Slightly OT: Blue Tooth headsets- what is the protocol when...
A person is in a retail store. They are wearing a Bluetooth cell phone headset. Aside from the fact that they look slightly like Uhuru from Star Trek (or Chekov, as the case may be), am I supposed to:

A. Carry on a normal conversation with them as though they were not on the phone.

B. Ask them politely if they are speaking on the phone, then ask if they need any assistance or have a question.

C. Sort of hover around for a moment until I deduce that they are not on the phone.

D. Set my phaser to "stun".

And, what does it mean when their head is flashing? That little blue light on the side of their head- I mean, does that mean their boss is downloading a message to their brain from the mother ship?

Blue tooth users- any thoughts on what the acceptable and courteous protocol for me to interact with customers is when they are wearing this? I am old, my mother taught me not to interupt a person who is on the phone. Trouble is, now everybody is on the phone all the time....

Come on Tom, you've got to have a connection that can get you a cell phone jammer. Hide it behind a clothing rack and it will make all cell phones in the immediate area disfunctional. We use them once and a while, with the government's blessing of course. Isreal is the place to get them nowadays. Got any friends in Isreali intel?

Cheers, Karma

I think the standard protocol these days is to send them a text message asking them if they are currently talking to someone. If they aren't busy, they call you back and because of course you have a gps enabled phone, they can locate you. Once you have visual you can just continue the conversation on the phone or go analog at that point if you prefer.

"Friends" and "Israeli Intelligence" are two phrases that seldom go together.

Tom,

I would not disturb that person at any cost. They are getting very sensitive, critical, and life saving information about the brain surgery that they are about to perform - presumably right after they leave your shop!

What I do is wear mine and talk really loud turning my face constantly in the direction of my Motorolla Brain Sucker - as if this is going to improve clarity (the damn ear piece is at a constant distance from my mouth no matter how far I turn towards is...little prick). In my loud talking in a bike shop I proclaim that My Cervelo is a brazillian times better than the shitty Treks that are laden with ShitmaNO road trash in this shop...then I talk about when the Porsche is going to be out of the service dept so that I can take it to pick up my boat and helicopter from my new buddy George Bin Laden Washington (who recently moved here from Madagascar as he claims in a crate with penguins - but I think he looks Arab)...anyways George got me the helicopter that I have to speak loudly when I am near it and thus speak loudly on my blue tooth headset in a bike shop...

After who ever I am talking to quite loudly hangs up I yell "You are fired you worthless human shit bag...oh, and by the way I have been fucking your wife"..that always gets some looks...

Dont expect respect - DEMAND IT!!!!

Oh...I own but only use my headset in the car or at my desk....NEVER in a store and NEVER EVER while also ordering lunch...I really fucking hate that.

Hang a large poster in the shop saying " Bluetooth Headsets cause Testicular Shrinkage..." They will stop and read it, likely looked stunned and remain silent- you jump in and intervene...

Voila

You know why they cause shrinkage? Cause the sign scares them and men put the headset in their pocket...this starts the process...you think Lance had radiation on his balls...Motorolla has some plans that they dont want us to know about...they are in it with George Bush and the North Koreans! They want US mens balls to be as small as the balls on a sterotypical 5'2" N. Korean man....lord have mercy.

You could always try the Vulcan neck/nerve pinch thing. If it doesn't work, you could just say you were trying to grab the flashing thingy off his ear and missed :)

I would then point him toward the flashing red rear lights that you have on display to make him feel at home.

B) If they're no using the BT they'll take it out ... POP!!! ... Wait on them when THEY are good and ready ... when they're ready to pay, tell them you need to call Star Fleet to approve their credit card.

Unfortunatley there is an increasing incidence of people wearing them - when they're not talking - just to appear cool (if you can imagine that)

I have one and it reserved for use in the car only - but my wife has started talking to SO MANY PEOPLE who have walked up to her talking - only to realize after she has answerered their question - that they are on the phone with soeone else.

She hates it when people just idely walk around chatting on their headset while they appear to be doing everydaythings.

It isn't going to stop anytime soon either.

Tom - my suggestion - hold up your hand to your ear - old school style - as if you are pretending to talk into a phone - point at them and mouth the words "Are you on the phone?"

Seems to work well around our office where too many folks think it is cool to simply walk around wearing them (and their mobile phones are probably in their cars anyway)

Irritating aspect of today' society - yes - but you still want to be attentive to your customer or you stand the potential of losing the sale or coming across as not giving a shit right?

Either that or make a small sign -

"Attention Blue tooth users - Bike Sport Michigan asks that you refrain from smoking, eating or bluetoothing while in our stores. The use of blue tooth and portable electronic devices can interfere with our ability to communicate with you properly. Now return your seats and tray tables to the upright positions and what can we do for you today?"

I hate cell phones in public places (standing in line, etc...). I think it's rude and inconsiderate of everyone else. But, I think the protocol is to go ahead and pretend the BT headset isn't there unless the person appears to be talking to him/herself.

The real problem is we can no longer spot who is crazy and talking to themselves vs those on the phone and just rude...

True. Then, of course, what do you do when the customer that you are speaking with suddenly answers the phone in mid-sentence? I suppose in that case, you could sell him or her a bike that doesn't fit.

Maybe the protocol question should be for the headset user. Perhaps it should be their responsibility to take it off when they come in a store. I can't say I would be all that worried about it. If they wanted to have an uninterrupted and private conversation they should stay outside or in the car.

well, since they are being rude and inconsiderate, I'd go for D every time.. though I suppose B is what you have to do.

We use headsets all day in the office, so the protocol is simple - if the headset is on, there's a customer on the line, no interruptions.

I remember sitting in a plane waiting in line for takeoff, woman next to me was arguing loudly via headset, with her ex about her retirement money which he wanted a part of in the divorce settlement - learnt a great deal more about her life than I wanted to know. I was frankly embarrassing.

"It is a good feeling for old men who have begun to fear failure, any sort of failure, to set a schedule for exercise and stick to it. If an aging man can run a distance of three miles, for instance, he knows that whatever his other failures may be, he is not completely wasted away." Romain Gary, SI interview

It truely amazes me this obssseion with being hooked in by cell phone or Blackberry ALL the time. I went down to Chicago on business a few months ago. It was mostly business types on the flight. It must have been a flight full of heart/brain surgeons all consulting on life-threatening situations because evryone was on cell phones and Blackberries right up until the doors closed on for the flight and then all those cell phones and Blackberreis where all fired up again immedatly when the doors opened in Chicago. I find it strange, because I actually work in a buisness that has serious time sensitive deadlines - the magazine publishing business, and I never have a need to be hooked up like that!

e. order a cell phone jammer off the internet. Or if you want to be legal, download the instructions to build one off MIT's website and build one for educational purposes only. Place your educational project in your store entrance.
