IM Cairns
I'll be competing on June 11, and just learned I unexpectedly have 1 week after that before I need to be back (previously was just going to bounce). Any suggestions from those in the area or have been on what to do with that amount of time? Stay in the area or somewhere in AUS? Worth the time to go to New Zealand? Is there any Fijian island that is "easy" to get to? Looking for a relaxing/snorkeling/natural beauty type of vacation, starting to look into it but would appreciate any info. Thanks all!

Cairns has stacks of the Natural beauty kind of stuff. Definitely worth a day trip out to the reef. Port Douglas is nice for the view and the tropical rainforest. Places like Kuranda are worth a visit too. The hills provide amazing views.
If you aren't too nailed from the race, there are also the world champs mountain bike courses withing half an hour of Cairns. Definitely worth hiring a bike for the day and exploring

Lucky you!

Sign up for the Green Island swim Thursday. It's spectacular and you'll want to spend the day on the island (and possibly want to go back again).

Renting a car and driving up the coast is beautiful, especially to the Daintree.

If you're a history or civil engineering buff, the Kuranda railway is very cool and one-of-a-kind.
