Flo 30 Wheelset First Impressions
I managed to get in on the Flo 30s in the latest pre-order. I was looking to simplify my bike and wheel collection down to one road bike and one wheelset (I'm currently at four including this one), so I jumped on this. Really wanted to try out wide rims for a while, having read and heard good things about them, and these seemed like the wheels to do the trick...

A bit of my on wheel history for perspective: I've ridden both clinchers and tubulars, various tires and both butyl and latex tubes. Road wheels: Ksyrium Elites --> DT Swiss Mon Chasserals 1450 (still have them) --> Zipp 303 tubulars --> Zipp 404 tubulars --> Zipp 404 alu clinchers (still have them; they're for sale on the classifieds) --> Neuvation R28sls (still have them). Have also ridden clincher and tubular HED3s on TT bikes, but I'm purely a road rider nowadays (sprinter type).

Picture of the bike with wheels below. I've got Panaracer R'air tubes under Continental GP4000s tires. Wheels have been de-stickered to match my bike (an MC053 built up mostly with SRAM Force).

Firstly: these wheels are fast. Not the lightest wheels; my DT swiss wheels and Neuvation wheels (as well as Zipp tubulars) feel lighter in terms of acceleration, but not by much. Accelerating on these wheels do feel faster than my Zipp 404 alu clinchers though. In terms of holding speed, they do better: rolling at 22-23mph is rather effortless on the flats. Feel slightly slower than Zipp 404 alu clinchers, but again, not by much.

These wheels are certainly stiff though, stiffer than the DT swiss and Neuvation wheels. Because of the wide rims and the older-generation SRAM Force brakes, I've had to set up my brake very close to the rims - they touch the rims with the slightest pull, rather than 1/3 of the way like I usually prefer. Despite how close they are, the brakes don't rub at all in a sprint. Acceleration on these wheels feels solid - not snappy, but solid. To be any snappier, I think you'd need light tubular rims.

Most importantly, these wheels are *comfortable*. These wheels feel a lot more like my commuting wheels (with 700x28c Panaracer Pasalas on 29er rims) on my commuter than my other aluminum road wheels (which both have GP4000s tires and latex tubes) - bumps on the roads are just muted. I was actually actively looking for bad patches of road to go over just to see how they felt like (not much at all), while on my other wheels, I'd normally actively avoid them, and brace myself for how much they'd jar me, especially on my boneshaker of a road bike. These wheels actually made a stiff overbuilt carbon bike feel comfortable.

Bottom line: These are the ultimate do-it-all wheels for the amateur road racer on a budget. At $500, it'll be a wheelset that you would dare to race in crits (and yes, the grip feels pretty good on these wheels, although given that i was riding on new tires, I didn't push it) without slowing you down too much when the road turns upwards. It'll be comfortable for training, and will leave you fresher for the end of long hard races. For almost a third of Zipp 101s (which would be the most comparable wheelset out there right now).

For the majority of my ride, I was thinking to myself: SRAM should just acquire Flo wheels, Quarq style. Would be the perfect platform to test out direct-to-consumer internet marketing, Flo Cycling would get the supply chain management that it so sorely needs to grow its business, and we all get a chance to get and ride Flo wheels. Everybody wins. With SRAM on board, imagine selling complete ride-ready wheels to directly to customers over the internet, already shod with tires and cassettes installed. I suspect this will be appealing to many potential consumers, and would broaden the customer base to one that includes the less mechanically competent.

Nice review,
am looking at getting an allround wheel and was wondering if these are the best bang for the buck considering they are around $500.

any other contenders or is this the best choice?

SRAM already has an aero wheel brand, and I don't think they complement each other well...

Totally agree. Flo has a completely different business model. They'll have no trouble meeting demand once they get their capital built up.

You could get decent wheels for cheaper in the form of SRAM S30s (replaced by Zipp 30s), if you source around for used. Their shape is a little different though, and I think Flo has a shape that's closer to optimal.

