Just heard from 2 people, one an ST'er, one not - they're OK. It was scary, and plenty of people hurt, wide range of injuries.

Most everyone's been moved to Boston Commons.

Prayers for them all.

No way it was an accident. Multiple explosions and i read they found another device at the mandarin hotel. Seems to be timed to promote maximum casualties... Heard on the radio that a baseball game just got out.

My wife ran the last 2 years, she decided not to run this year. Her family is related to the owner of Marathon sports where the explosion occurred, and her parents and my 2 kids (5 and 8) would usually watch the finish from the storefront while I leapfrogged along the course on my bike. I'm queasy just thinking about it...they'd have been right there.

There is no indication whatsoever at this point who is responsible.

But two explosions happened 20 seconds apart at the finish line. A 3rd device was found undetonated, and set off in a controlled explosion by the bomb team. So, it seems unquestionable that this was indeed a deliberate attack.

Local Boston station reporting FEMA director just said he does not know the cause of the explosions. There have been controlled explosions of other packages, but given the fact that people are panicking and probably dropping backpacks right and left, that isn't surprising. Washington DC has now gone on heighten alert.

Reporting of a 3rd device that was detonated in a controlled device. 2 dead/23 injured. One explosion was right at the finish at around 4:09 race time and the other looked to be 4-6 blocks up the road. Boston news types on the scene said that it happened outside in trash cans.

Feds are saying its clear its a bomb--multiple portable devices--not car bombs

Many "walking wounded" being reported now...

Horrible....

I'm looking down on the area of Huntington and Belvidere (just east of Mass ave) from my hotel room. They're pushing people out of the area and there's suddenly a huge police presence. They're planning a press conf at the Westin, just up the street, but they're definitely driving people west of this area. I'd advise staying clear of this area.

No doubt....but it is news and out there. People can use their best judgement re: the value. NYP is reporting 12 dead and 50 injured. Most other outlets are reporting 2 dead and 23 injured, but CNN just said the death toll is "rising" but have not put out a new number.

Also keep in mind now there are runners that can't get their checked bags, which probably had their cell phones. People must be going insane. I know I have received 29 phone calls and no idea how many texts since the bombs went off.

Marathon/Ironman finishing areas are about to change forever.

First of all, my thoughts/prayer to all the injuried and their families. Also to Dave McGillivray and his team at DMSE, who put the race on for the BAA. The job of race direction of events this scale, and maybe even smaller just changed forever. It's terrible.

I naively thought that our endurance sports events were safe or immune to this sort of thing. The innocence is gone now.

A sad day.

I know probably 50 people there to either race or spectate. Thankfully most have checked in ok. And we are really thankful one friend who was there to run got sick so my friend he was staying with, who lives at mile 25, didn't go to their usual spot to spectate - right where the explosions occurred.

Good god, how will they get in contact with their families? This is horrible. I understand the reason, but what a way to add more stress to this situation.

From their Facebook feed:

The Boston Marathon
Streets within the Back Bay, including those of our post-race area remain under lock down. If you're a runner in today's race unable to retrieve your bag from a baggage bus in Back Bay, you will not be able to retrieve your bag today. It will remain in our secure possession and we will provide you more information as it becomes available.

They just finished the press conference.

2 bombs (the ones we know about)
1 controlled explosion
1 explosion/fire at JFK library that they are treating as related
They are treating all bags left on course as suspicious.
If you have any information that could lead to an arrest, you're supposed to call 1-800-494-TIPS (the crimestoppers line)
The bruins game has been cancelled
They are advising people in the city to avoid large crowds and to stay in your hotel room.
They explicitly didn't give an updated casulty count.
They are looking for a truck, but don't have a specific make/model.
They didn't have any forewarnings in the weeks leading up to the event.

I don't think they mentioned whether a suspect was in custody or not.
TSN just said that the "suspect in custody" story was not very credible, but hasn't been disproven.

it seems to me that this happened between 4:45 and 4:50 into the race, yes? and, i haven't heard any reports that anyone participating in the race was injured, rather that spectators, or pedestrians, proximate to the bombs were the victims. if anyone has heard any different, please ping me via email, slowman@ the domain you'd expect.

Pics/vid from the blast show 4:09 on the race clock. Probably still a few thousand people on the course, and the finish line had a lot of people crossing during the blast. At least a couple of those runners looked like that had, at the least, minor injuries.

I was at a bar in Newton post race and it came across the news at exactly 3pm Boston time. So probably happened 5 or 10 minutes before that.

So 4:15 into the race for the wave 2 starters and a little under 4 hours into the race for the wave 3 starters.

I'd say it was almost right at 2:50pm, local time. I looked at my watch a minute or so before it happened. I believe the clock (that everyone is wondering about) was adjusted to the 10:40 wave start. If you went out at 10:40, then you were roughly 4:09-4:10 into the race.

CNN has officially called in terrorist attack but it is unlikely that it was an international or domestic origination Odds are they are an individual or a small group of people.

