He's been lurking but not posting. Vitus is silent. Rodred disappeared. Others seem to have disappeared or muted a bit.

It's like a weird pre-storm sensation here lately -- quiet with no birds chirping, barely a refreshing breeze. We're about to get pummeled.

Duffy has apparently been changing his username and going through deleting all his posts from the forum. Not sure why, but it has been suggested he had some sort of issue outside the forum or with another poster that has basically made him quit and get rid of anything he wrote.

Pure speculation on my part. But if I had to make a guess, it probably has something to do with his last exchange with Dave Lusan. It did get pretty fugly!

I have no idea what the situation is. I just hope all is well with Duffy. For all I disagreed with him on and for all he seemed over the top about and at times out of line, internet characters are weird & I'm sure he's a good dude in real life. It's not quite the same around here without his certain Duffy spice.

This ^

I was finally finished grieving the loss of The Forge. I then head to 'Merica for a couple of weeks of vacation. Arrive home, and note the LR room has a major piece of furniture missing. To be honest, I often came here just to read Duffy's latest observations about things in the world and found that 99% of them were spot on. I don't have 1st Amendment rights, (I'll get them back in 82 working days) so I could often count on Duffy to post replies to people on here that were nearly identical to what I was thinking. I just had to wait a bit for him to get his button pushed sometimes.

Like the rest, I wish him well. IMHO, Duffy really was the centerpiece of the LR. I agree with Midwest...this place is not the same without Duffy.

Duffy, I hope you are okay bro!

I do find it odd that the first thread about this subject was deleted by Dan. It was the thread where it was discussed what legitimate reasons there would be for Dan to delete a persons user history. That does give me pause and hope all is well.

Dan doesn't delete threads and users like that, and there have been many posters who crossed way more lines than Duffy. Duffy was just a dabbler compared to some of the idiots we've had here over the years.

Nah, I'm not seeing it. After however many years here (going back pre-Duffy), I'd say the likelihood of Duffy trying to pull a more elaborate 'Hey look ~ I went away, do you miss me yet?' gambit is easily greater than Dan going that far out of his way to conduct some sort of vendetta-purge. Duffy's clearly been an attention whore as far back as he's been here, while Dan has been awfully laissez-faire about a lot of past user transgressions (as Slowguy noted).

That's probably quite true. But to leap from there to "I'd also bet that it is Dan deleting Duffy's posts, not the Duffy." is ridiculous.

If it were indeed Dan it would have happened wholesale without all the user name changes. No?

I don't remember that thread or what was in it, but there are all sorts of reasons Dan might delete a thread.

I don't have any idea why Duffy called it quits, but I don't think Dan forced him out, nor do I think Dan is deleting his threads one by one.

Dan deleting that thread was strange. I don't think he's deleting Duffy's individual posts. I said it in the deleted thread, Luscan and Duffy had an awful exchange. Both crossed the line IMO. I think it has to do with that. Or Duffy's just f ing with everyone.

Sorry, I won't be much help there. Usually when a thread is deleted, we find out well after the fact. I don't remember anything in that thread that seemed worthy of deletion, but somebody might've posted something inflammatory after the last time I looked. Or there might've been something earlier in the thread that seemed innocuous to most of us, but triggered Dan, or triggered someone else who asked Dan to take it down. Hard to say, in general we have to trust Dan to do the right thing which IMO he has always done.

He posted too much info how to track him down and get to him personally.

There are so many Wackos on ST that have credibly threatened him and others with physical violence.

I was always surprised how 'transparent' he was about his real life profile and that of his family, given how he wasn't shy to call these Wackos out.

A bit of an exaggeration there, no? "So many?" Can you link to 3 instances? I can't even think of two. I didn't see the Luscan thread, but from the sounds of it that was at least one.

When you have an ego as big as Duffy, you find yourself in some difficult situations. His entire exististence has been trying to get as many people to pay attention to him as possible. It was ridiculous before the election and jumped the shark after.

Exactly the answers I expected from you (and Sally) as Duffy regularly owned you (both) in the LR. There were times I'd log in just to be amused by watching you going down in flames in an argument with Duffy. Hey, I gotta hand it to you for trying though. I never did!