Other contenders include Soul S3.0 wheels (Bike Soul[/url], which have a similar rim shape to SRAM S30 wheels, but they're probably not CFD designed), custom wheels built up with Pacenti SL23 Rims (Fairwheels Bikes, but not as deep at 26mm), and perhaps Neuvation Cycling's R28SLW wheels (also not as deep at 26mm).

Still, given my awareness of the other options, I did choose the Flo 30s...

Flo does have a completely different business model from SRAM as seen by the consumers, which is how they've differentiated themselves, and is why they are so successful now. If they competed directly with SRAM/Zipp or HED, at their current size, it's hard to survive. Disruptive innovation works.

Which is precisely why an acquisition could make sense for both parties. Given that product lines don't overlap strongly, and acquisition would be a business expansion into a market segment that isn't currently being tapped by SRAM/Zipp: truly aero wheels on a budget.

With Flo's current line-up of wheels, it does seem like they'd have some intellectual property that would be worth acquiring, although it might be best to run the business semi-independently (a la Quarq) at the onset at least - might be a nice experiment for direct sales that could be applied to other bicycle products in the future, although wheels really lend themselves to this (little to no mechanical effort needed on the consumer end).

Flo gets to incorporate the sourcing and distribution capabilities of SRAM, kickstarting their growth - as trained CFD engineers, they have better things to do with their time than to sticker up, pack and ship wheels every pre-order.

And everybody who wants Flo wheels are able to get them without that mad rush every pre-order. Something about needing to be at my computer exactly at 1pm on a particular day in order to get my order in irks me.

Food for thought... I wonder if Chris/Jon@Flo even have this on their radar...

The wheels look great. I'd love to try a set. Honestly the 30s are the only ones that appeal to me for the type of riding I do.

I just wish they'd ditch the black brake track. It looks great new but...

I highly doubt you can distinguish any difference between the wheelsets you mention in terms of speed. Even the difference in inertia you describe in acceleration is unlikely to be within the measurement a human can do by feel.

No doubt they are nice wheels, but don't kid yourself.

Speed can be combined with perceived exertion (measured by heart rate, or how long one can sustain a speed on flat ground) to be an indirect measure of wheel aerodynamics, especially if I'm on a long flat road that I'm familiar with. Yes, I'm aware of the limits of human perception (~5% under the best circumstances), but I suspect they apply to static systems, and not instrument-aided indirect measurements over time.

e.g. if I can usually hold 300W for 5 minutes, and that puts me at 24mph on wheelset A, if I notice that I can hold 24mph for 5 minutes 30 seconds on wheelset B, that's a perceivable difference (even if it might be only a difference of 7W - I'm going by my own real power data here).

I'll be more rigorous when I've got my power meter with me, but I'd like to think I tend to be quite sensitive to differences in wheel aerodynamics since I usually adopt a very aerodynamic position to begin with (my back is flat and parallel to the ground when I'm in my drops, and I tend to be the fastest descender in most pelotons despite being only 160lbs). So differences in equipment aerodynamics tend to be amplified in my case, since they make up a greater proportion of my total drag.

As for differences in acceleration, while it might be hard to compare wheel inertia directly by feel, I've experienced the difference when it comes to closing gaps while racing crits - how long I take to close a gap is extremely sensitive to how fast I can accelerate.

So what can I be sure of in my review? I'm pretty sure about wheel stiffness (i.e. they're stiff), since I used my brake pads as an absolute measure, rather than by feel. I'm sure of comfort, because the differences really is drastic. Acceleration "feels" somewhere in between, although I bet that might have been influenced by my own knowledge of the rim weights, but I will confirm that in more real-world scenarios. Wheels do seem pretty fast, but today was a really hot day in Boston, so my on perception might be confounded by the heat.

Still, they're a pretty good wheelset, and in my situation, stiffness and comfort alone (along with the lack of a perceivable drop in speed and acceleration) are enough to warrant a positive review. Oh, and the price is right too...

I'm not seeing it.

There is a reason why Flo wheels are a good value. Real design and engineering work and attention to detail, with minimal advertising and no middle man. Sram is mass market with high overhead. There is no room for the margins they like to make unless the price of the wheels goes up. I'm pretty sure Sram is already sourcing wheels for a lower price than Flo. I know for a fact that retail markups can be 5x the factory cost or more.