Wife and kids were watching about 500 m down from the finish line, left to go back to the hotel about 20-30 minutes before it happened. So thankful they were safe inside.

I think I was in the hotel shower at the time, and the since that time it has been the most surreal day. Don't have the words to express my thoughts about all of this.

Tragic for everyone affected, my heart goes out to them.

have seen logical hypotheses on twitter re: small right-wing extremist (guns, taxes, etc.) and also whatever-wing extremists the IRA are (local court case involving the IRA that was decided today).

at any rate, first, second, 5th, even 10th reports are wrong. let's not go all apeshit on Richard Jewell just yet.

Yeah if they really do have someone detained at one of the hospitals they are probably not going to confirm it to the public to try to prevent attempts at vigilante justice.

Hacker group anonymous has been tweeting a blurry image of a man on the rooftops in the area. And it is a terrorist attack, it's an attack that has promoted fear and terror.

I don't think it's a large group either. Sad to say, a large, "practiced" terrorist group would have caused much much more death and destruction. For where they were placed, there was actually not that much damage compared to what could have been. (And I in no way mean to demean, make light or otherwise lessen the tragedy. I am just very grateful that it was not ten times worse than it is.)

Imagine if they had been underneath the viewing stands instead of what appears to be doorways across the street behind the spectators.

no doubt this is terrorism... just please don't jump to capital-T Terrorism Islamaphobia-style just yet.

that guy being arrested could be anyone. Drunk who wouldn't cooperate. Mentally ill guy who wouldn't coooperate and clear the area. Distraught man looking for loved ones not cooperating. Law and order is simple in this respect... avoid big problems by handling small ones soonest and publicly.

yes, small group or individual. I hate to say it, but those bombs, while devastating, were small thankfully. Much of the blast force looked to be directed upwards (trash can) and from the looks of it only the people standing right on top of it were severely injured.

I've seen pictures similar to the ones online today from another place and time and I too am thankful that this it isn't 10x worse.

Ultimately, so many people rushed to the sound of the guns so to speak to help and I can't help but hope that people were saved by that selflessness.

not sure that would have mattered. Sidewalks were crammed, and the road could have been filled with runners but they would not have been hurt. Unfortunately the bystanders absorbed the brunt of the blast. Probably a weak bomb relatively, probably mostly directed upward relatively.

watch the finish line video. Many people standing in the road facing the bomb directly don't even flinch.

I was just about to enter the green line Park T-Station when informed the entire green line was shut down. Started to walk the 20K or so back to Riverside Station where the car was parked and met up with 3 others in the same boat. When we got to Kenmore we started hitchhiking and got picked up by 3 sets of good samaritans who got us back.

Prayers to those affected by the bombings and to all of their loved ones.

Such a shame that such a spectacular event in such a fabulous City is so negatively affected. I'll definitely be back next year.

I live just outside of Boston. Boston isn't exactly known as the friendliest town in America. But this one day, the city, and the whole state are out there, on the same page, cheering on the runners.

This race is as much, if not more, about the people out on the sides of the roads than the people running down them.

This just feels so close to home, not just our city, but our day. Any other day would have been equally as tragic. But on this day people are standing on the side of the roads so us idiots have some support while we engage in this ridiculous activity. Now some of those people are dead or seriously injured.

By all accounts the BAA handled last year's extreme conditions well and has done a good job in response to this so far. I trust they'll figure out a way to honor and address what happened and we'll be back out there next year.

Thoughts go out to anyone affected by this. I work in the city and will be there tomorrow, if anyone is stuck in the city because of cancelled flights, lunch is on me tomorrow at the Chipotle on Washington St., PM me if you're around and want to meet.

There would have been more people on the sidewalk side. On the library side, you needed credentials to get into the stands. The stands started emptying at 12:30 after the trophies were handed out.

It would have been much worse a couple hours earlier

Agree, this is the one day that the city truly does come together. It was unnerving leaving the office tonight and hearing sirens everywhere, as well as seeing two State Police troopers with M-16s at the garage where I park as the hotel connected to it was going into lockdown mode.

Mad Jee,

The Boston Marathon for the longest time was the most popular and best known Marathon in North America and perhaps the world - outside of the Olympic Games Marathon. In many ways, every other popular running race in North America that has sprung up in the last 30 odd years has tried to " be the Boston Marathon" - with that same, shut-everything-down-for-the-day attitude that the people of Boston have for this great race. This has caught on in other places, but in many other places not so much. Nevertheless, the model has always been, Boston!

advice from reddit if you were in Boston:

