Best Treadmill to BUY
I am forgoing a gym membership and building up my paincave.
Woodways are the best treadmills that I have ever ran on. But....worth more than my car. So I am checking to see the best treadmills that you recommend so I can start comparing...?

1) Woodways
2) Boston Marathon Treadmill 4.0(Lionel uses this one I think)
3)

Any other high end...cheaper-ish ones?

Sole F80, NordicTrack Commercial 2450.

Go with the Sole, as the NT requires a subscription that is a whopping $400+ extra.

I would go with the Life Fitness Club Series. You can get a club series that is built for home use.

The Sole F80 is a solid, well used choice. It's not perfect though - quite a few users have managed to crack the deck (me included, they send you a new one for free, they're not hard to swap out on your own) after a few years, and in my case, my entire console shorted out after 4 years and had to be replaced at my cost ($350), although to be fair, my TM is in a garage that develops lots of condensation.

I will say that our gyms have the Life Fitness treadmills, and they're fine and beefier, but I don't notice any particular improvement in the run quality compared to the (much) cheaper Sole F80. The F80 also has a lifetime warrantee on the motor so you don't have to worry about burning it out.

I have a Precor home treadmill I quite like (energy series). If it has a weakness, its that you have to press the up and down keys to adjust speeds, and the speed doesn't adjust quickly, so it's not super practical for interval work. The nicer gym treadmills have the feature where you can program two speeds and switch between them.

Had I been able too find a reasonably priced used gym treadmill I'd have gone that route. That aside, I'd buy mine again.

Being honest with how I use mine, it's mostly just a way to run every day with out going out the rain; so mostly easy runs with the occasional tempo or long run, so the speed thing is not an issue.

I picked up a gently used Sole F80 on Craigslist. At the price I paid, I would have no problem replacing the deck a few times.

I have been running on a Sole F85 for around a year now. Solid unit with a nice, wide running surface. Picked it up off of craigslist for $500.

My only gripe is that the preset speeds have a gap right where I usually like to run, so instead of being able to hit one button for my intervals I have to hit speed up/down multiple times. Other than that I'm happy with my purchase.

I got the Nordic track a couple of years ago. It's great and no issues. There is the dumb ifit program on it, however there are no requirements to pay for it.

I do wish treadmills were "smarter" though.

I think Sole might be made by Dyaco. I know my Spirit fitness is. Solid machines for sure but not without issues here and there. Nothing to prevent operation. I got it for chump change anyway.

Me too. My True PS100 has been rock solid. It doesn't have all the fancy graphics or wifi but it gives me single touch speeds and inclines for intervals and a powerful motor and very good deck system that is reasonably quiet. Seems to be built like a tank.

I've had a PS100 for about 2 years now and it's awesome. No issues at all. Very solid.

I ran on a Nordictrack when I was shopping around and it felt cheap and flimsy. I could feel the deck flex. The True was solid and felt more like a commercial treadmill. I thought the Landice was a little nicer than the True, but the difference wasn't big enough for me to justify the cost so I thought the True was a really good compromise.

I've been really happy with it.

Can't really speak to "best" since I've only ever bought one---a Pro-form. We bought it around 2000 or so, it was the most expensive one they had at the mall sporting good store back then at around $900 or so. Still have it.

I've recently replaced the original belt, and had to replace a power transistor on the control board (probably because the belt was worn). Its been in near constant use for the entire 17 years we've owned it.

we have a Sole F80 got it on black friday a few years ago and has been great. Managed to wear out the rear roller but it was my fault for over tightening it I thought the running belt was slipping but it was the motor belt. No deck issues yet for us and we use it almost daily and twice a day in winter.

+1 I have had my Sole F80 for 4+ years and it has been absolutely great. I train a lot on it over the Winter and it has been great considering what I paid for it.

Whatever you go with, just make sure you get an extended warranty with it. Our 4-year period is nearly up, but in that time we've had a primary circuit board go, and two decks; ext cover was ÂŁ89.99 at the time, so well worth it.

29 years and counting

I've been price stalking this treadmill for a few months, and the cheapest I've seen is $1349 (not including tax/shipping) on Sole's website as part of a Labor Day sale. I'm going to wait for Black Friday to buy.

I have a True PS800, it's 4 or 5 years old. Never had a problem with it, it is fantastic in every way. Better feel than many gym treadmills.

My method when purchasing it was to decide on my budget, and then buy the absolute best treadmill I could get with that money that came with zero bells and whistles. All I cared about was how it felt running, what its build quality was, how fast it could go carrying someone of my weight (155) and that I could get there easily. I did not care about pre-programmed workouts. I did not care if it had a TV. I did not care if it had a fan. ETC.

