I laughed at that too.

Also, will someone please tell me why the hell there are so many fish packers... in Nebraska.

Also: locker and coat room attendants?

Long Chile was a silly place.

I would have bet on assisted-living, nursing home workers of some sort.

I would have bet on Medicare insurance fraudsters or personal injury lawyers

Based on that theory I would have expected it to be GTL jobs - personal trainers, tanning techs, laundromat operators.

For hair based jobs, I would have though gel applicators rather than shampooers...

I'm pretty sure NJ has more hair salons per capita than any other state.

It's a weird place. Did a couple of pretty awesomely sketchy bachelor party weekends there though.

When you buy fish in the heartland it all goes through Nebraska.

Is it carpet shampooers due to Sandy clean-up?
Otherwise, I'll go with JSA analysis.

ETA: If it wasn't so cold in Minnesota I could realize my life long dream of book binding.

What I'm surprised about is that "shampooer" is a specific job title. If it is, then no surprise that the Dirty Jers is replete with them. I would just expect the category to be broader, like hairstylist or something. Are there really people whose sole job is to shampoo customer hair, to the exclusion of cutting it, blowdrying it, styling it, and so on?

Interesting. That is now the only thing I know about Nebraska.

I assume they lump all butchers and fish processors together, so they have a shit load of butchers and some fish processing facilities.

I don't think many of these are surprising if you know anything about each of the state's economies. Except my home state with our book binders, WTF?

Guessing lots or printers there because of the historical lumber/pulping industry

WTF is a "tire builder"?

"Roof bolter" struck me as strange, too. But on reflection I think it refers to coal mine construction. Thanks, Trump!

those two states are the primary source for mining tires (world wide). So, there you go, mining is a major part of this country's economy.

I thought that it was interesting that the most popular job in 29 states was truck driving. I wonder what will happen when (if?) there are driverless trucks?

Wow. Truck driver? I had no idea.

Good point.

Mining tires, eh? I had no idea.

No problem with mining - my state has "Mining service operators" (along with Wyoming).

Quote:

  • The prominence of truck drivers is partly due to the way the government categorizes jobs. It lumps together all truck drivers and delivery people, creating a very large category. Other jobs are split more finely; for example, primary school teachers and secondary school teachers are in separate categories.

Makes sense that they are using BLS categories, which breaks down everything very small, except everyone from a fedex driver to a long haul trucker are "truck drivers". Maybe even auto parts delivery drivers.

That is a good point, since in every other state they are as common as telephone operators.

Took the family to Six Flags last week and had to have the pump snatched out of my hand. Guy was pretty nice about it and once I remembered of course I was cool. Said that since his station is right off the turnpike and next to Six Flags he gets into it a couple times a day with some out of state driver who doesn't understand and will just about fight him for the pump.

By then, the coal mining industry will be back on its feet, so most of them can segue into that.

Pretty fascinating and funny stuff!

What's up in PA? Are Pennsylvanians especially accident prone?

I had no idea what a roustabout was. I learned something new.

Tire builder - Michelin's North American HQ is in South Carolina. 7 plants in SC. 2 plants in AL. (One of those is huge.)

Last year after giving flushots every fall to hundreds of people I started thinking, gee hardly any patients of mine ever die from the flu. And I have a nursing home and a lot of old patients. I keep seeing this statement that flu was one of the ten leading causes of death. So I looked it up. Something like number 9 was, "pneumonia and influenza."