Reposting /u/IBuildDrones advice to those who were present so it can gain more awareness. All credit goes to him. If you see him repost his advice in this thread please upvote his.
"For those of you who were there.
Please take a moment away from the internet, away from the trolls and away from knee jerk reactions. Try not to contaminate your memories of the incident, with uninformed views of the event.
Try to write down everything that happened today, from the moment you woke up, to now - starting at the beginning of your day will help to organize the events of the day, and no detail is too small.
Once you have your day written down, do not change any of it. Add to it if you like, but don't change anything. (Edit - Multiple versions of events are better than one mistaken version. If numerous people come forward with the same version of events, although it might not feel right to you at the time, that perspective/view of the incident may actually be the accurate version. You have been shocked, and your brain will not operate as it normally does; your memories can be distorted and jumbled, it's normal, and it's a coping mechanism.)
Try to include all of your senses when you write down your day. Smells are very important in a situation like this, they tell the FBI a lot, even though you may feel odd about communicating smells associated to events. All the things you heard, all the things you felt. All of what you experienced is important, and some of it will come to you in dreams over the next few days, weeks, months, and years.
Please backup and include every image you have taken in and around Boston over the last few days, and obviously of today. The offending party(ies) may be in one of your images. Offer these images to the FBI with your version of events. Please do not leave out any of the images.
Then, offer your views of the events to your local FBI office. There will be an anti-terrorist section, and the operator will put you through.
I hope you are well, and I hope you come through this ok.
Edit: for those of you worried about friends and family, and frantic because you can't get a hold of them via their cell phone; the cell phone networks may still be down, which is standard operating procedure during and after a terrorist attack - for obvious reasons.
Edit 2: If you have a dash cam in your car (I use them in all of my vehicles), don't forget to backup the feed and give it to the FBI also. In a situation like this, there is never too much information.

From Patton Oswalt....

Boston. Fucking horrible.

I remember, when 9/11 went down, my reaction was, "Well, I've had it with humanity."

But I was wrong. I don't know what's going to be revealed to be behind all of this mayhem. One human insect or a poisonous mass of broken sociopaths.

But here's what I DO know. If it's one person or a HUNDRED people, that number is not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a percent of the population on this planet. You watch the videos of the carnage and there are people running TOWARDS the destruction to help out. (Thanks FAKE Gallery founder and owner Paul Kozlowski for pointing this out to me). This is a giant planet and we're lucky to live on it but there are prices and penalties incurred for the daily miracle of existence. One of them is, every once in awhile, the wiring of a tiny sliver of the species gets snarled and they're pointed towards darkness.

But the vast majority stands against that darkness and, like white blood cells attacking a virus, they dilute and weaken and eventually wash away the evil doers and, more importantly, the damage they wreak. This is beyond religion or creed or nation. We would not be here if humanity were inherently evil. We'd have eaten ourselves alive long ago.

So when you spot violence, or bigotry, or intolerance or fear or just garden-variety misogyny, hatred or ignorance, just look it in the eye and think, "The good outnumber you, and we always will."

Glad you are OK.

Turns out two of my sisters were at the finish line with their respective families, in the bleachers at street level right across from where the first one took place. My brother-in-law served in Iraq and Afghanistan and as soon as it went off, told them all to immediately start moving away from the area and into the Boston Public Library

Yea, that wasn't them in the video. The Hoyts were in all blue kit.

Thankfully I finished early and was able to make it out before it all happened. I was eating at the Globe about 45 minutes before then hopped on the train to catch my flight. Didn't know what happened until I got to the airport and got mass amounts of texts/tweets/fb posts seeing if I was ok. I guess my flight was one of the last to be able to leave because when I landed I heard they grounded all the flights out of Logan. I'm still in disbelief over what happened and the fact that I was just there. It's sickening and I hope they get this all figured out soon.

A little late to this but i wanted to add my 2c

The news of the Boston Marathon bombing makes me sick.

Many of these people, just like you and I, enjoy racing, health, and the sense of community that builds around these events. Many of them who were finishing around the 4 hour mark are weekend warriors and those doing it for the love/thrill of completing a marathon. They are every day people whom share a love of sport.....

I am entering exam period(University) and I cannot force myself to study. I have constant thoughts of the terror that these people must have gone through which could have been me, a friend, a family member....makes me sick to my stomach. These events are supposed to bond people together through the love of a sport!!!!!!

I feel like, though i dont know most of you, that we are all bonded together though our love of sport and competition.
Though we are all competitive and may not be friends come race day, we are one big endurance family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you as well as the civilians, Police, Firemen, Volunteers, and Medics who are doing an outstanding job.
You are the reason i still have faith in humanity.

To everyone --hug your loved ones a little longer tonight as we truly do not know what tomorrow will bring.

I wasn't implying that he was responsible in any way. I was just pointing out that CNN did have a report about him while others were saying that the story was completely made up. IMO, the perpetrator(s) are unlikely to be amongst the injured. This guy is probably given extra scrutiny, probably erroneously, because of his nationality. That's all.

My wife and I had just reunited at our hotel a block from the finish after setting a PR at her very first Boston (3:29:33) when we heard and felt the blasts. Needless to say its put a different twist on what should have been a celebratory evening.

I spent most of the day out at the Riverside station at mile 17 and had just made it to the corner of Boylston to see he go by and was able to snap a pic. Very scary to see that picture of her an 1/8th of mile and only 40 minutes away from what happened.

I lived 2 years in Boston while my wife was getting her masters at BU. She's an athletic trainer and was a volunteer at the medical tent in 2010. That year, I watched from right in front of Marathon sports...

