the Monarch refuge...all the way to UCSB. You can park in the lot across Hollister from Ellwood School.

If you don't mind driving a bit further up the pass, go into Paradise road. There are loops you can do out of Upper Oso, or you can park at the end of Paradise and then ride the dirt road to Gibraltar Dam. Can even go further past the dam to the old quicksilver mine ruins...or, ride up Angostura Rd. ("dirt Gibraltar"). LOTS of options in the back country :-)

Mountain biking is the worst thing I've ever done...

My family never sees me, my gpa tanked in high school, I have to do laundry too much... ;)

In all seriousness though, its one of the most influential things that has happened to me during my life. It's my escape now. I find it therapeutic, even when I'm racing or going as hard and fast as I can.

I've made a ton of great friends through it as well.

Triathlon has ebbed and flowed in my life. Running even more so. Mountain biking will never cease to be a part of my life.

P.S.- Sweet bikes :)

That’s how I️ always felt walking into T1 with a P3, but at a quarter of the average age of racers. Always got a few weird looks.

In your case, I️ don’t see anything wrong with it though. If you can do it, do it and get the nice bike. It’s more fun being on nice stuff than crappy stuff :)

Picked up a mountain bike couple years ago when finally accepted the fact I had run out of cartilage in my knees and needed to back off from running. (inspired by W. Bush) Thought I can bike how hard can this be - but not really similar to biking at all, more like skiing, wrestling, parkour kind of thing. Now road biking seems like such drudgery.
Bought a Trek Stache and really love it.
There a great dirt community here and have gotten into trail building and maintenance as well.

How do you think I feel on my $8000 one??? At least I would win or come out in the lead groups in most Xterra type races, so for a couple minutes it looked like I belonged on that bike. As the parade of younger, faster, better riders would go by me I would just mumble that my gears were not working well. you suck! As a crappy swimmer and fastish MTB guy, Xterra was torture owing to the herd ahead that I needed to get by on singletrack. If I decide to race some more, that would be the one thing that motivate me to learn to swim.

Well, I have found that if I need to re-start on a steep hill (almost all the trails around here are steep) I have a hard time clipping in.

I was considering a flats/clipless hybrid like these...

Those are fine. The ability to restart on a hill and clip in is something that can be taught (there are some subtle things to be aware of) and practiced. Make sure the releases aren't too tight...I set mine super loose on the MTB for better release and easier entry.

Platform doesn't really help much. At least not that size. I actually find platforms reduce my ability to catch and release effectively. Tom has it right- set the release tension lower. It's why I prefer Time ATACs (even though they have fallen out of favor) perfect release and clip tension. But the technique if you miss you clip is to put the cleat in front of the catch mechanism, so it kinda jams. Clipping gets easier as your cleats get broken in.

The pedals are old, did you keep the same cleats? It just takes practice. I crashed more times than I care to admit, all because of not unclipping in time. One times I tore my left cheek off when I landed on what I THOUGHT was a lovely pile of leaves... but it had a huge limestone rock hidden under it.

Same pedals, shoes and cleats I used with the fixie.

Unclipping isn’t the issue. It’s clipping back in and going when on a steep climb that’s a problem.

I am so torn on picking up a procaliber (hardtail) and a top fuel.

Well if you read the whole thread you’d know that I bought my wife the pro caliber :)

That bike has an interesting frame/seat tube interface that acts sort of like rear suspension. I was skeptical about it so I rode it, then road a carbon hardtail (same wheels) and compared. You can definitely tell the difference.

Quote:
Have you weighed the bike?

No but there’s a guy online who weighed his. Little searching you should be able to find it.

The wife’s bike definitely feels lighter. It’s a smaller frame size, but lacks the carbon wheels, bars and stem that mine has.

My son has an even smaller Marlin 5 aluminum bike and it’s a fucking tank in comparison so there’s that.

Quote:
Can you feel pedal induced bob?

It has a suspension lockout level so when riding on roads or climbing I have it locked.

Quote:
Doe the rear suspension truly work when you are braking?

It seems to. I have nothing to compare it too being this is my first full suspension bike (and first mountain bike since 1988).

Clip in on one side. Start pedaling. Use the middle of your shoe on the non-clipped in side until you get enough momentum to clip in.

Alternatively - don't stop in the first place....

Well, I have found that if I need to re-start on a steep hill (almost all the trails around here are steep) I have a hard time clipping in.

I was considering a flats/clipless hybrid like these...

http://bike.shimano.com/...pedals/pd-m8020.html

I have these on my ''play'' bike and XTR on my Scalpel. I find the little platform helps a touch with foot stability, but I also think its a little tougher to clip in really fast with them.
Shimano makes the best pedals period. I have a pair in my parts bin that were on my single speed for many years, they are cosmetically destroyed but the bearings are smooth and they still work great.
As far as a dropper post.......you spent to coin on an awesome bike, now go and put one on and realize what a game changer they are in technical and steep terrain. It's money well spent, and the taller you are the more you'll appreciate it.

Sometimes when you mess up on steep hills, it is hard just to click back in. I usually don't worry about this i just start peddling until I get up enough speed and then I click back in.

I don't know if the shop set you up right on your bikes. But a bad set up will make a $5000 bike ride like $1000 bike. I can't tell you how many newbies I have seen out on the trails with horrible set ups. Especially suspension wise.

