Now to my problem how do i race with these things? Who has cut out tongue and put in different laces? Were did you cut the tongue out, how far down? What kinda of laces did you use?

thanks:-)

I can't recall where, but I have seen somewhere a picture of a pair of Giro Empire ACC retro-fitted with Boa Closures. That might work.

But I am guessing that it's the Boa closures and other ratchet mechanisms that make some of these shoes more aerodynamically dirty.

Boa will not work. You have to cut the tonque out of the shoes, that is a requirement for easy entry I have found. The Boa will cut your feet up.

These are amazing. I have actually taken the heel tab off and the metal insert that the heel tab attaches to. The shoe is down to like 155grams and crazy comfy. With a broken foot, I can say the shoe is almost too stiff!!! I know of at least 4 other pros that have copied this setup, and at least a few other amateurs as well. I expect this setup to keep gaining steam. Another very notable pro is experimenting with the Sub6 and possibly some elastic laces as well. This was a little catch-22 for me. Part of me, wishes I kept this a secret, but that isn't like me, I like to share my passion.

Frankly, you have a shoe that is lighter, more aerodynamic, more comfy, and easier to get into and out of for T1/T2. I haven't experienced any downsides but it is going to take time and energy getting the elastic laces to the right tension for you.

Sure boa like that will work, but I would suspect that there go your aerodynamics. The main reason I went with this shoe was that it was so much faster than my last shoe with straps. I guess we won't know without testing. But even like that the shoes won't be as easy to get into as the elastic. I had boa like that for many years on a variety of Specialized S-works, the tongue is going to want to sit flat. You may be able to slide your feet in but there are times where it is going to hurt you. The beauty of the elastic is you can just jam your foot in. The elastic will eventually find its way into the right place on your foot.

Great thanks for the advice, I have been wearing the giro for 4 weeks now making sure I liked it before I take the next step of cutting the tongue out, for me its kinda of scary to start cutting up a 300$+ shoe!

It hurt me to do it as, but with the elastic the tongue will just bunch up and you will immediately see you need to remove it in order for the elastic to work.

Ok so i did switch to fast laces, cut out the tongue, love the feel and fit. Question: how did you hide more of the laces? Mine don't look that "aero." Thanks!

I would assume you need to cut off all the extra laces then tuck them in the shoe or under the laces.

I bought the laces on Thomas's blog and they will lie flat on the shoe. After I laced them up and rode a couple times with them I cut the laces and only have a little knot on the outside of the 2nd lace hole. They were too snug to get on/off easily laced up to the top hole and work just fine laced up to the 2nd hole. On/off easily now.

That might be fine as a training pair, but for races, yes I would ditch the extra lace. Not sure if you can see the picture at the bottom of this post. But you can see the ends are cut off and tied in a knot. The ends are also burnt with match. Over time as the laces stretch with use I end up making another knot and cutting off the first one. I do recommend the laces specifically in the post as well. They are an odd size, narrower, and go thru the eyelets and lay flat. Traditional flat elastic shoe laces are too wide and will end up bunching and will not lay flat.

Thanks for sharing that Thomas, I had seen your post on the matter before but it has piqued my interest once again. Do you find that you miss the heeltab to hold your shoe when putting your foot in? I always thought this was one of the "essential" parts of a tri shoe, but then again most people run in "normal" running shoes with some kind of fast laces and those generally don't have heeltabs either (the tri specific running shoes do, of course)

The reason the S Works sub 6 is so fast is because the laces are covered by a sleeve. no matter what you do I don't believe you're gaining anything

I do not miss the heel tab. The heel tab is just another thing to mess with aerodynamics as far as I am concerned.

Better but you prob still have too much lace to make them tight enough. Again, having done a lot of experimentation you are much better off using the flat lace than the round elastics. The flat laces also meet my aero eye, along with being able to make the shoe more comfortable and tighter. Here is the dretiz elatsic, super cheap and thin.

The rip laces won't work for a couple of reasons IMO. One the tubing is round, I much prefer flat tubing, it meets the aero eye a bit better and is more comfortable on the skin - remember, you have to cut the tongue out of the shoe so the lace rests on your bare foot. They seem less aero as the plastic piece seems to stick up a bit. However, mostly important it is not that easy to get the feet in the shoe. I think this was a product of the fact that each Riplace is actually two round tube wires on both sides of the riplace. It just ends up being too much friction to slid your foot in easily.

is it necessary to cut out the tongue? does it bunch up, or just make it harder to get your foot into the shoe? once you cut the tongue out, was the shoe as comfortable?

Yes it is necessary to cut the tongue as it will just bunch up. I was going to experiment with another pair in cutting the tongue but only like 7/8 of it. Is it as comfy, I don't know, can't really say, but I can say this. I would never go back to another pair of triathlon shoes or run the SLX in a triathlon with the tongue.

No those won't work. I realize it is hard to cut the tongue out of $300 shoe but they just don't work without the tonque in my experience. By all means try them out and get back to me. Practice entering them very quickly with flying mount and see what happens. The tongue will bunch and you won't be able to get it back out.

Kept the tongue - and did the lacing under the tongue.

At the top of the tongue - I made to holes - and have the lace holding the tongue down on the shoe/foot.

Make sense?

My idea is to install flat elastic laces and leave the tongue in place. On race day take duct tape, one long piece that folds over and under the tongue. on the top this will cover the laces for more aero. Include redundancy where you fold the tape back on itself to lengthen the tongue so you can grab it to aid in entry. Trim the redundant portion so it's not so wide.

Anyhow an idea, but haven't tried it yet. And to keep the elastic central upper laces free to stretch can place a narrow strip of opposing tape along the under surface of the main tape to partially cover the sticky surface, so it doesn't restrict the stretch in the laces at entry.