She considered volunteering again this year now that we're in NY, but thankfully I guess her work schedule prevented it. We had many friends running or volunteering. All are safe. Dont know if any of our folks were spectating, as my old employer basically everyone took off for the Sox game then went down boyleston for drinks and to watch the race.

I don't have time to read all of the posts on here, so sorry if any of this is redundant... but for what it's worth all of the BlackDuck Racing athletes who ran Boston are OK.

We had four team-members running, three finished about an hour before the incidents and one had to abandoned at mile 8 for back spasms. We were all at our pre-planned meeting place and were talking about our runs when we heard the explosions. We were far enough away to not "feel" anything. We decided to stay together and calmly leave the area. It took us over two hours to travel (drive) to where we are staying exactly 8 miles away.

We are leaving Boston this morning, heading out to Pennsylvania. If we can help anyone, please PM or email me.

Our thoughts are with all of those hurt and effected by this attack. I know for sure, we are ALL ready to come back "home" to Boston next year.

I love going for a run.

While not nearly as fleet of foot as I used to be, there are few things that allow me to free myself quite like a little jog. 15 pounds ago, I ran Boston. It had been a goal since my first race at age 10.

On that Nor’easter day in 07, had one of the best runs of my life. Took her out slowly like you're supposed to, made easy work of the Hills, and basically floated into town. Now, I’m not a “crowd high-fiver” kind of race runner... but that day couldn’t help myself. Probably slapped hands with every Sully and Murph lining the road. Best high-five was with my wife, who had finagled herself close to the finish.

The same place one of the bombs went off.

The good people of earth have no bigger fan than me. But, man, I am getting sick and tired of the assholes in this world.

What an awful way to end a beautiful day. My wife (Shanley) was gathering her things after the finish when the first explosion happened...she looked up and saw smoke. Then the 2nd bomb went off. I was in the family waiting area with my 2 kids...right where the athlete's come out at the end of the chute looking for her. It was very loud...but we didn't know what happened. After the 2nd explosion I started thinking the worst and things started getting a bit chaotic...but of course my cell phone died 15' before hand. Thank GOD my kids didn't see anything. A friend was stopped a half a mile or so from the finish very soon after it happened. It was all very surreal.

The response by Boston's Police/Fire/Rescue services was amazing. My heart goes out to all the families/friends who have been effected by this horrible and senseless act.

Hello everyone
I had an entry to London for this coming Sunday. I had cancelled it because I hadn't been able to train properly, but after seeing the news from Boston I called the London Marathon organisers and they have kindly allowed me to uncancel (or whatever the right word is) my entry. This is so that I can run on Sunday and try to get some sponsorship to raise money to help out the victims and their families - there are a lot of people who are going to need long-term rehabilitation, alterations to their homes and probably long-term care. All of that costs a lot of money and the only thing I can really do to help from this side of the pond is extract money from friends and family and send it over. The only problem is that I haven't yet found a suitable fund to identify, probably because it's only 24 hours after the event. Time is short though and something like that is likely to get less coverage in the UK than in the USA, and there is the added problem of fake sites that are being reported (!). I would hope that a genuine victim support fund will appear in the next day or so - if anyone here is involved with one or can point me to one that we can be sure is real I'd be very grateful for a pointer either here or by PM.

Thanks

Rob

This was and still feels like home to us. We watched the past five marathons from the starbucks below our home, and I still cant imagine this utterly senseless evil happening to innocent people. My heart goes out to those affected.

This - we are already working on a fundraiser at my office (about 600 employees). We generally have a pretty strict dress code, even on casual Friday. No denim and no running shoes/sneakers, but we are seeking permission from our CEO to sell tickets for $5 that would allow our employees to wear running shoes one Friday with proceeds going to benefit a worthy cause. Please, PLEASE post if you guys see anything.

Maybe even another thread we can get stickeyed so it doesn't get lost in the clutter.

Heard this today from the other side of the globe. From what I've heard about the devices I guess those lower to the ground stood less chance. Poor young boy. Reports were that he'd just hugged his dad who'd finished but that could be untrue given it sounds like a finisher's chute may make that impossible. That dad must be going through hell. His whole family out supporting him, cheering for him and they bore the full brunt of it.

I guess most people on ST can relate to our loved ones out supporting us and how horrible it would be for something like this to happen to them. He wasn't much older than my son. I thought about this on the ride home having worked late. Made sure I gave both a kiss in bed as they slept.

Thoughts are with everyone who has been affected in any way by these events. I wish you well.

Thanks

Rob

That, my man, is an awesome gesture. Best of luck with the race.

From a Londoner transplanted to Boston.

I'd really appreciate it if anyone found and posted a LEGITIMATE link to a Boston Marathon Explosion Relief Fund. Google has nothing, even though a New England Patriots player has agreed to donate proceeds to such a fund.

Was not planning on going back again next year before I woke up this morning and realized how much I want to go back and support that great race and the great communities we run through. Still in shock and sickened thinking I was eating post race near the finish 45 minutes before it happened. Thankfully I was at the airport when it i heard about it.