Why would I spend more for all that when I can use an ipad with PS Vue or netflix or whatever for TV? If my ipad breaks the treadmill still works. Why would I pay for a crappy fan when I can spend 30 bucks and have a great one and if it breaks the treadmill still works. That's how I thought at least. That's why I wouldn't choose all those Landice models or others like that.

Just give me a usable treadmill and I supply the rest. And for my money, the PS800 has been great. I'm sure there's equally great treadmills out there too.

Can't speak to the NordicTrack, but I recently picked up a Sole F80. So far its great, though thats probably ~100mi only. I like the longer/wider deck, speed buttons on the sides are nice, overall it just works well. I wish it were dumber and just had a couple buttons I care for (I dont need bluetooth and crappy speakers/fan), but can't really do anything about that.

I skimmed through the replies and saw quite a bit of Sole. I have an F-85 and it's everything I wanted. Sturdy, simple, pretty quiet. Haven't had any problems with it in the 1.5 ish years I've owned it.

Only issues I have are: 1) inclines go up in 1% increments (would be nice to have 0.5%) and 2) you can't punch in the speed you want, you either use arrows or press one of the presets (I think it's sometime like 2, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 12) and then go from there.

But those are more nice to have than must haves, at least for me.

I am actually looking at a used PS800 right now. Looks new and shows under 1K miles, however the guy selling it knows nothing about it - he took it on a trade. He is asking $1,200 which seems like a pretty good price, however I am hesitant not knowing the history.

Glad to hear you have had a good experience with yours though. I might just try to wait him out a bit and see if he is willing to move on the price at all. The other alternative is a PS300 for $800, but it's about 8 years old at this point with little use.

I'd jump on a PS800 at that price, especially with so little miles! I've had my PS100 for just under 3 years - got it in November of 2014 -and we have around 3,000 miles on it so far (between my wife and I), and it's been rock solid.

Yes, I did. Only have about 100 Miles on it so far. My wife probably has 30. We both are happy. I didn’t get that option, sales guy told me it wasn’t worth it, in the end, do t think it is needed after running on it.

The critique is the following.

- the fan is a fart in a windstorm, useless, plus I’m short, 5’8” and hits me in the face. My wife it is over her head. No biggie, not needed.

- when the incline is up the console does move a bit, but the precor I ran on did also, maybe common. More annoying than anything.

- the attachment for the tablet, nice, quality, but wish I could get the tablet higher up. It rests on the bottom and the top is adjustable to lock it in. again, I’m used to it now.

I love how quiet it is and changes speed quickly for intervals. It feels solid, not like a cheap POS.

Overall, I’d buy again. It was between this and Precor, the precor I could have gotten much cheaper but like the warranty on Landice and assembled here in the US.

I kicked around a Woodway, but shipping is a pain, couldn’t find one to run on, and damn they are costly.

Hope that helps, if you have any questions let them fly.

Thanks so much for your reply, very helpful! Sorry for the long post/questions...but just spent a bunch of money and value your opinion. I will PM you my number....I know this post is going to feel like an interrogation....but very interested to hear a recent purchaser's opinion.

Concerned about the console moving when on incline...actually a lot concerned. I never run less than a 1.0 incline, and usually more. How noticeable is the movement? I spent the extra money on a high end device to get this machine because it seemed sturdy. Do you have it on a mat? I had a $1200 treadmill prior to this one and don't recall it moving on inclines.

When you ordered yours, how long did it take to receive. I added some options and they are telling me 3.5-4 weeks. I am not terribly concerned with this....I can always run outside since the weather cooled down....or go to the gym. Just curious.

I added the tablet attachment, but was concerned it was a cheap aftermarket thing. The dealer assured me it was solid and didn't just clip on the treadmill. I bought it. True? What do you mean by "It rests on the bottom and the top is adjustable to lock it in" . Is it an integrated part of the machine? Could you remove it and the machine look normal? Can you not adjust the arm that the tablet mounts on to get to the height desired?

I know this is a novelty....and likely something I won't use, but have you tried the integration with RunSocial, or other programs? Very few treadmills have this built in, but the Landice L7/L8 does. Thought it may be interesting to incorporate on long runs.....load a course, watch it on the iPad, and the treadmill automatically adjusts incline.

Would love to hear additional feedback as you put the miles on your Landice. I do 90% of my running indoors and excited to put it to the test. I hope I made a good decision.....I know I am tired of reading about treadmills!!!

I spent the extra money on a high end device to get this machine because it seemed sturdy. It is sturdy IMO. Heavy as hell. Do you have it on a mat? Yes, do, they recommended it. I had a $1200 treadmill prior to this one and don't recall it moving on inclines.