I really like that idea. Now, if you were to tape the edge of the tongue to the shoe and create a nice smooth surface, it would be perfect. Because the tape would be adhering to the smooth leather surfaces, I would imagine it wouldn't be too hard to source some kind of waterproof solution? I would even consider using electrical tape to do most of the work.

Just got my pair yesterday. Rode on my trainer last night with just the regular laces. I really like these shoes. Extremely light weight and stiff. My PI's feel like bricks compared to these. I was very surprised how mid foot the cleat placement was. I thought I rode mid foot on my old PI's but when I went to put on new cleats on the SLX's the furthest forward cleat placement was still more midfoot than what I had set up on my PI's.

As far as lacing, I know a bunch of people have said you have to cut the tongue. But has anyone tried lacing elastic laces under the elastic strap on the tongue (just 1 loop) to keep the tongue from sliding down? From pictures it looks like most people were not lacing their laces under the tongue strap. I think this would help keep the tongue from sliding down and therefore you wouldn't have to cut it.

I have the Empire ACC which is pretty similar. They are not so easy to get into even with the tongue removed. At least compared to my Shimano tri shoes... I can get into those in 10 seconds after mounting. Maybe I just need to practice more :)

I'm not worried about the tongue... It's held by 5 stitches. I'm pretty sure I can get some shoe repair guy to re-attach it for $10.

As far as laces go, I recommend these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DFK6EXS/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
They stay flat and you can trim them to just right thanks to the end clips.

Here's how I set them up: https://www.instagram.com/p/BPJcRlWD51f

I read all the threads about modifying these shoes and I just couldn't bring myself to cut up such an expensive pair of bike shoes. The solution I came up with to use rip laces that I laced through the vent holes on the outside edge of the tongue. I have found that this has worked perfect for me. Easy to get in and out and I didn't have to mangle my shoes. I had some worries that the elastic lace on the underside of the tongue would be irritating on the top of my foot, but that has not been the case.

I really like what you did Danny. I wonder if you could get away with only using every other hole instead of all 7. I had riplaces on my running shoes for a few races last year. I felt they stretched out even after minimal use. And I thought they were pretty fragile as I had a couple snap on me but that was only when I installing them or taking them out before/after races.

Going to try to experiment with a couple things and see what works.

You can do a flying mount with this lace setup in a race or you are just planning on using them for training?

In fairness I have never tried to do a flying mount as I predominantly focus on long course and Ironman rarely lets the amateurs keep shoes in the pedals out of transition. It would definitely be tougher to get them on in a flying context, but I raced Ironman Florida with this exact setup.

They have definitely stretched out some over time which is actually a good thing in this application. I think you could get away with an every other pattern easily.

I should probably go back and clarify the reason for cutting out the tongue is based on the flying mount. If you aren't doing a flying mount I can see how this setup would work. Thanks for the feedback.

I am thinking about getting a pair and seeing how they fit. I was thinking of not cutting the tongue out but putting a loop/tab at the top of the tongue to help in getting into the shoe. Then tucking loop/tab under tongue to keep it from flopping in the air. I figured this would help with getting the shoe on since it gives a tab to hold on to and it keeps from having to cut the tongue. Any idea if that might work? Haven't had the shoes in my hands for more than a minute but just thought of this while tossing and turning in bed.

Here is your solution: https://www.specialized.com/us/en/117539

They work great right out of the box and are more aero than anything not specifically created for the track.

That IS a great shoe. I've been a big fan of the Specialized S-Works shoes with the Boa closures and had a couple of the earlier models.

My sense is that the Boa closures are the problem when it comes to aerodynamics - they stick right out in the wind.

This seems to be confirmed by what I am seeing online.

I realize that some people don't like the idea of cutting out the tongue. For me, someone who is full gas in the swim and hangs onto the fastest group he can, albeit it at the back of whatever pack I finally make, then I have sprint thru T1 to make sure I don't get dropped by the group on the bike, there is really no time for error. From my experience, the tongue has to be cut, but other people might have different requirements. People can also try the Louis Garneau 84 and play around with the shoe at a much much lower price point. And then once they figure out how they want to rock them adapt from there and possibly upgrade to the SLX.

I run mine through every other lace like so:

The ends are tied in a granny knot and than taped over to keep the area to a minimum.

I left a small amount of the tongue in place when I cut it out.

$2 worth of black elastic laces.

Now my problem is finding a place to mount rubber bands on the shoes. I read that people drill a hole into the back of the shoe, but I don't want to be riding around with a chunk in rubber band in my shoe once the band snaps. I'm currently looking for a different solution.

I got size 42.5 which is the same size as my Bontrager RXL Hilo tri shoes. These definitely fit tighter but I'm hoping I can manage it. Been doing everything I can think of to stretch them out a tad bit.

the lacing pattern looks like one i'll have to try, to prevent the laces from bunching when you put your foot in, which happened at my last race.

For me the thought wasn't so much saving the tongue as it was having something to grab on to make for easier slip on. I have always had the heel tab on my shoes, currently on PI Tri Fly, but I might just mess around with it and see what's easiest. Either way I like the idea of getting some "free" watts over the hunk of shoe I have now. Even though I really like the PIs and just got them last year!

Anybody thinking of the Empire SLX or SUB6 the fit is completely different at least in a 47. Huge toe box in Sub6, tight in SLX. SLX runs small, Sub6 runs big. Heel tough to get on quickly with Sub6 as it is molded and unforgiving like a car seat with big bolsters. Both have excellent power transfer. Both also come with ridiculously long laces and low stack height.

If I recall correctly, I think they were called â€Hot Dogs’ or similar and they were from very early 90’s ?

Look at the lace cover though, nice and thin and very flexible (but not stretchy). It can’t be hard to design a shoe with no laces and no tongue, cover the top in Velcro and then have a flap similar to that on the hot dogs that’s Velcro lined underneath.