I wasn't able to sleep last night and am having a hard time keeping it together today. This is just so horrible I can't quite wrap my brain around it.

A marathon. At the finish line where people are happy, cheering and celebrating.

I haven't reached anger but I'm sure it will come.

Thankfully no one I know was directly affected.

Below is a part of an e-mail I sent out to some friends yesterday :

I am completely devastated with the bombing at The Boston Marathon yesterday. In all the countless races I have done those were always my solace away from the “real world”. No worries, no concerns, away from cellphones, e-mails, etc where it is just *you* out on a race course alone with your thoughts, achieving whatever the goal was that was set. Now it is just one more thing that will no longer be innocent.

I grew up in NH and consider Boston my sports home. I'm loyal to the Red Sox and Patriots and have been for 30 years. Many of my college friends still live in that area.

I'm in the Seattle area now and people at work aren't even really talking about it. My running friends on Facebook are but no one here in the office gets it.

Go downstairs. It will only help.

from an aid station volunteer,

#50 ::: jnh : April 16, 2013, 12:46 PM:

ICS is up and active for the Marathon at a regional or state level out of the state EOC in Framingham in all the 10 or so years I've been involved. I believe that the Federal EOC is also activated for the event, and one of the federal logistics support teams is based in Mass, and can activate on very short notice (everyone in that team holds a Class A Commercial Drivers License (including the receptionist).
The Marathon is a pre-declared Mass Casualty Incident, and there were already special medical protocols in place just for the normal level of ill and injured runners. This may have helped. What certainly helped was the vast number of trained medical responders, vetted and credentialed for the event, that were just around the corner. The finish line medical tents are run by Boston EMS. Boston EMS has large numbers of bicycle Paramedics working the race. Ambulances are pre-spotted at many of the medical tents, especially in the last third or so of the race. Course medical is run from a central offsite location and is coordinated between MEMA (Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency), the Red Cross, the ambulance companies, race management, and other players. There is a Ham radio net with full net control providing communications from every medical tent and walking Red Cross team to coordinate response.
Special Boston or State police teams are already in place (there are a couple of black vans that drive just in front of the leaders of at least two of the waves of runners (women's elite and men's elite)) loaded with special ops folk with the rear van doors open, and at least the last row of seating facing backwards -- the same as in previous years.
The course is lined with Police and National Guard for crowd control and incident response.
Normally, the Marathon is considered to be a massive live drill with real world problems popping up. I wish it had stayed that way.
**

I had no idea special ops was already taking guard positions on the race..
Remember the way the terrorists win is to make us fearful. don't stop running..

I'm right there with ya. I just can't fathom what these people are going through right now. I keep imagining myself approaching a finish line looking for my family as they cheer for me and having an explosion take place right on top of them. You never would think that such an act of cowardly violence would take place in such a setting... I guess if it happens in elementary schools it can happen anywhere. It really tears me up thinking about it. Now every race I take part in I feel like there will always be that worry or concern that something is going to happen. I've already told my wife to not stand with our twins near large crowds anymore. It's sad but I feel its now a necessity.

And here we go.

Your event will NOT be a copycat target.

You are literally many thousands of times more likely to die by your own hand in a car crash on the way to the race next week, then be a target. You are literally more likely to WIN LOTTERY then be a terrorist target. What's the matter with you?

this has hit me So Fucking Hard I can't tell you. Not nearly as hard as 9-11 - go figure. On 9-11 I was HUGELY pregnant with #3 and keeping #1 and #2 away from all media so DH and his friend could watch. I was well insulated. Not this time. Kids still insulated (well #3 and #4) but naturally so. I'm not. I've given up my ride today but I found an old yellow/golden shirt and some blue shorts and will head out into the heat and run now. The quote from reddit linked earlier in the thread was from one volunteer who said most left, but she stayed and helped bring the police water, and then moved the tables out of the way for the ambulance. After that they had her and the others who helped clear the area.

She then went out looking to help lost runners etc.

In that case I think we are all people. Do what you can for others.

To the disparaging comment about why take precautions..."Because if I do believe my race may have the slightest chance of a being a target, and I don't take common sense precautions, and something does happen....I totally deserved to have my a$$ sued, and I deserve to live with the guilt for the rest of my life.

My responsibility as a race director is to provide the best race experience possible and protect my athletes as best I can from any known or obvious threat (i.e. traffic, dehydration etc.). The thought that we might be a target had occured to our permitting police force, and the Navy/military reps before I had even said word one.

Obviously the Boston marathon had thought about it themselves, their emergency plan was in place in a matter of minutes.

http://26426foundation.com/ (there are portions of the website still being built....they have bigger fish in the pan...search for it on facebook too 26.4.26)

Group was started here in Nashville as a response to the Newtown tragedy, they've quickly mobilized with fundraising for Boston as well. We have the Country Music Marathon here on the 27th & many will be running with our "angels" to support the Boston victims.

You can run with an angel anywhere, you can donate online.