I think Flo's model is awesome. I love to buy stuff straight from the guys who are intimately involved. The capital limitations restrict how quickly they can grow... but that isn't such a bad thing. A lot of companies implode when they try to grow too fast.

And I'm sure if the Flo guys wanted a "job" they would have never launched this project in the first place.

...and, in regards to the effect of different wheels, how fast you accelerate is much more a function of wheel aerodynamics than any typical inertia differences...by a couple of orders of magnitude, in fact. Heck, you should know that ;-)

Even rolling resistance differences in the tires/tubes on the wheels can "swamp" any inertial differences. Actually, I suspect that what most people perceive as a lightweight tubular wheel being "easier to spin up" is actually the result of the lower rolling resistance of the latex tubed, high end tires glued to the wheels, as compared to the "regular" tires and butyl tubes typically run on clincher wheels.

Human perception can be a funny thing...

No, please. Prices would go up, red tape would increase, models would be "discontinued" due to competing lines, etc. The Flo brothers are already doing an excellent job of at running their brand.

I'd almost agree if not for the fact that I used to run Conti competitions on my tubulars, which have butyl tubes in them, and are not the greatest in terms of rolling resistance. A straight comparison between 404 clinchers and tubulars (which I assume have similar aerodynamics), the former with Conti Attack/Force tires and latex tubes, gave me the impression that the clinchers were better at holding speed, but harder to accelerate than the clinchers. Maybe there's a presupposition bias there, but I also think that when you're close to your limits, marginal effects may be amplified (I'm talking about criterium conditions). Some other subtle effects might also be present, but difficult to measure.

For all you know, the better grip afforded by the wider contact patch of 23mm rims might give the same impression of a snappy wheel too.

I'll try to follow up with a more rigorous review when I get my power meter back. Put in another 40 miles on the wheels today, and they still felt great, although I'm going to experiment a little with tire pressure too.

Nah... it's either the inertial effects on the how easy it is to toss the bike side to side (which is something most people can feel) or it's just placebo.

the clinchers were better at holding speed

If what you mean by that is "I can hold 25mph easier with these heavy wheels" then no... not a chance. If you mean that you can coast farther when you quit pedaling, then at least that is true... but it's not enough to feel it.

Clinchers better at holding speed: I attribute it more to the tires (22mm on the front) and tubes (latex) than rim weight.

The differences between the wheels, tires and tubes you are comparing differ by a matter of a few watts. Not a chance you can tell a difference by your speed vs effort.

This is why power meters are useful for cycling, because we humans cannot judge effort to that high of an accuracy.

I also managed to pick up a pair of the 30s on the last preorder and today was my first ride on them. I'm hesitant to make any sweeping claims but I will say I like the wheels. They certainly seem more stable than my previous Fulcrum Racing 4s. I hit 47mph on them this morning and everything still felt solid. The other noticeable difference is the rid quality. The wider rims allow a lower tire pressure which in turn makes for a much more comfortable ride.

I picked up a pair of Flo 30s as well. I'm coming from the Zipp 101s. The Flo 30 is only slightly heavier for the set at 44 grams total. This includes the rim strip on both sets. I couldn't feel a difference in weight. I do feel more comfort as compared to the 101s. Same tires, tubes and tire pressure. They do feel more responsive when sprinting as if there was less give. The spoke setup of 18f/20r on the Zipp 101 vs. the 20f/24r of the Flo 30 may contribute to that. I don't think there is as big of gap in price as many claim as new 101's can be had for $1k. Yes, it's still twice the price, but not 3x. The finish on my set of Flo 30s were only okay. I noticed some areas that were much rougher than others due to the extrusion process. The seam area on the wheels was also not the cleanest. Jon at Flo addressed these concerns and said it was normal. I also found a small dent on the rear wheel. Overall, I'm very happy with them as compared to my previous set of wheels.

These went onto an S-Works Tarmac SL3 and SRAM Rival brakes with no issues. The front brakes are completely open in order to fit however.