Add a small tab to keep the flap open in transition and you would have a shoe that’s easy to enter, quick to close, easy to adjust on the fly and potentially very aero …

Hey guys! I am thinking about that for quiet a while now and probably want to do the same, but without cutting out the whole tongue. Has anyone tried to cut out pieces or just do some cuts into the tongue. Then threading the elastic laces through the cuts, symmetrical or three times per "thread" so the tongue is being hold into place by the laces all the time?

I hope you understand what I mean

I would love to see what you come up with. I have a second pair of SLXs, that I am planning on playing with. I was partially thinking of only removing 3/4 of the tongue and possibly sewing the bottom 1/4 into a fixed position.

Hi TG,

No, not really - I was kind of wondering why someone (i.e. Giro lol) didn't make a tri specific / aero shoe, all the features are out there (either past or present).

I wonder if they actually keep an eye on what people do with their kit and bear it in mind with future designs ?

I haven't tried the SUB6 but I also found the SLX to run smaller than expected, at least in a size 46. I ended up returning them and getting a really good deal on a pair of the LG Signature 84 that are a better fit for my foot.

That said, I really liked the construction of the SLX. The tongue of the LG 84 is very different than the tongue in the SLX. The tongue of the SLX is one piece of the same material, and it's very smooth and weighs almost nothing. The tongue of the LG 84 has a central strip that's smooth like the outside of the shoe but it's stitched into some other, more padded and bulkier fabric on the sides (I can post pics tonight if interested). The reason I bring it up is because I had been thinking of attaching the tongue to the top of the shoe to cover the laces, using some combination of stitching and velcro to make it easy to open and close. But after taking the tongue out there's no way I want to use it to cover the top – I'm pretty sure most of the aero gains would be lost because of the different fabrics and bulkier construction of the tongue. So instead I ordered some Sweet Spot lace covers and will see what I can do with those.

On a related note, anyone who cut out the tongue of their SLX and was going to throw it away I'd be happy to take it off your hands for you. Preferably something in a size 45+.

Ok so i did switch to fast laces, cut out the tongue, love the feel and fit. Question: how did you hide more of the laces? Mine don't look that "aero." Thanks!

I got Specialized Warp sleeves and got rid of the laces on my LG L.A. 84s (cheap alternative to the Giro's). I can get into the shoes in about 25 secs incl. getting rid of wrinkles on the sleeves. With the tongue removed (I haven't), you can prolly do better. Flying mount is out of the question though.

Some pics attached ... 2nd attempt

I fold over the warp sleeve to expose the top of the tongue, otherwise it's too tight to get in. With the sleeve folded over, it's easy to open the shoe to get in (pic 2, using only one hand to widen the shoe). Third pic is the end product after straightening out the wrinkles.

Yes, but I will probably put a small elastic lace in there to connect the latch on the tongue to 2 of the lace holes to keep the tongue in place when entering with wet feet. Will probably try this in a B or C race first before I would consider removing the tongue.

My cleat position is pretty vanilla ... I am not an expert on mid foot cleat positioning and whether the LG can facilitate it, but any further back I think I would have to take off the cleats and put the end of the sleeves under the cleats - which may not be a bad thing.

Hi Nick,

I believe it's a vinyl compound. It does stretch a little, but not quite as much as a latex swim cap. Stretching the upper half of the sleeve by maybe 2cm is the max I would think.

Hope this helps.

For sizing, I have a EU size 48 shoe and got size 49 sleeves. Maybe I could have gone for a size down, but it's a snug fit as it is.

So I just cut the tongue and laced them up with the xpands (used all the holes). Did a ride a round the neighborhood and they are difficult to get in and out. I probably struggled more to get out of them. So whats the secret? Should I not use all the eyelets?

are you using these rim clips of the xpands? You might want to try loosening them, you don't want the laces too tight for a variety of reason. Regardless, everyone should devote a good solid hour to practice getting into them and out of them.

I just put some elastic laces in mine with the tongue still in but they do seem a bit difficult to get on. I might take them to a shoe place and have loops put in on the heel so I have something to grab to make it easier.

I'm using the clips with the holes that come with the xpands. Not planning on using the the bigger clips that attach to the end of the lace. I have the clip on the outside of the top eyelet. I'm going to try loosening them. Luckily I haven't cut the laces yet. I thought about it some more before going to bed and its very similar to using elastic laces in running shoes. Every time I lace up my running shoes for races, if it's hard to get in and out of, I loosen it up. Even if it feels a little too loose with the running shoe on, I'm fine and never notice it in a race. I'm just a bit OCD about my feet sliding around in biking shoes. I always feel like I'm losing so much power when my feet slide around.

That's what I have in mine. I went straight across in the 2nd holes (from the toe). Then criss crossed from 4 to 6 to make an X at the top. Works well. I wish the overall top of the shoe was smoother though. the transition from shoe to foot isn't that great but that will be the case with any elastic laces.

I really like that zipper a couple posts up. I've thought about just sewing in a semi stretchy fabric with no zipper that would leave the top of the shoe super smooth, but haven't gotten around to it.

Some people ask me about a similar concept by RipLaces, unfortunately it didn't work out, I do like the idea of these better, the thing with the RipLaces was that they were round + there were two laces per side per eyelet instead of 1 which created a lot more friction and were much hard to get into IMO>

These "laces" are flat, with a rough side and smooth side. Once I get a chance, I'm going to see how they workout and will then report back. I'm hoping this solves the issue I had with the elastic laces. They kept rolling/twisting and were never flat on the shoe, therefore making them round near the top of the shoe.

Yep that is definitely one minor issue with the elastic. They tend to straighten it all out before a race, otherwise just deal with it. I think every solution is going to have some minor pluses and minuses.