The organizers stay directly involved to ensure that the funds go to the families without any questions or concerns from outside entities. A check was hand-delivered to Newtown after the tragedy. Robbie was in Newtown last weekend to help organize and support another event with them to help school kids & everyone continue to get active & continue to remember & heal.

I'm not directly involved with it but a huge supporter. Too often our fundraising efforts don't go directly to the victims or don't really help the greater good recover & rebuild.

We (runners, athletes, humans) are family. We are Nashville. We are Everywhere & Everyone. We are running for others.

I'm alright, didn't find the counselor, but bumped into a coworker in the stairwell who listened to me talk for 10 or 15 minutes.

I just feel so much guilt, running is already a bit of a selfish hobby, and now people out there to support us get killed and injured while out there cheering us on?

My wife and I live on Cohasset and are organizing one of the Run For Boston events tomorrow. We'll be at Sandy Beach in Cohasset at 6:30pm for about a 3.5 mile loop for anyone interested.

I'm working from home tomorrow and am on the road Thursday, glad to have two days out of the city. Leaving work today a big area near Faneuil Hall was closed off and sirens were flying around everywhere. That was too much for me, my nerves were just fried. Got on the boat home and we had 3 or 4 armed Coasties on board and a police escort all the way back to Hingham.

But - photos showing a bag at the bomb site:

The photo is blurred due to the graphic nature, but still unsettling and you can tell what's going on (don't look if you're not ready/etc).

this has been discussed pretty well at reddit and the speculation is that the blast from a bag left at that location doesn't support the damage, IIRC.

Ha. Based on the response we got, we hit the $1000 donation mark within about 30 minutes of posting this on Facebook. I think we'll have 1000+ people out there, so 1-2 laps is plenty.

I just got home from the airport after a long. long day of travel. Did a lot of thinking on my way home and will definitely be there next year again to run this race.

At first I admit I was pissed off when I saw people wearing their medals after the race at dinner, but now I know that we can not be intimidated or pushed around by such a cowardly act.

My wife, mother and 8 year old son were camped out about 20 yards (we figure) from where the second blast went off. They got there about 9:00 am and left about 1:00 when they saw me pass by...I feel fortunate that I get to see my 8 year old son tonight.

I will be back and running for little Martin...sad..sad day....

We too just got home to SoCal tonight on Jet Blue flight with probably 30 marathon runners all sharing their stories and feelings about what happened. It was very odd walking around town this morning and getting lunch. I will say though...the people of Boston have been AWESOME. We had several locals approach us and strike up conversation asking how we were doing. It's quite clear that Bostonians have great pride in this race, and it was a fantastic feeling to be around that under those circumstances.

I didn't qualify for this race (my wife was racing) but this event has convinced me that I just HAVE to qualify for next year so my wife and I can both run as a big FU to whoever did this.

Watching the newscast yesterday and this morning, I'm angry that some on-air and on-radio psychology "experts" are using the term "lone wolf" to describe an individual who might perpetrate such an act as Boston. I'm angry because of the word "wolf". I'd rather they used a more correct and psychologically descriptive term, like "lone f&@king COWARD"!

I was working towards a BQ last year when I hurt my back, so now I'm fully vested in going for a BQ now.

Questions -
1) Why is it taking so long to come out with any information about who and why?
2) What happens to the runners that didn't get to finish? Still finishers and awarded jackets/medals/etc? I know it the grand scheme it might not be a big deal, but to some, its a VERY big deal.
3) Anyone AFFECTED by the acts on Monday is a victim, so for the runners/spectators/everyday joe that has an extreme emotion, it is warranted and you have the absolut right to voice it. Don't start turning on each other for voicing such opinions and emotions.
4) Did anyone read about Joe Andruzzi? Damn, THERE is a tough guy!
5) How will this change future high participant/spectator endurance races (Marathons/Tour De France/Ironmans)?

Glad you're ok.

What a day. We left 15 minutes before the bombings. Our hotel was not far from the finish, so I was in the shower when it happened. Wife was yelling for me to come look on the TV. After that, the city went into lock-down mode and we pretty much had to stay in the hotel...We hung out in the lobby with the other marathoners (and their families) talking about what had happened. We also saw the hospital (directly across the street) go into lock-down mode and start to get very, very busy.

Sad, sad day.

1. Because it is important to be thorough and correct. Remember Richard Jewell?
2. I saw a lot of them claiming bags and medals on Tuesday. Yes, they all received medals.
3. The number of Bostonians that offered to buy us a mean, a drink, or give us a place to stay was overwhelming. Same thing for the incredible job done by police, EMS, National Guard, etc. one of the most incredible things I saw was a guy in full military gear and pack running the marathon, clearly exhausted, but then dropping his pack and running towards the explosions. We ARE the good guys.
5. Life goes on. The goal of terrorism is to make people afraid. Be vigilant, but don't be afraid. Keep on spectating, participating, whatever you would do normally.

