Berkley Students Demand Take Home Test

Apparently not studying for a test results in rallying the troops, staging a protest, and citing white privilege. Plus, they might as well disrupt the kids who did study and actually wanted to take the test, who are apparently privileged too. I hope the underprivileged fail.

I read about this early last week. They hit Harley Shaiken's class. I don't know why they'd want to do that to him, as he's probably more sympathetic to them than other academics would be.

Shaiken is a reliable "get" when it comes to news stories that need an expert in his particular field to opine on whatever the issue is that the journalist is writing about, by the way.

Dang straight. They need to learn that they can't throw a temper tantrum and get their way - though it appears it has worked so far.

The student responded: "I'm trying to take my test." Another protester snapped back: "We're trying to live our lives ... white boy with privilege."

Wow. I am not a violent person, but If some racist ass hat snapped something like that at me, I would probably be inclined to beat the absolutely shit out of them.

I’d have failed the protesters and guaranteed at least a passing grade to all the kids who were there prepared to take the test.

Interesting. I'm a college prof. If a student emailed me and said they were experiencing significant emotional turmoil and wanted to take the test a different day, I'd most likely let them. If a bunch of them pulled this stunt, I'd be quite unsympathetic, as they're affecting so many other students.

Calling it white supremacy is bullshit.

I have taught for the last 10 years, part time. I would remind them they get the grade they earn. End of story. My syllabus says if we have no prior agreement for an alternate time to take the exam, they get a zero.

The College failed these students.

They didn't give them a failing grade.

They failed to educate them.

You’re wrong.

This is exactly what the college taught them to do. Where do you think they got these ideas about privilege and “students of color”?

Where do you think they got the notion they are deserving of special treatment?

This is a perfect rendition of what this school set out to produce.

They just never thought their product would be turned inward.

Uh, no. We don't.

Young people have always been misguided, especially at Berzerkeley. But these folks are really fucked up.

The tragic part is that otherwise qualified kids were denied enrollment to make room for these degenerates. What a waste.

Somehow I doubt even in an ethics study class they were taught when something goes on in your life you don't want to deal with blame whitey so you can get out of it.

I'd love to hear a recording of the conversations that got them from "I'm not prepared for this test" to "it's because of racism, so we need to protest".

I was a TA for a class and one of the weaker students wanted out of a test. She was Pakistani and said she couldn't study because she was so worried about a coup that was taking place at the time (1999). The Profs response was "She's from Pakistan, they have a coup like every week."

I'm curious, what do you mean by that? I'm assuming it's the legit programs with gifted students and the liberal arts college(s) that attract these types but I'm not sure.

I ask myself this a lot. Living and hiring in the Bay Area for 20 years, I have about a 10-20% success rate will Cal Engineering grads. By success, I mean we haven't let them go within the 1st year. We mostly hire straight out of school. Stanford, UC Davis, and Cal Poly are all north of 90%. It's weird.

This seems to have been put in the playbook now. If you remember the Evergreen students, one of their demands was extra ti.e for coursework and tests because they were busy protesting.

This is yet another example of people attacking someone who is mostly an ally. You aren't going to get very far if you can't stop going after your friends.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

I can't imagine that this video was shot at the Engineering school of UC Berkeley. This type of behaviour is typically associated with arts courses typically named Womyns Studies, Herstory, Gender Studies, A Fair and Unbiased Discourse on Why White Men Are Evil, etc. Engineering schools - at least the one's I've been to - tend to be less snowflakey.

Also - if the success rates are so starkly different, why would you ever hire another Cal Eng. grad?

Remember - It's important to be comfortable in your own skin... because it turns out society frowns on wearing other people's

I didn't look for any stories, but I assume there were a handful of right wing demonstrators that these snowflakes thought they needed to protest instead of keeping up with their schoolwork.

Agreed that this isn't Engineering and less likely to happen.

I've worked with and hired some great Cal Engineers, so I wouldn't toss out the whole group. It's also the closest University, and with Bay Area housing, it's sometimes tough to find people that can afford to live here.

We've gotten much better at screening out during the interview, and that has brought the percentage way up.

Just the disconnect. The engineering school has been highly rated since I was in college. Met with the CS dept last summer since my son is considering applying and was pretty impressed. Yet seems like everything else associated with Berkeley is like a different world. I would have thought there would some influence either way.