Thanks for this! My set of 30s has been in the hands of the Dutch postal services for well over a week now, for customs clearance... Next time, no more USPS for me, as Dutch postal services, who handle things from the border on, are hopeless. Hope they arrive in time for my race next weekend, but I guess it'll have to be done on my stock wheels.

Looking forward to trying the 30s on my road bike, first proper upgrade on it. Excited!

I also like my wheels. Sadly my first century with them was in a bit of rain, so the black anodizing came off pretty quick. They are pretty light, seem to roll well, and look good. The only issue, really, is that the lip isn't rounded much at all (at least mine have been deburred, but certainly no rounding - so a .005" radius or so on the outside lip) - so mounting tubes becomes a very patient process as pinch flatting during installation is really, really easy. Still, though, money well spent.

Funny. When I got my first set of tubulars (shallow Shimanos) with Vittoria EVO CX tires, the mechanic asked me how I liked the wheels.

My answer was, " I have no idea. But I LOVE the tires!"

Has anyone changed the rim tape on these to something thinner? I'm having a hard time installing tires when I flat. I'm using Conti GP4000s. On my old Zipp 101s, I could do it with bare hands, but not the Flo 30.

I wouldn't see why two strips of reenforced shipping tape or two strips of (yellow) Stan's rim tape wouldn't work if the tape is too thick. I use the Stan's on my FLO 60 and Bontrager RL Aero.

I picked up flo 30/60s a couple pre-orders ago. I've been getting a lot of flats with my 30s... not sure if it's just me being a noob or if there is something I'm missing. For what it's worth I haven't had any flats with the 60s and I'm using thinner tubes with those (the 80mm continental "race" tubes for the 60s vs the typical continental tubes for the 30s).

I've been training on my 60s (which are fantastic) until I figure out whats up with the 30s. I'm using new tires with them which makes the installation harder, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if I'm causing the pinch flat there.

1) Remove everything and make sure the inside of the rim is smooth; rough carbon or debris could be popping your tubes.

2) Make sure your tape is seated properly.

3) It's the front tire; although more weight sits on the rear, if you hit something, chances are you hit it with your front tire first. Glass slivers or whatnot could be a problem. If you go through everything and can determine it's road debris, riding a more durable tire on the front might be needed if your roads are crappy.

Yea; if you do need a new tire, Continental GP4000Ss are very fast and have pretty good puncture protection. Ive only had one flat, and that was on the rear when I rode a shoulder littered with piles of sand and glass, of which I constantly ran over.

I have GP4000 tires now, as those are the only with color, but I'll be getting 4000Ss when they wear out.

I use yellow Veloplugs on my 60s and 30s. Installing tires on the 60s isn't bad, but the 30s seem to take more effort.

You should sell a front 30 and a bare rim as a "kit" so people can lace up existing Powertaps. I plan on ordering a pair of 30s and tearing the back one down for the rim. It doesn't make me happy but there arent many good rim options.

Yes; first thing that came off. I do tell people who ask what wheels they are though, but i really don't like decals on my wheels.

Black color on brake track has come off though, although silver isn't too bad.

That may be an option in the future. At the current time the FLO 30 is still very new and we are using all of our rims for our current production. We also want to control the build/specifications for now since it's such a new product.

I hope that makes sense,

plus 1.

I am more then willing to buy a set as listed above so I can get a powertap laced into the hoop. I can't justify buying a complete rear wheel and pull it apart, that doesn't seem right. Unfortunately I am not going to wait until 2015 for a powertap/Flo 30 set to be released.

I was thinking the same thing, but ended up getting a Kinlin XC-279:

Very happy with the rim and how it built up with my PT hub. Been riding it 4 months now and no regrets.

Yes, there are lots of wide rimmed options out there these days. I like my Flo 60/90 and would like to stay loyal to the brand, but without a PT option or the ability to buy the hoop, I'm not going to be able to do that.

Hello crank based power meter...?