Enough people have spoken here on what happened and their thoughts and I mine are very similiar. I was very very fortunate enough to be that close and yet high tail it to the airport quickly after knowing I would be safer there, through security just in case. A crazy day for sure. Run For Boston 4/17
On Wednesday, April 17th, runners, non-runners, and people who believe in hope and peace will run together as a sign of solidarity for the people and runners of Boston.

The idea is simple. Anytime on Wednesday, April 17th:
1) Gather your friends
2) Pick a place
3) Wear blue or yellow
4) Take a picture with a "Run for Boston" sign and post here

Join in this simple gesture to show Boston that we are all standing with them.

Who else is organizing one of these? The idea seems to be picking up steam around the world (judging from their FB page). We will "Run For Boston" today at the Boise High track between noon and 1 for any Boiseans out there. Wear your Boston gear or blue and yellow.

Yesterday, I was so sad and depressed. I couldn't even run nor did I want to talk to anyone, but this message along with Dan Empfield and Andrew Messick's messages inspired me today. Today, I laced up and ran this morning around my neighborhood wearing my Boston shirt and hat:

I feel so much better. I was also sad yesterday, because I learned that my local running hero (95 years old) passed away last Friday, so both the Boston tragedy and this news had me deeply depressed. Along with running this morning, I dropped a condolence card off at my hero's house. Having something to do today has lifted my spirits.

Thank you ST for inspiring me to lace up today and move. I also wore my nice Boston shirt to work in the hope of inspiring others to run and to encourage others to not avoid the races or finish lines.

I think they have someone. They just evacuated the federal courthouse in Boston although it doesn't look like anything is actually going on there (searches, etc.) and there's heavy security including coast guard boats. I guess there are a ton of people that gathered there. I'm in Boston watching WHDH Channel 7, I'm sure they stream online for those out of the area.

I think there is a difference between having detained someone as a person of interest, versus actually making an arrest. They have to have probable cause to make an arrest. I was detained overnight once and stood in a lineup because I was wearing clothing that matched the rough description of someone who had committed a crime. It was interesting to stand there with 4 other guys, all wearing red t-shirts and blue jeans. 5 of us were detained, but only 1 was arrested.

Anyway, it seems that the media has a hard time with that distinction, especially when being first to the story is so important for ratings. I would rather have a reliable news source than a fast one, but I guess that's not cool nowadays.

I ended up doing a solo run on the 17th through a concrete jungle of traffic, concrete, people and buses out of my hotel room in downtown Taipei. I did not feel like running, but I did because I could also motivated by Messick's message. Suddenly I found a park amidst all the chaos. A loop of the park was barely 300m, but there were retired people relaxing and children playing. Doing exacly what those age groups should in peace without having their world explode in front of their face. Like the runners in Boston, I was engaging in my selfish act, and like the spectators in Boston, these spectators smiled and waved across language and cultural barriers. They probably found it amusing that some crazy guy was looping around their park in a tropical sauna, while they were sweating in the heat relaxing. It occurred to me that people really do appreciate that other humans are willing to push their bodies and brains. That is why so many people come out to cheer at Boston or your local marathon...or even a foreigner interfering with their spot of tranquility of their park, to engage in the basic act of running.

I did not have any blue and yellow, but I did have blue and yellow in my mind. No doubt all of us have finish countless runs visualizing the final half mile on Boyleston. Many streets or roads have momentarily turned into the Boston finish line on countless training runs. The terrorist violated every one of us far beyond Copley Square. Definitely good for each of us to take that back.

Randy, great turn out! Loved seeing all the local support and everyone in their Boston Marathon kits from years past to present.

Thanks again for putting this tribute together.

TBH, while I have not been able to get Boston out of my mind, I had Chris Gleason firmly fixed in there too and think of him and his family frequently.

Also this announced recently: http://onefundboston.org/

This charity's website was prominently displayed last night during the Boston Bruins NHL game.

I also did a run on the 17th for the victims... Wasn't aware of the "run for boston" day on wednesday or else I would've added it to that..

The amount of pride I had on the road tuesday was amazing... like nothing I've ever felt running..

I ran quite a bit of miles and am wondering if anyone knows how I could translate them to charity miles? I've never looked into this... but I'd like to help if I could in any way

It's hard to know what to say, after Monday.

People far more eloquent than I am have written far better accounts, of what happened and what the impact has been.

I was not really motivated to write anything down myself, until I saw a quote in another article on Boston from good friend Bob Babbitt. That got me going with what I hope is a slightly different take - http://stevefleck.blogspot.ca/...ill-not-stop-us.html

How awesome is that? Saw some of the video of the suspects leaving the scene. My emotion turned from sorry for the victims of this mess to anger.

though it is easy to let emotion get the best of us, we also have to be careful we don't catch innocent parties that had nothing to do with it.

I hope the FBI has some other evidence other than 2 random people who kind of look suspicious. Do they have pics of them later on without their backpacks?

The brother of one of the victims (the guy with his legs blown off that was shown on the news in a wheelchair) said his brother woke-up in the hospital and ID'd one of the bombers as putting the bomb down just before it blew up on him...so yeah I'd say that's NOT random.