That does look nice. I do really like AJ's zipper idea though if you can get the right fit with the zipper. I ordered some flat elastic laces and will take my shoes to a repair person to put on a loop on the heel and probably take the tongue off and see how easy they are with those adjustments. My issue with the lock laces now is they don't seem tight enough but truthfully I can't really tell if I am losing anything when riding, which I don't think I would be. I will test mine out and see how they are. They are really slick and comfy shoes though.

Well certainly easier to quickly tighten while on the move relative to using a lace only system. And it's devoid of the bulky Velcro straps which most shoes have. The Boa would allow for the mouth of the shoe to be opened wide and quickly ratchets down. Same with the lace system, you can have the two side buckles opened to allow for the laces to be released and then locked down once the shoe is on.

A strap and two boas. Personally I would sacrifice a few grams of drag to make sure my foot wasn't moving around in the show during the pedal stroke.

Could the specialized warp sleeve be used instead of laces ?

So I am thinking of removing the laces altogether and just using the
specialized warp sleeve to hold my foot in the Giro SLX shoe.

I'm a road bike guy and don't need to get into the shoe fast, but it seams like you could just fold it forward put your foot in and then fold it back.

Hi Brian,

I just got a pair of the Giro Sentrie techlace which is one model below the Factor techlace. They are probably better suited for Triathlon's because the boa dial is a really fast exit style boa(you pop the boa up and then the boa completely loosens and you can just slide your foot out). You can micro click it to tighten but NO micro click to loosen.

The giro Factor techlace is micro click to tighten and micro click to loosen. So it will take a bit more time and effort to get out of it. The Factor is a few grams lighter and different style boa is the main difference between the 2 models.

We are missing the AZ sunshine but hopefully will be back in late October! We have the Giro Factor in stock at our store right now and they are pretty sweet!

They are faster but like anything it takes a little bit of practice. Most have years and years of jumping into to strap shoes. You also have to get your lacing pattern and tension correct. I can get out of my shoes without even reaching down

Shoe credit to Thomas Gerlach (original idea and the suggestion to leave half the tongue). Took them to my local shoe repair shop. He charged $16 and they turned out great. Will mess with the tension of the elastic, but am pleased with how they turned out.

Just in time for Giro to come out with their version 2 that will be copyright infringement on Gerlach's idea!

I thought he would look at me like I was crazy...he was totally into it. I put the shoes on and he measured exactly the width I wanted the tongue sewn, so they weren't too loose/tight. He used some sort of remover to loosen the flap that holds the padding in the tongue, removed it and glued it back down. They look like they could have come from Giro like this. Now I am wondering what else I can get him to modify for me!!

The top photo he posted looks like they sewed a single 1/4" seam between eyelets 2-3 which seems adequate. The thing you don't want to happen while slipping on the shoes is to have the tongue roll down and fold under and that small seam should prevent that. I tried to hot glue gun my tongue in place but it didn't hold. Neither did SuperGlue. A rivet on each side probably would work. But I'll probably try the local shoe cobbler for a seam similar to Mike's. Or I'll remove the tongue altogether before my first race.

I definitely wanted to prevent the tongue rolling down or folding up, like Timtek said. . The tongue is sewn into the shoe all the way around to keep it stable. You can see the thread around the opening of the shoe next to the tongue....it isn't between the eyelets.

@t_gerlach -> after our little chat about the LA84, i ordered them and was pleasantly surprised that the tongue is stitched on with about 5 stitches that were short work with a xacto knife. That combined with lock laces, gives them such a clean look.

With all due respect, a small knot has about 1,000x less frontal area than a locklace with ends sticking up. Just my 2¢.

On a separate note, I cut out the 1" of tongue I had left and wish I hadn't there's an air gap between the shoe and the top of my foot now.

I put the knot of the elastic laces at the front instead of at the top, to have a cleaner look at the top:

As you see on the left shoe, I can put tape on it to make it more aero.

They weigh 130g per piece less than my old SIDIs, which is quite a lot!

My SIDIs and some Shimanos I have have size 44; my new Giro SLX have 44,5 which is fine.

You got a winner, congrats! I am going for exactly the same solution for my next pair, even the same color scheme.

Also, my idea is to keep an eye for a good price until fall, buy and use them out of the box for winter training and then hack them for the first spring tris. If they work as expected I'd go for a second pair to replace the first one in training.

It is indeed cumbersome to enter the shoes with the tongue, but since I do not do "flying mounts" I left it in for the time being. I try it out in training and decide than if I leave it in for races.
The idea with the 1/3 part of it stitched is pretty good.

Thanks Brendan! I think I have to throw a shout out to Mrs. Dooley, my 7th grade home ec teacher for that one. I learned to sew then, and it often comes in handy - I had to stitch up a wetsuit several years back and used dental floss that worked surprisingly well!

This pic shows a bit better where I did the sewing at the top of where I cut off the tongue. Took about an hour to do, as it was a little tricky getting the hands inside the shoes and getting the needle through the leather.

Hopefully the tension on the laces will be ok - I can always adjust a bit with new tape.

I had my first race last weekend. I used those same elastic laces. When I tried getting my feet in the shoes, I stretched too hard and one of them popped out! I rode the entire Int'l with the lace flapping in the wind. :(

I think I'll use those laces for the lower part of the shoe, and have a longer one on the top. One that won't pop out!

Dang that sucks! I think I'd have just ripped it out completely.

I've never had that happen, mine aren't that tight though, mainly just holding the two sides of the shoe against my foot. I don't pull up on the pedals in tri so not worried about how tight they are.

I've never had that happen, mine aren't that tight though, mainly just holding the two sides of the shoe against my foot. I don't pull up on the pedals in tri so not worried about how tight they are.

I had looser (longer) ones at the top originally, but then went to medium length laces when I felt they were too loose. I didn't grease them up, but had practiced a few times. It was just one of those, "I have to get into my shoes quick" moments that caused the top of my foot to stretch them a little too much. I don't think it affected me too much, but it was a pain to watch it waving in the wind. haha.