With the huge price drop on the PTG3, justifying a crank-based power meter is hard for someone planning to mainly use one wheelset. Given that one of Flo's selling points is race wheels you can use every day it seems odd that this is taking so long, and I'd say it could wind up hurting them if they weren't selling out so quickly. 2015 is a long way off for a slight tweak to drilling patterns and a new hub option.

The point is, ladies and gentleman, that speed, for lack of a better word, is good. Speed is right, Speed works. Speed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

Hello crank based power meter...?

I'd much rather change a rear wheel then to have to swap out the cranks depnding on which bike I want to ride. I also run a 165mm crank on my tri bike and 172.5mm on my road bike so swapping back and forth would not work. A PT, on the other hand, would be ideal.

Given that they are still selling out every order, I having a few people who aren't buying because of the lack of PT compatibility probably isn't a big concern at this point.

That is interesting. I would have thought that building the wheel would be the limiting factor in wheel production and that the extrusion process for an all aluminum rim would be the easy part. Just shows how little I know!

I got a set of 30s on the most recent order. You pay a small upgrade fee (~$30?) to get the Shim/SRAM 11 sp freehub. They also give you spacers so it'll work w/ 9/10 sp along w/ a 9/10 sp hub.

I would presume all the wheels are this way.

All wheels with the exception of the FLO DISC are currently 11spd compatible. We are still working out the DISC. The new spacing has forced us to change a few things around and we want to do some thorough testing before making it official.

We are not creating spacers, rather, we are adapting to the new spacing Shimano/SRAM have created. If there is a conversion kit available, we will make it available to all who already have FLO DISCs. It's a little early to tell right now.

I hope that makes sense.

That reminds me of an experience with neutral race support during a road race.

Front wheel flatted, the neutral VW Sportwagen dutifully pulls over. The lady asks me "Shimano or Campy?"

"Any front wheel."

"Yes, I know it's the front, but Shimano or Campy?"

"ANY front wheel!!"

"You're going to have to tell me wether it's Shimano or Campy!"

(Sigh) "Shimano. I need a Shimano front wheel."

On my 30's the rim tape won't stay put and the holes become uncovered, and I have a flat from that. Can't seem to keep the tape in place, its narrower than the rim, and very thick, hard, and plastic-y. I might try what Timetek recommended, with multiple strips of thinner tape and will try a thinner tube.

Two wheels good. Four wheels bad.

Sounds like a rim tape problem, there is nothing inherent about a wheel that would make it flat more, unless it had some jagged edge, so there is certainly a problem with your rim tape, tube installation or tire.

I finally got around to installing tires (GP4000s) on my Flo 30s. The Flo 30s have the factory rim tape, and I have to say that I have never had as much difficulty installing tires on a set of wheels. With my Zipp Firecrests the tires are easy to install without levers. With the Flo 30s I had to use two levers and a lot of cursing. If this is at least in part due to the thick factory rim tape, then I am certainly willing to give thinner rim tape a try. What width of rim tape did you find works well with the Flo 30s?

How do FLO 30s compare to other popular training wheel sets? Something like those posted below. From what I understand the FLO's are just an aluminium rim with a tapered carbon sleeve or am I incorrect? They require standard brake pads not carbon pads as well?

Mavic Cosmic Elite S
Mavic Ksyrium Equipe S
Reynolds Attack
Zipp 30

Yes, flo 30, standard pads.

Mavic Cosmic Elite - actually pretty favorable in comparison to Flo 30. Pretty aero

Mavic Kysrium may be the worst wheel in the world performance wise. but extremely durable and people seem to like the way they feel.

Reynolds Attack - dunno

Zipp 30 - pointless wheel imho. Expensiveish for no reason.

So of these wheels the only ones I'd be able to use and not change brake pads are the Reynolds? Now if only I can find a Front Attack only wheel to purchase I'd be in luck!

I don't trust carbon break surfaces on wet roads, especially when needing to stop quickly. I hope we see a trend towards more race wheel options with aluminum brake tracks. I had Zipp Firecrests and went back to Hed Jets. The new Swiss Side Hadron looks interesting if you are looking for a relatively inexpensive set of race wheels along the lines of Flo.