Philadelphia loves Boston. Hundreds of runners went converged on City Hall and ran to the Constitution Center/Liberty Bell. The police blocked off the streets for us. So amazing.

Can we just get away from the ST argumentative mode at least on this thread for at least a few days. Of course there is not right city to "pick" on, but you get the point. He was trying to prop up the morale of the citizens of Boston. Let's just move on in a positive way now. Those bombers already hammered the city, lives of innocent people and took a piece of the soul of the endurance sports world. We don't need useless divisive debate to layer on top of this.

Look for Bill Rodgers at Boston next year!

Based on the Runner's World article that was posted on FB, it seems many former champions will be there in 2014

Amby Burfoot then contacted a large group of former champions, and got quick positive responses from everyone. Some said they would run next year, some said they would walk, some said they would cheer, some said they would support the marathon in spirit.

BAA just sent this, I think they did a pretty good job:

TO OUR RUNNERS:

As we watch the latest episode in this agonizing story surrounding Monday's cowardly attack in Boston, I want to let everyone who participated in this year's marathon know that we at the Boston Athletic Association stand with you.

We have been inspired by your bravery in the face of unspeakable cruelty, and we have been moved by your outpouring of support for our race officials, volunteers and our entire Boston Marathon family-a family of which you are now a lifetime member.

We will be forever moved by the strength of our runners. Runners who finished their race, only to then race to give blood to help save their fellow runners who had fallen. Runners who helped support those around them when they found themselves leaving the course and huddling in schools, churches and the homes of strangers who opened their doors.

Monday's tragic events affected us all. Those who were injured are in our thoughts and prayers. Yesterday, we prayed together. We prayed with President Obama, who told us.

Our prayers are with the injured-so many wounded, some gravely. From their beds, some are surely watching us gather here today. And if you are, know this: As you begin this long journey of recovery, your city is with you. Your commonwealth is with you. Your country is with you. We will all be with you as you learn to stand and walk and, yes, run again. Of that I have no doubt. You will run again. You will run again!

And we will run again. You are strong. Boston is strong. And You and Boston have made us enormously proud. The Boston Marathon is a deeply held tradition, an integral part of the fabric and history of our running community. We are committed to continuing that tradition with the running of the 118th Boston Marathon in 2014. We will all run again.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Tom Grilk, for the B.A.A.

P.S. Once the emergency situation in Boston is resolved, we will be sending out additional counseling information for anyone in need

P.S. Once the emergency situation in Boston is resolved, we will be sending out additional counseling information for anyone in need

......and exactly what will Boston do that would be so different than any other city?

I'm not trying to argue, but I thought about this today. Essentially, why do I think Boston is different? I'm not from Boston, I'm from the South. I don't recall ever being in Boston.

Two things came to mind. First, Boston plays an important role in the history of our country. That role involved telling an overwhelming power to get stuffed because they were sick of their shit. Second, to some extent, my image of a guy from Boston still retains a stereotype - Irish descent, big drinker, devoted to his neighborhood and tough as shit. That's all being very aware of how Boston really is now.

That said, I think it's understandable that people's reaction might involve some sense of "Don't Fuck with Boston." I don't think the nation would be saying that about my town, Portland, Miami, Minneapolis or plenty of other large cities. Maybe Philly, maybe Texas - but Boston is sort of different.

I don't know that they'll "do" anything differently, but that doesn't change my reaction.

Yes, great work by the authorities to get him, alive.

Now let's hope we can get some answers, and some closure for all those affected.

Don't forget the need to mention "Felix" at least once a day, if not several times a day

Looking at pictures of last night's celebration in Boston, and the tributes to all of those affected by the tragedy.

As a proud Canadian, I have to admit that nobody beats Americans for knowing how to overcome adversity and come together in difficult times.

You are amazing people!

I've been fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to directly witness the tsunami here in Thailand, the war in Syria and the tsunami in Japan and have been impressed by each of those countries ability to overcome adversity. I don't think it is at all limited to any country and is really more of a human spirit.

Then for once I'd like to see him NOT go with a hackneyed cliche of a speech, and speak from the heart. I'd get much more out of that than another glib, canned response churned out by the writers.

Exactly. My companies former owner (South African by birth, actually) was on the beach when the ocean started going out just before the tsunami in Thailand. He extended his vacation by two weeks to help with the initial recovery efforts. It's a human, tribal thing.

Much like the peaceful tribe that used to exist here on ST (And still does in small pockets).

Funny you should mention that ... The words "Peaceful Tribe" floated through my head just the other day

Just a note to say that I hope the 30 seconds silence from the London Marathon is being reported in Boston. I have never heard 37000 people being so quiet: they pulled all the choppers back and the whole race start just went absolutely silent, with the only sound being traffic noise from the roads a few hundred yards away. It was a true display of solidarity.

Not sure if has been mentioned yet, but watching the highlights of the Red Sox game yesterday (first home game since the tragedy)

The Hoyt's took part in the throwing out the first pitch ceremony before the game.