I'll lube it up for the next race.I'm sure that will help.

I'm thinking of doing something similar, but without the sewing part. Do you think that if I use the tongue holes to pass the laces, like in the picture, it will hold when I put the feet?

I tried doing that with my Louis Garneau LA84s and it helps, but the tongue still tends to slide down and bunch when putting my foot in. Most of the time I have to adjust the tongue afterwards. Fine in training but this would suck in a race. I think I will end up cutting and sewing the tongue.

Well certainly easier to quickly tighten while on the move relative to using a lace only system. And it's devoid of the bulky Velcro straps which most shoes have. The Boa would allow for the mouth of the shoe to be opened wide and quickly ratchets down. Same with the lace system, you can have the two side buckles opened to allow for the laces to be released and then locked down once the shoe is on.

it's a red herring... for triathlon applications you don't need lower laces at all

I am using these Elastic laces as well, so far so good, the key is to use the right sizes in the right hole locations to adjust to the tightness that you want.

Did you get the adult size? They seem too long. The ones I have come in a variety of lengths and the short ones look okay but most look too long. .

*edit* I laced these up and I am sending this option back as they are no where near tight enough.

Probably none. Myself and others who have modified the Giro shoes have done it for faster transitions as well as aero benefits. If you are going to be putting the shoe on in T1 prior to getting on the bike there isn't a need to remove the tongue. That said, I would still go with elastic laces if I was leaving the tongue - otherwise the tied laces are just hanging in the breeze.

I echo what Nate said. If you don't need to get them on while on the bike you can keep the tongue for sure. I would say that you should try to put a little loop in the top of the tongue so you can grab that and get in easier when off the bike. With the elastic laces the shoes are pretty tight and you could lose a nice chunk of time fumbling with the tongue in T1.

The one thing I like about velcro straps is that I can adjust tension. There are times my feet are more swollen, etc. It seems with the elastic laces you have only one fit?

Nate,

Hard to tell, but did you just stitch the tongue in the upper corner on each side, or did you stitch all the way down the part of the tongue that you left in the shoe?

That seems like the perfect solution! I loved the idea of the zipper but was worried about getting the fit right so those elastic bands on the side would make that basically the perfect shoe for mounting while riding while still being able to use them in training with socks if you want to. Kudos!

I haven't seen one yet. What I have learned through my shoe work is that narrow, simple design and NEW shoes that have a good shape are going to perform the best.

Buckles, straps, dials are going to add frontal area aero along with changing the cD.

Remember. It is also about goals, comfort and ease of use. When I started this process it was as a pro who sometimes even races sprints for money where seconds matter.

Ok, here's a little write up how I did this. Like I said unfortunately I didn't take photos during the process but I'll try to explain it.
  1. The first thing to do was to cut out the tongue. After you have guts to do that, your options are only limited by your imagination ;D
  2. Then I searched a place that has things to work with shoes. Because you need a sewing machine something like this to acces the show for sewing. Most likely any shoemaker has one.
  3. I then discussed my idea with that person and went shopping for zipper and elastic bit. My original idea was to use neoprene, but I couldn't find any so I went with the elastic band.
  4. Be mindful when choosing the zipper, the underside should be smooth. Some metallic ones for example has very rough edges on the underside which would make you bleed nicely when used against bare skin.
  5. First thing when actually starting the process was to measure and cut the zipper in wanted length. This was pretty simple. Just put your feet in the shoe, align zipper where you would like it, mark -> cut -> sew to keep it closed.
  6. Then we attached the elastic band on that side of zipper where we wanted it. At this point you should have plenty of length in it.
  7. Then we sew the zipper to the shoe, leaving the elastic band side still unattached.
  8. Then with foot in the shoe I estimated the stretch I wanted on the band by pulling it over the shoe when zipper was closed. This is why you want plenty of length in it. When you have a good idea about the stretch, you mark the line where you want to sew the elastic band to the shoe when it's strecthed.
  9. Cut the elastic band in proper length and when zipper is open it's easy to hold in place for sewing. You can use a bit of glue to help in this.
  10. Try it out and maybe glue a bit of fabric on the inside of shoe on top of the cut zipper end to make sure it doesn't cause any issues.
  11. Enjoy you custom speedmachines.

remind me why I race in these, other than it's the slowtwitch way. for me, its definitely not ease of use. have raced in them all summer. modified like most with no tongue. even have a nice grommet in the heal for rubber band. have tried flat elastic laces and the silicone bands, skipping eyelets with both. I've managed the flying mount in every race, but one. it's never been easy though. last week in Austin with ice cubes for feet there was no chance I was getting my feet in on the fly, but I tried. toe warmers didn't help as they constricted the shoe even more, but I literally had to stop, lay my bike down, unclip the shoes, and put them on. obviously under those conditions I should have dried my feet in T1 and put socks and shoes on there. Still, in ideal conditions it's always been a hassle. The shoes are very comfortable and light. slowtwitch says they are aero, so help me get in them faster. and no, I'm not going to put them on in T1 unless I absolutely have to, because I always follow rule #1.

I use Speedplay, so I just slip them on ITU style in T1 and run with them to mount line. No issues and it's a wash time-wise.

From there, I ride with them laced with these rubber pieces as the lace and a soccer cleat "sweet spot" to cover them. Tongue remains attached to shoe, which is how I slip them on so quickly actually.

Can you can post a picture of your specific setup. How specifically were your old shoes working better and what shoe was that? Do you practice getting into them or out of them. Usually the day before the race I'll do 10 mounts and 10 dismount just to practice mounts in general, but also getting in and out of these shoes.