Let me know how you find tire installation. I can install tires on my Zipp Firecrest and Hed Jets by hand. With the Flo 30s, I had to use a couple of tire levers and a hell of a lot of muscle of which I am in short supply. Yes sort if, I got the rims and hubs and sent them to wheelbuilder,

The hubs are ceramic so around 750, rims with shipping 190, spokes, nipples, tubeless rum tape and labor to build around 400.

When I got my Flo 30s, I ended up ruining 3 tubes and broke a tire lever trying to get a new GP4000s onto the rim. I got so frustrated at my lack of ability to install the tire that I swallowed my pride and took everything down to the LBS for a remedial lesson in tire/tube installation. The mechanic at the LBS even had a bit of a hard time himself but he *did* manage to install the tire with no levers and showed me a few tricks on how to install without ruining the tube or having to use levers. So it was embarrassing for me but at least now I am better skilled than I was at installing a new tire.

That is a tip that my LBS didn't teach me. Makes sense although I'm glad I learned to do it without using a dryer because I'm not sure with all the other crap I carry around on a ride that I have room for a dryer as well. But for a home-based install I can see how that might help.

Has anybody replaced the rim tape that came with the Flo 30s with something else, and if so, what? I have to go the LBS later today, so I think I will pick up some thin rim tape and give it a go. I wonder what width would work best?

Did you change the rim tape that came with the Flo 30s? I suppose Veloplugs would make things easier. The difficulty in installing tires on the 30s (I also use GP4000s) has meant that I have not used the wheels. I can get the tires on with a LOT of effort, however, I would not want to deal with that after flatting in the middle of nowhere.

I have been doing hours and hours of reading to help me decide on a wheel set to upgrade from the stock hoops on my 13 Trek 1.2. I had pretty much decided on the Flo 30s. Love the look and have heard nothing but good things about them. Work commuting, group rides and charity events (MS150, Pedal the Cause, etc) are the extent of my riding. I'm currently on the list to be notified when the next order happens (supposedly mid-July). As a 215 pound rider, I plan to get the 28 spoke rear. Does anyone think I should have any concerns at all? I gotta admit, I am a little nervous about flatting now, after reading how tough it is to change out tires. I plan to take wheels, tires, tubes and a cassette to my LBS and have them do everything at first. However, I guess I'll also add to that some Veloplugs. Does anyone see any issues a bigger rider like me may have with this setup?

You should be 100% fine with a 28 spoke rear.

I race on my FLO 30's. With my 24 spoke rear I had to open my rear brake more because of minor flexing when I race crits.

The Flo's are tough to change tires, but I can't say they are much worse than my old Mavics.

For the record there is no difference between an 11spd or 10spd build. Can I ask what frame you are riding? I know I'll sound like the guy trying to depend his wheels... but... often times it's the frame that's flexing. With a 2 cross build on both sides the standard FLO 30 isn't really a "soft" wheel. Sometimes customer upgrade to the 28 spoke build and find the "flex" worse. What really is happening, is the stiffer wheel is causing the frame to flex more.

I just troubleshot a "flexy" rear wheel for a customer who had an S5 frame. Anyway, after several discussions, I was able to see his bike and found out that his rear brake was really loose. The "flexing" wasn't flexing at all, his brake was simply wiggling around. And he's a big strong rider on a 24 spoke build.

Ahh, that makes sense. Thanks for the reply! It didn't make sense to me that a 2 cross build would be flexy either. I haven't had any problems since I adjusted my rear brake. Getting a LOT of q's from fellow roadies on these wheels. they are the best bang for the buck on the market!

Would the same apply to the Flo 90 ? I have the Clydesdale version and if there would be one thing i don't like about the wheel it would be the flex. My training wheels are 28 spoke DT swiss wheels built by Wheelbuilder and are extremely stiff and cause little to no flex at all in my P2. If i try to squeeze the spokes i feel much more tension in my DT Swiss wheels vs my Flo 90. Also if i grab the rim and try to pull it to the frame, it bends a lot more with less force.