When you ordered yours, how long did it take to receive. 2 weeks, they had the unit in stock and only order the Cardio console.

True? Yes, it is a nice quality component. What do you mean by "It rests on the bottom and the top is adjustable to lock it in" Your tablet rests in a channel and there is a clamp to hold it that raises and lowers. Since it is like this your tablet will always be at the same level, cannot make higher or lower. You can either place it landscape or portrait. . Is it an integrated part of the machine? Yes, it mounts on the back side of the unit with 4 screws. Could you remove it and the machine look normal? Yes, LOL, it doesn't come on the unit so it looks fine without it. Can you not adjust the arm that the tablet mounts on to get to the height desired? No, the arm adjusts the tilt, not the height. As mentioned above the height is not adjustable.

I know this is a novelty....and likely something I won't use, but have you tried the integration with RunSocial, or other programs? Yes, I use RunSocial as do some others on this site. Very few treadmills have this built in, but the Landice L7/L8 does. Thought it may be interesting to incorporate on long runs.....load a course, watch it on the iPad, and the treadmill automatically adjusts incline. Yes, and if you are in heart rate mode will adjust your speed also.

Would love to hear additional feedback as you put the miles on your Landice. I do 90% of my running indoors and excited to put it to the test. I hope I made a good decision.....I know I am tired of reading about treadmills!!! In the end it is a treadmill, not worth stressing over.

OK, one question for you, why in the hell didn't you run on it prior to purchase??

I did! They didn't have the tablet bracket in stock, so I never saw it in person. I jacked up the incline and didn't notice it moving.....so will be interested see what it's like when I get it. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

Been looking at them also, thinking Landice L8 with cardio console.

Thoughts?

I am about to buy this model, with the ortho belt/suspension. Did you buy one?

Noticeable.

True? Yes, it is a nice quality component. Just my 2 cents - I seriously recommend a dedicated 32" TV for the treadmill and bluetooth headphones. I have a ROku Tv ($150ish) and BT headphones - I mount the TV on a metal TV stand I bought on Amazon for $100, but you could def either mount it on the wall or just get a different kind of TV stand. It's really awesome, particularly for easy and recovery miles where you can enjoy the show a little more. Love my setup - I watch literally all my TV on my TM or Vasa.

Woodway is the best without question.
Have you looked at their certified pre-owned program?

I have also had luck with the NordicTrack 2950.

This thread has helped me alot, thanks!

Found a F80 for a good deal used.

My question is this. Can two guys move one and will it fit in a minivan without disassembly? I want to put it in my basement which means stairs with a 90 deg. turn at the bottom....

Thanks

The deck folds up, so the 90-degree turn shouldn't pose any issue (depending how high the ceiling is... might have to do some creative tipping/angling). We got our F63 down the stairs and into the room -- in the box, mind you -- with 2 women and a guy. I'd say it's probably easier when it's assembled and folded. Re. the minivan, I'm not sure... don't have much experience with them as far as how creative you can get folding/removing seats to make room.

Two guys can definitely move it, but I still recommend disassembling it before trying, especially going down stairs and a sharp corner. It's not very difficult or time intensive

I have the woodway and it sucks the least of all of them. Kinda pricy but it's built like a tank

I moved mine with 2 guys down a set of stairs. It was possible but I wish there were another guy to help. I put mine in the bed of the truck and needed the tailgate down. The deck is roughly 6 1/2 feet long, so may or may not fit in the van. You'll have to remove the console from the deck but that only takes 6 screws and an allen key.

I purchased a lifespan 5500i, tried a horizon T9 and didn’t care for it, had a Sole F80 prior. So far happy with the lifespan.

Sometimes I dream that I'm in the market for one. Woodway all the way. God those things are amazing; every single one I've been on. On the other hand, I really don't like Life Fitness treadmills. Of the ~6 clubs I've belonged to in as many years, almost all were outfitted with Life Fitness. There always seems to be a lot of side-to-side movement with them. Makes me feel really unsteady, especially at anything faster than 5k race pace. Woodways have always seemed rock solid. Beyond that, the Life Fitness treadmills seem to frequently be down for maintenance. Either the waxer needs to be filled or some other "please notify maintenance" warning. I've never seen that with the club that outfitted with Woodways.

Thanks all for the advice. I ended up buying the F80 over the weekend. It fit fine in the back of the inlaws Pacifica. Like mentioned it was easy to remove the console. We got it down the basement with just two guys. Won't say it was easy just because of the weight but had no issues.

Works great, love the unit so far. Picking up a footpod today and see how that works with it.