Duffy was the most aggressive in defending his positions, that doesn't necessarily mean he was right.

I haven't been on here for long and his aggressive defending got played out real quick with me.

True

In fact he recently took such a tact in defense of pot. He boasted about his use of it, which apparently makes him an expert.

Funny thing is not to long afterwards he begins deleting posts.

Well, uh, sure, I guess that's one way to look at it. Another way might be this.

Duffy couldn't decide who he wanted to be here in the LR. He made his name posting meme photos and saying outrageous crap, but then he got really upset when he wasn't taken seriously. Unfortunately, he made no effort to change his tone between when he was serious and when he was trolling, and then when he was losing an argument, he'd claim to have just been playing a part the whole time. He did what most internet tough guys do. He just got aggressive until it was clear he had no more to say, and then he'd claim victory. I don't think he ever actually won an argument, so much as just stomped off like a child. That's fine, there's room for all types here in the LR, and sometimes Duffy was just fun. But Duffy's type has been filled by several people before he ever showed up here, and I'm sure it will be filled by someone new in the not too distant future.

Slowguy

(insert pithy phrase here...)

A-Ha! So just maybe Duffy is getting nominated by his bro/crush Donny boy for a lower-level sub-cabinet position, and just needs to scrub his e-trail a little bit and lay low for awhile to clear the GOP-rigged congressional committee's token vetting ~ eh?

Perhaps he'll be the EPA's new Deputy Assistant Undersecretary for Gas Station Cleanup Standardization and Enforcement? And we can say we knew him back when, before he became The Man. It'll be YUGE....

To be fair, he didn't always argue positions he did or didn't agree with. Or maybe he did. I could never tell.

Don't forget that he had carte blanche to bang his wife whenever he wanted to. Maybe he lost that master pass and coming back to the LR with his head in shame is just too much to handle.

He also extolled the virtues of MMA for quite a while. Then said he stopped taking it because of some unnamed bad effect.

Kind of like people in college who swear lsd shrooms, etc. open your mind. Then six months later they have dropped out.

I'm beginning to think that we are much more fucked than I thought.

You may be on to something. Didn't he adopt his son from Russia? So, he's got the Russian connections that are required in order to "serve" in this administration.

Speaking of the Lost SUPer, there were recently two shark attacks in Santa Barbara. One on a kayaker and the second on a man on a paddle board, a/k/a, SUP (stand up paddle). The man asked that his name not be published as he wanted "privacy." Could it have been our Lost SUPer?

Note, the Lost SUPer was disdainful of paddle boards when used in surf, but admitted to using them in the harbor. Personally, I don't think this guy was our Lost SUPer as he was reportedly "shaken up."

Like JSA said earlier in the thread (he may have actual knowledge, as opposed to my speculation), I am pretty sure Duffy is fine and just trying to lower his profile.

He said a lot of things about a lot of people and issues in here. He is beefing with the his town of residence over airbnb and other stuff. He broadcast and rehashed confrontations he has had while on the road, including more or less admitting to battery on a driver who (he said) tried to run him off the road on his bike. In the early days (which correspond to when he started BJJ, I think), he said he'd happily break the thumbs of someone if they broke rules on a plane regarding use of overhead compartments and got in his face about it. He said a lot of stuff about Islam and Muslims that doesn't look very good in the abstract.

He's also not hard to identify. He put enough up on this forum over the years that you could figure out name and home address, place of work and name of spouse with about 10 minutes of Google work.

I imagine some combination of personal shit and record of what he's said on here and/or ability to locate him via info he divulged on here made him want to reel in his electronic detritus a bit.

Wrong. He attacked the shark and put in a rear naked choke because it tried to drop in on his wave, and now the shark is suing.

TheForge is an insecure accountant who tried to project a tough guy image. I think Duffy actually has some capability to be a tough guy.

You say 'lost SUPer', the shark says 'lost supper'.

Is loosing Duffy like releasing the kraken?

Seriously, the LR was here long before Duffy, and it will do just fine if he's gone.

Yet four pages and counting on speculation. He clearly had some impact.