Yes the same would apply on the 90. What is the width of the brake track on the DT Swiss wheel? Are the brakes set up the exact same on the DT Swiss wheel vs. your FLO 90? How is the DT Swiss wheel built... spokes, lacing pattern, tensions?

I'm asking all of those questions because there are a lot of variables. My previous post wasn't to suggest that FLO wheels are the stiffest in the world, but rather to shed some light on the other potential side of the equation. Your DT Swiss wheel could be stiffer depending on how it's built. Or it could actually be softer causing your frame to deflect less. Pulling the rim to the frame doesn't mean the wheel is moving... it could mean the frame is bending.

Make sense?

Yes, that makes great sense. I've got two sets of wheels to compare to, one is using a Velocity Deep V rim and the other using a DT Swiss R585 rim. Spokes are 2 x crossed on both drive and non-drive side. The rim is obviously narrower (around 19mm i think) but I have had to dramatically increase the gap between brake pads and rims with the Flo. I could run on the tightest gap with the Wheelbuilder wheels (around 1mm on either side), whereas now I need a 3-4mm gap on either side or otherwise the rim hits the brake.

I disagree with the statement about pulling the wheel towards the frame doesn't mean the wheel is moving - that would be true if the force at which you pull the wheel would be unknown. What I know now is that pulling the DT Swiss wheel towards the frame requires a lot of force to result in minimal rim displacement (vs the frame as reference) whereas for the FLO wheel, it only takes little force to see a lot of displacement.

I understand what you are saying about "pulling the rim". I didn't know you had a known force. From what you are telling me, wheelbuilder had put together a build that is a little stiffer than our build.

For reference... I was comparing my FLO30 to a 24 spoke 2 cross Kinlin XC279 built by Hoops Wheels. I'll gladly trade a minor amount of stiffness or aerodynamics...

You need to be a man about mounting those tires. It does take a little more effort to get a gp4000 on than some wheelsets, but not much.

The only real answer is to push harder. Once you get the tires on the first time and run them in remounting won't be as difficult.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but for the first install (hoping they stretch after that), you can try a Kool-Stop Tire Bead Jack.

I have Flo 30s and use GP4000s. Maybe a little bit tougher, but have had no problem. Have changed tubes several times (from butyl for training and latex for racing)... and no issue. No flats at all.

Also, I rode them in a hellacious storm at Norseman (crazy rain and hail)...where I was shooting down switchbacks and riding brakes hard...and my brake track is still black. Too bad yours came off...but does it really matter?

I would say give them a chance.

With respect to the tires, the first installation can often be a little more challenging. Tires have a tolerance, as do wheels. I've had the same make and model tire go on easily with my bare hands, and the next one require tire levers. However, once on, the tires tend to stretch out.

Can I ask how you are installing the tire? Let me explain. When feeding on the last side of the tire, you eventually get to the point where your hands can no longer force the tire over the rim. At that point I'm assuming you are using a tire lever? If so, are you placing the tire lever in the middle of the excess tire OR are you working from one side towards the middle? If you are beginning in the middle of the excess tire, you'll have a terribly hard time.

You also mentioned that your rim tape is coming apart. It sounds like you may have snagged it on something. If you'd like, I can send you a new piece. Just message me your contact info and I'll get you a new piece in the mail.

Take care,

Don't know if this has been mentioned before, but an old cyclist's trick for tight tire installations is to throw them in the dryer for 15-20 min to get them warm, flexy and pliable.

Alternatively, put them outside against a south facing wall for a while [if you're fortunate enough to still have hot weather at this time of year].

I kind of agree with this. I have another brand of 60mm wheels with the 4000s on them. I had to push so damn hard with my thumbs to get those things on that I heard the carbon crack on the other side where my fingers were holding the wheel. I fear the day where I have to change a tube on the side of the road!

Forget the tire iron, forget the swearing... when you get down to the last bit of tire bead to push over with your palms, wet the rim and the tire with a small amount of water (take a sip from your water bottle and spit it on the bead and rim). Bam! The thing slips over as if the tire diameter had expanded by a couple of centimeters.