A friend who rides with us on occasion was talking about getting a new bike. She was riding a Specialized Rumor for a couple of years, it seemed like a nice bike but she wasn't liking it. She swapped bikes with my wife's (Santa Cruz 5010) for a ride, she could not believe the difference. My wife came back ask: "Who set up your suspension?!" Apparently a shop that new little about setting up mountain bikes. So we spent about 15 mins. setting up her suspension and tire pressure.
On pretty gnarly rides she was using less than half of her travel and this petite girl was running 35lbs of air in her tires- it was brutle. We changed everything around for the better and now she is totally in love with her bike.

This might help as a starting point:
For my tires (29 - 2.30) I run 21 lbs front 25lbs rear with all my bike gear on including camelbak I weigh 177lbs.
My wife tires (27.5 - 2.30) 19lbs front 21 rear - she comes in around 130Lbs.
For a newbie I would reccommend just riding with tubes. If you find you are getting a lot of flats (more than once every 2 months) check in to going tubless.

Here is good video for suspension set up:

I did the research for about a year and settled on this.

You can't be the performance, weight and especially the price for this high end of a bike. And....it is direct ship. After order, mine was at my door in 3 days and I've found their customer service is off the hook!

Prior to this bike I rode a Santa Cruz and then a Pivot.

Well, I agree with this. That’s why I bought a good bike. But I have seen others express negative feelings toward people (dentist comment in this thread eluded to it) who are novices with “pro” equipment.

A friend of mine has a $100,000 boat, top end wetsuits, brand new high performance surfboards and takes me surfing to marqui spots that are only accessible by boat, but he can’t surf very well.

Believe me I wish I could afford an $8k MTB, and I have no problems with dudes riding $12k super bikes and going 14 miles an hour in races. Those were they guys that indirectly used to pay my salary!!

One of the benefits of having been a pro for about 15 years in this sport is that I made a lot of contacts and had some very good long term contracts that have extended in to my AG life. I paid something for the bike, in fact I think it was the first bike I had bought since I bought a Raleigh pro to compete in the very first Kona Ironman back in 80 or so. Saw that was the bike Dave Scott had won it on, so figured it ws ok and it would not be the bike holding me back, still have that same feeling about most bikes.

So two bikes in about 40 years that I actually paid for, I'm a pretty lucky guy. Not a silver spoon, but maybe you could call that a copper spoon I was gifted with..

Ha! Good for you. :)

Nothings no wrong with knowing the right people. I’ve bought a few bikes off the show room floor, but not many. Most, I buy used, or build up in parts. The bikes I have, or had, were always super nice, but I paid little compared to the retail price. I’ll be honest though, I have a mountain bike that is full XTR and a couple road bikes that are campy record and red 22.... reality is, I know it is marginally better than today’s 105 group or the stellar XT group. It’s more about lusting after what you want. I decided long ago I would love bikes my whole life, so I embrace it. My fitness goes up and down, and that is frustrating. Although, the love for the bike never changes. I love building up bikes and making them my own.

If you take pity on your son for his anchor of a bike, the marlins are pretty easy to lighten up. Find a nice crankset, cassette, and assuming 26" wheels are cheap if you know where to look. The frames arent too bad, but those three components are by far the worst weight offenders. My wife and several friends have/had the lower end hardtails, and we've fixed them up pretty good with basic upgrades. Now, if you're anticipating a quick out growing of the bike, forget the advice, you wont get the money back when you resell.

Fall Outerbike only. But yes, it is a great time. TWE and Mag 7 are two of my favorite rides anywhere. Mag 7 might even be better if it wasnt for the dirt road at the end.

Doe the rear suspension truly work when you are braking?

So the suspension lockout broke and the bike is in the “always on” setting (suspension is bouncy).

Seated pedaling there is absolutely zero bouncing from either front or rear. Amazing. If I stand and hammer there is some bounce.

Brought bike to the shop to get the lockout mechanism replaced. They called Fox (maker of the suspension system) to get a replacement for the lever thingy that broke inside somehow. Phone conversation went like this....

Bike Shop - “Customer has a new bike and the suspension lockout....”

Fox - “We’ll send you a new one right away.”

Bike Shop - “The customer says...”

Fox - “Got it, we’re sending a new one, you’ll have it tomorrow.”

Apparently Fox is aware that there is an issue.

That is too bad about the lockout breaking. These things can happen.
Glad to hear it is solid under pedalling. I am not the type of rider that stands and hammers, as a heavier rider I like to stay seated and climb, might jump out of seat for the odd corner when accelerating out, but I would lock out for that.

Still thinking of the procaliber, like the idea of the second water bottle cage and the lighter weight. Full suspension does have it's benefits.

Thanks for the update.

I rode Mrs. Duffy’s ProCaliber yesterday and it’s a great bike.

To be honest, if they had one in my size for the price we got (these were demo bikes) I would have got the ProCaliber (based solely on the lower price).

What would be a great setup is a ProCaliber with upgraded rims (like what comes on the TopFuel 9.8 or something similar).

I mentioned earlier in their thread that Mrs. Duffy’s bike showed no signs whatsoever that it was ridden. Mine had some evidence of it being ridden. You could tell the tires had been on dirt and there was a tiny scratch (more like a rub mark) where the water bottle comes out (tight fit for that bottle).