If it will help, you can easily add a heal loop if you want and use the spare elastic - just a drill a hole and tie a know in the elastic. The reason I don't is I suspect at least at some yaw it would add drag. I never intended so many people to use a shoe like this but it says a lot when an athlete like Jesse Thomas uses them. If they didn't work for him, I am sure he would continue to use his Pearl Izumi's that he used for years as a sponsored athlete. YMMV, but I am sure we can get them to work better for you. Lace tension is pretty important in the overall setup. You can't have them too tight.

This is a good idea. I'm constantly wondering why I think it's faster to do a flying mount then struggle to get into my shoes. For 70.3+ this seems like a no brainer. Thanks.

Break a cleat, slip and fall are probably the two biggest. Breaking a cleat is less of an issue if you are a Speedplay user. Also just depends on things like the grass if it is wet and muddy, how far you have to run with your bike etc.

Definitely not too tight. Getting out of them is no issue. For setup, I rubber band them to the front mech and rear skewer respectively. However, the opening is so small that when I mount, I don't slip my feet right in. That would be ideal I guess, but I also like to get away from the bike mount line ASAP, so I pedal with my feet on top of the shoes. By that point, the rubber bands have broken, obviously. From there it is pretty tricky to get my toes in as the shoe is dangling. Mostely due to the size of the opening which creates another problem...... when I try to get my toes in, the shoe just spins back towards me with the pedal. A heel loop might help, but I think my major issue is the size of the opening. Some of the zipper mods seen on here are cool, but I have a pair of factor techlace's that I would modify before I went that route. Like Boris Steins, but I would probably remove the laces too.

Personally, I try to get one foot in the shoe, which I can do from the mount line and the other foot stays on top. I have learned to let the shoe dangle down and scoop it with my toes for the other foot once I get going. Sometimes I get both feet in like in the following pic. Jesse was actually ahead of me out of the swim and ran faster thru transition than I did. He put the arm warmers on as he was running thru transition.
I did have to reach down at a corner and pull up the heal tab as I kind of smooshed it a bit.

Haha, he's staring you down!

How high do you lace them up. In other words, how many eyelets are exposed at the top?

Ideal is getting feet in on the mount. At least one foot, like you said. If you don't, it makes it that much harder because you just flatten out the shoes with your feet.

Thanks for all the feed back, btw!

How do you people doing the zippers get the 'tightness' dialed in? I find the shoes pretty uncomfortable unless they are relatively loose. I'd like to do the zipper thing, just nervous they will end up being too tight.

To get the fit feeling OK, I started by sewing the non-zip side of the tongue to the shoe. Then I sewed the zip to the other side of the shoe. Finally I started removing slices of the tongue and then holding it all in place to see how it felt. I didn't see the point in making it too tight, but will be using the shoes over the winter on the track to make sure they are really comfortable before the first tri of the season in May. Hopefully won't need to make any adjustments...!

I just sewed it - I actually used two adjacent ventilation holes and went in through one and back out through the other, but I'm sure you could go through the leather easily enough too with a slightly curved leather needle. I didn't go all the way through to the inside of the shoe, just underneath the outer white leather.

I used elastic material to attach the zipper. That way it sits snug and even on you foot. It also allows some swelling of the foot because of the stretch.

For me this works well for hours of endurance riding as well as in 1000+ watts all out sprints and everything in between.

This forum is so nerdish that this thread has more than 200 posts only dealing with laces of a special type of shoe of a special brand.

A tad off topic but I am curious how everyone goes about keeping their shoes nice and clean. I have been taking the time to wipe them down after each ride. However recently as its turned colder I have been wearing shoe covers over them and I'm pissed to have noticed the red interior of my shoe covers are starting to stain the white leather.

Anyone care to share their cleaning methods?

If you are talking about the Giro Empire shoes, and keeping them clean - three things:

1) Switch to the black laces - the cloth laces are hard to keep really clean and white. The black ones never show the dirt and always look black! (If using elastic laces for triathlon - go with black)

2. The fabric that Giro uses on the Empire shoes is amazing. It wipes clean, from mud and dirt with damp cloth. Make sure you do this right away when you do get back from a ride where the shoes get dirty.

3. When you know you will be riding in dirty conditions use shoe covers. I'm a big fan of the DeFeet Slipstream shoe covers. I have a couple of pair of the black ones. They pick up the dirt, when riding in dirty conditions, not the shoes. I just toss the Slipstream shoe covers in the wash after the ride.

I can't honestly say for sure if it is the exact same as I am not sure what the difference between non-roll and roll is and the one you suggested which doesn't use that terminology. What I will say is there are many solutions to this problem and there is no right answer. For all I know this lace could be even better and there are always other creative uses for elastic.

What I really want is to see Cody Beals shoes in person! The way he has the tongue and Velcro looks VERY fast and easy to get in/out of as well. I know he is creative and specific with what he uses so I can't imagine he'd do something unless it was good.

Side note, I am getting ready to get my kit made for next year and you and Beals have me interested in just going with the rear zip suit since I believe both of you tested it to be the fastest suit. But I don't want to hijack this thread anymore.

Rear zip suit... Total hijack, yes, but it tested very fast for me. Brian didn't like it and made me redo the run. The reason I even considered it was because it was testing so fast in the pool. As for the shoes, a few others have done something similar to Cody as well. Kelsey Withrow did the same with the Specialized Sub 6 shoe too. Velcro on the tonque is another option, for me I have stuck with laces.

For me it is just the fact that they are so expensive and spesh does a great job of actually controlling (fixing) prices!!! The SLX is pretty sleek and they have had some nice color ways on the ACC as well.

100% agree with you ericMPro on the Specialized shoes being very tight. I can only use them in road racing. Totally love the Sub 6 shoe for shorter crits, but even long road races and rides over 3 hours I opt for something else as they are too tight on my foot.