First install of Conti's is only slightly challenging, after that it slides on like butter when using water as the lubricant. (It's the same reason that your wetsuit slides off easily when taking it off within 30 seconds of exiting the water. If you wait until the suit drys at all it gets sticky and difficult.)

So I guess the guys at my bike shop aren't men? It recently took two of them using a Kool Stop tire jack to get a new tire on one of my Flo 30s, and even then they struggled like crazy. These are very experienced mechanics. I'm thinking of selling my wheels because I can risk this happening in a race. Every individual tire (not just make and model) is different, but in my experience they all range from merely hard to practically impossible.

Tires stretch out over time and should be easier to remount after you have ridden on the tire a bit. Only exception to that is tubeless tires that have a carbon bead.

I found it difficult to mount tires on those wheels, even tires that had been previously mounted.

Could also be the plastic rim strip instead of real rim tape taking up too much space in the tire well.

I picked up some Flo 30s. Seem well built and and I'm pleased with the quality. However, putting on fairly used GP4000s tires might have been the toughest thing I've ever encountered. I got it done, but not after nearly breaking two pedro levers. I talc'd the tires and rim to help slide them on, but that did not help at all. I don't think the rim tape has anything to do with it. I'm sure the rim width is some of it, but I also think the really sharp edge of the rim is also a variable. Compared to any other wheel I've ever seen, yours seems too sharp/squared at the edge and literally can start to saw parts of the bead off as your work the last 3-6 inches. Most wheels I have are rounded a bit on the edge.

Again nice wheels and well built, but I'm calling my wife for SAG if I ever flat on them.

Anyone know what tire brands are easier to install?

When you have leftover tire that needs to be "levered" onto the rim, are you placing the tire lever in the middle of section of tire that is not on, OR are you working from an edge and gradually working it on the rim as you move to the other side?

btw, for me getting the tire off is a whole other monster to tackle. again, hopefully it's just me and no one else.

anyway, i purchased the F60 recently and watched the video so im giving it one more shot after i decide whether to get a PT PM.

From each edge. Your wheel has two "last parts" in my opinion. The first "last part" is around 6-7 inches left. You can just slightly get the lever under the far sides. After another inch or two is pushed over then the second "last part" is left. It's about 3 inches with the tire completely flush against rim with tons of pressure on it. No way a lever is getting under it so I just used the edge of the lever to push the sides of the bead up and over the wheel. With some real push you can get the rest to flip over.

Funny, when I removed some Michelin PR3's (25mm), I got so frustrated battling my levers - broke one, mangled another w/ a steel core - that I actually used a razor blade to get the tire off. I've done that before with a tubular, but this was my first time with a clincher.

No issues with other Flo wheels.

Never had a 60, but no issues mounting tires on a Flo 90 or a disc.

I really think the issue may be the "tape" provided not letting the tire sit down in the well when you install it.

I think your method is causing the problem. Try this...

When there is 6-7 inches left, put the lever under the "last part" in the center. Once the tire lever is under the tire and over the rim (make sure you haven't pinched your tube), slide it to one of the edges. Lift the lever up to move that edge on but do NOT remove the tire lever. You shouldn't have two "last parts". If you keep the lever under the tire, you should be able to "walk" the tire on pretty easily.

Watch this video from 4:08 on. I have about 6-7 inches of "last part" on a FLO 30 with GP4000s tires and use the method I describe above. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_Cp0TRWnx4

I've got two Flo 30's with GP4000's. I had to keep centering the bead on the rim as I put the tire on to relieve some stress in the bead. Then use the lever towards one side or the other - not in the middle.

I'm in between picking up just another bontrager race tlr/tlr lite rear wheel or get a set of flo 30s. Those of you that have had the flos for a while now, how have they been holding up?

So I got my set of flo 30s last week and rode them over the weekend. I'm getting a pulsing feeling when I brake. It's not a consistent braking force as I felt like I was being jerked forward and back. I adjusted my brakes beforehand and angled the pads to be parallel with the angled brake track. I'm running Shimano pads on a speed concept 9 series.

Anyone notice this on their wheels?