Matt Russell was I think the second professional, Kirsty Jahn might have been 2nd, regardless, Matt and I talked about my design and he had them up and running by May 2016 for Wildflower. He had the exact same lacing pattern then and he said they worked very well for him. He hasn't changed his lacing design at all since that first race. The lacing pattern is going to be individual as the lace will sit on the part of the feet at spots and you need to find a pattern that works for you. I first noticed Jesse Thomas with these at Augusta this year fwiw. No idea how long he has been on them.

If I had to do it again I might experiment with just maybe 3/4 of inch to an inch of tongue. I think with my feet it might work and help fill in the gap.

How does removing the tongue effect the sizing of the shoe? I tried 45's which felt really tight, 45.5's felt exactly the same as the 45's, but 46 seems much too big. Worried about how quickly I can get into a tighter shoe, but with the 46 if no tongue makes them fit even more loosely, they'd be way too big. Thanks.

I don't think it made a huge impact but it does loosen it a bit. But the big for me was the no tongue and no socks made it a bit better. But I have narrowish feet so they fit well before that.

Those shoes that Jesse Thomas is using are the new Giro TechLace with the Giro strap and lace system removed and some kind of elastic laces put in. They are hands down, I believe the lightest production cycling shoes on the market! They are lighter than the Giro SLX, that claimed that accolade last year.

More here - http://www.giro.com/ca_en/techlace/ or here http://www.giro.com/...olight-techlace.html

The Giro Empire ACC & SLX have been my road shoes for the past 3 years. Love them!

That is a good question and I think the answer depends on your own needs, feet width, lacing pattern etc. For me I prefer a little loose but based on the nervousness I have received in questions that have come across my desk or I have come across I would say that many people like them tight in their minds. For me it was the same size I have been in other shoes and cutting the tongue out seems to give a little space.

I was so inspired by this post... especially by the zipper mods... it made me almost order a Giro Empire SLX and tinker with it... then I found this for 179 € somewhere... just laces under that cover. 220 grams. Will probably just cut out the tongue, a couple of elastic laces... and there yo go :)

Maybe there is some feedback out there from others who have installed a zipper - I know of a few people that have done it. To me the problem is that your feet will change (swelling, socks no socks) and a zipper is pretty unforgiving. I always suggest people find a lacing pattern and tension that works for them. It is the reason I experimented with two different tensions (high tension lower laces, less tension upper laces) to try and find the optimal setup. My setup works for me and 5-10 dismount / mounts the day before the race is a great way to practice for perfection on race day.

I got a pair of Empire ACC's last year and had the same question. Sizing kind of differs from brand to brand so here's the best I can do.

I'm a 43.5 in an old pair of s-works shoes (with the ratchet system) and a 43.5 in a pair of trivents.

I got a 43.5 in empires and while they fit well they're a tad bit tighter than the specialized shoes. If I wear a thick sock they're too tight, they're fine with lighter socks. I like the fit, they're snug without being uncomfortable. I just ordered a pair of sentrie techlace's in size 44 to avoid the sock issue.

So...they're true to size,maybe a bit snug.

Agree on the slight tightness for the width in the toe box. I was a perfect fit for a Shimano size 46, but the SLX was slightly uncomfortable tight and I had to bump up to a 46.5. I am a little worried about heel slippage but nothing so far.

I decided not to cut the tongue out.

Mine are set up with flat elastic laces that slip right on t1, Shimano road cleats are fairly easy to run in too.

Also means you can give it 100% effort without faffing around getting you your feet out/in.

Those look nice but seem like they’d be really hard to get on with one hand and quickly.

That was my thought, too. Unless they just "flop" into place, and stick together it seems like it would be more fiddling.

I bought a pair and tried them out for a 65+ mile ride. I used the original laces that came with the shoes. I couldn't make the laces very snug as the magnets "flop" into place and can really pinch the top of the foot (and it is not a pleasant feeling). So I made them a just a bit loose, but not too loose where your foot is not slipping all over the shoe. I also added moleskin to the inside of the magnet (not pictured) to limit irritation of my foot. I had zero issues for the entire ride. Going to do some testing with transition work (entering in/out while on the bike), but most likely will be using this system for the next race. Each magnet adds 15 grams to each shoe, so it adds a little extra weight. In the past, I have used elastic laces, put the shoes on in T1 and ran to the bike. I am hoping this set up will save me a few more seconds... If I was starting with a fresh pair of shoes, I may keep the tongue in entirely as that may help with slipping into the shoe and reducing any potential irritation. I still have the tongues, but not sure I want to spend the time to sew them back on.

Very clean!
Are these working for you?
Would you do anything differently in hindsight?

This thread about laces that are on shoes has 3x more views then the ENTIRE 2018 Thread about the Giro d'Italia which included Froome's 80K breakaway. This is the ultimate intantiation about this forum caring more about gear than the sports that the gear is used for LOL!

Not sure how to take that Paul. I did not follow the Giro much this year but I do follow this thread! Lol

Just an idea I have and wanted your feedback especially Thomas. I got a set of the Empire Knit yesterday as they look like they would be the most comfortable of any bike shoe I've ever seen and was thinking of having the tongue stitched along down the outside the lace holes on the inside side of the shoe and maybe even up an inch from the toe of the outside. At worst the tongue will only roll in a fraction on the outside and you can just push a finger under the tongue and roll it out. Alas I can always unpick the stitching and cut out the tongue. I like the idea of just slipping them on in T1 like running shoes myself but will trial on the fly. The first time I ever tried it I dropped my shoe on the road and have been scarred ever since...

See the irony. A set of shoes named after a Grand Tour and a thead about laces on those shoes gets more interest than the actual Grand tour that the product and associated laces are named after!!!!

No wonder the "bike guys" shake their heads at us "tri guys"!!!!

The shoes come with a little elastic sewn in place halfway down the tongue that you would normally use to hold the ends of the laces in place so they don't get caught in the chainring. With no laces that becomes redundant so I unstitched it and attached it at the back as a heel loop.

The problem is that they are lace-up underneath the zipped aero cover, so not very practical for fast transitions.

Remove laces and glue the 2 layers together and just use zipper?

I can get a deal for €125 on a pair of the Giro SLX (EC90 model) ... seems like a bargain.
Is this currently still considered a viable option for an aero tri-shoe (quarter/HIM)?
Or are there any better alternatives around this price-point nowadays?

In the random event that anyone should care what I did to these shoes... and I wish I had taken a picture, but I wanted to not permanently modify the shoes. I put thin elastic laces on the shoes, then put a piece of gorilla tape across the laces and tongue, attaching that tape to just one side of the shoe’s lace eyelets. I wrapped that around the top of the tongue of the shoe and then down the inside, so that one side of the tongue was taped to that same side of the shoe, but the other side of the tongue could still slide back and forth to accommodate sizing and sliding my foot in. The gorilla tape covered all but a little of one side of the elastic laces which made it look aero! And the tape kept the tongue from sliding down inside the shoe when I put my foot in. Once the race was over I removed the tape and put the regular laces back in. Only tried it for one race but it worked fine.

My redneck solution to the rubber band attachment was to remove one of the screws for the heel plates, and put a paper clip between the heel plate and the sole of the shoe. Then I had a small bit of paper clip loop sticking out the back to hook the rubber band on to.

I don't know about the duck tape idea...

But the paper clip under the heal screw idea is a nice add. Thanks for that!

I am thinking about for next season just sewing the tongue to one side of the shoe. I like having the full length of the tongue because I feel like it helps me slide my foot past the laces, and by only attaching it to one side of the shoe, the shoe can still expand to let your foot in. It should still keep the tongue from sliding down, especially if I can attach the laces to the tongue as well. But the duct tape wasn’t as terrible as it sounded!!

Don't get me wrong. I've got nothing against duck tape or your usage of it. It's just not I the same league as the paper clip idea.

With TT not needing a quick shoe lacing, what’s the consensus speed wise of just flat laces versus using an adult “soccer lace cover” over the laces?

You can get those for like $4 a pair.

Not a reply to you specifically. Just posting my version of the concept in this thread.

I picked up a pair of Giro Empire E70 Knit for $100 this spring and removed the tongues by cutting a few stitches. I initially added some ROUND elastic laces (because that's all Walmart had). The round laces proved to be not-so-comfy on the bare feet and probably not-so-aero. I've since swapped out to proper flat elastic laces.

I also stitched a small loop on the heel to give me something to hook rubber bands to.

The knit material is excellent comfort wise. They are, by far, the lightest shoes I've ever owned. It feels like I'm just wearing socks, but with a stiff sole.

I can get into and out of them faster than a traditional tri shoe with Velcro closures, yet I've never once had my foot slide around on a hard effort or climb.

I’m ready to take the plunge on the Empires and find your modifications appealing. I appreciate the clean finish and practical application.

Would you do anything differently if you were setting up your shoes today?

If anyone is scared of modifying 300$ shoes, I did it to a pair of DHB Dorica road shoes. https://www.wiggle.com/dhb-dorica-road-shoe-1/

I bought them three months ago for 50 (they're more now). But they work. Granted, not nearly as nice as the Empire, but I just wanted to see if I would like the lace set up. I may switch to Empires next seasons, but I've done one olympic and one half-iron so far. They're way easier to get into than my old Bont Riots. Plus I use them for every trainer session.

I’ve gone halfway and cut the tongue partially half way up and glued to the outside. Then xpand laces on the other side to allow me to put them on and keep them tight.

NB currently too snug to put on while riding, will be putting them on in T1

I bit the bullet and cut the tongue a few months ago.

Elastic laces (skipping every other hole). At the top I tied off a knot at the end of each to keep it in place, then trimmed off the excess and singed it with a lighter.

Works great.

How tight are the shoes on your feet?

I bought cheap DHB laced shoes and was riding with them for a few months. Mid session I switched back to my Bont Vaypor Classics (the laced ones, carbon sole, heat moldable) and it was night and day. The chepa shoes are straight garbage.

Is there a way to get the shoe to really hug your foot without being so snug that I cant get my feet in after T1?

Not about laces, but does anyone have experience with the updated upper? Looks like they switched from a synthetic leather upper to Synchwire (which they use in the Imperial road shoe). I'm guessing this will make them a bit more breathable and keep them from getting 'soggy.' But does it affect sockless comfort at all?

I've just found a cheap pair of SLX and am looking to set them up for flying mounts per this thread.

I'm wondering if anyone who has used the zipper option can provide feedback after LT use? Are you still using same system?

Elastic laces seem to work but zipper seems even better!

Is the zipper option in this thread? I use a pair of ACCs and we just bought a pair of older SLXs for my wife, which I was planning on using elastic for as well but I like the concept of a zipper.

AJ Baucco had a bomber pair of zippers made. I forget how he liked them. I am sure I made comment in this thread somewhere but I suspect zippers are tough. Part of the beauty of elastic is it naturally expands and contracts and the foot will swell while riding, especially if you are consuming a lot of salt and it is a hot day. You could always send AJ a message, I may send this post to him for feedback.

There are quite a few examples. AJ Baucco's is here. Another couple of my favourites:

  • From ni31mo I think these look the business but worry about flexibility per Thomas' comment:

  • From aoja, these use elastic which would help the flexibility issue:

Yes, I'm still using mine with no issues. They are my race shoes, plus I used them over the winter at the velodrome. I have a relatively long/narrow foot, and was reasonably careful not to make them too tight initially.

I have my Garneau LA84s set up with a zipper very similar to AJ's (zipper down the middle). Have raced two years on them, all good. Only short course though so there's that caveat, but I used some somewhat elastic fabric on either side of the zipper so there is a little stretch.
