Ha, There have been many times where I've started a winter run with a hat, yet end up looking like a well endowed skinny guy. I figured I just put a sock over and wrap, and I don't have to lose the hat during the run.

'Been there, my friend. What's more interesting is what happens when things thaw. Moving along then ..I just stuff an old facecloth down the front on those days I know I'm gonna be headed into a wind for long stretches.

Personally, I just use a foreskin; nature's heater. No problems.

Since those are usually hard to find, you can always try winter running briefs that have a windblock or extra protection. Many of the majors like Sugoi, Craft etc make them. Never tried them, but people tell me they work.

"Blue Tip"....absolutely awful. An extra layer has usually helped and try to run into the wind first, before you start sweating a lot.

30-45 sport undies + light Dickpants (spandex)
20-30 sport undies + med-heavy dickpants + shorts (depending on wind)
10-20 nike running undies (covers quads) + heavy dickpants + shorts
0-10 nike running undies + shorts + running "pants"

any cross country skier will tell you that you need a pair of polypropelen winter briefs (polypropelen with wind breaker nylon in front) -- also a piece of sheepskin or cashmere for those sub 0 (degrees F) days.

Anyone have any recommendations that aren't 40 bucks a pair for nut huggers? I went for a <32 run today with Nike compression shorts underwear underneath running shorts... got to experience a whole new different type of blue balls.

Definitely going to invest in some anterior insulation.

The ones that are like Basketball shorts? Yeah, I have a pair on right now. They are my PJ's when I travel. Guess what? None of my runshorts have liners in them. I run with trishorts under all my shorts. I even surf with them under my surftrunks.

You can cut the liners out of any pair of De Soto Run Shorts in about 30 seconds! Follow these simple instructions:

1. Turn them inside out.
2. Hang them from the crotch of the liner
3. Take a pair of scissors or a sharp exacto knife and start cutting.

Very simple cheap solution.

Take a grocery bag, cut off the handle, streatch out the other handle, and tie it around your waist, stick the rest of the bag down your shorts to cover your bits and pieces. Works like a charm, is free, and recycles; plus you crinkle when you walk.

Not cheaper, but even simpler: Just stuff a plastic grocery bag down the front of your tights. Works for me, even running at -30 deg C in Ottawa.

Get some wind briefs. I also run with wind pants instead of tights.

I don't remember what brand I have but they certainly weren't $40. More like $15-$20 at my local running shop.

If you're having this problem with temps in the 30s, you may have a circulation problem...consider visiting a doc. I wear running underwear with a windproof panel but only when its near zero and windy. 30s is barely tights weather..

X2 on the sock...also known as a Unit heater!

Had this problem as well when I lived in Vermont. The windproof underwear works well, but I've also found that a simple position shift can be effective too. Sometimes I would get really cold in a "tip forward" position, then be fine after adjusting to a more vertical position.

Or you can just forget all that and move to a place (western Washington, in my case), where 40 is considered cold and 2 inches of snow is reason to shut down the city. :)

hahahaha...this brings back memories of my first year of tris. I had bought my P2K in December and we had an unusual warm spell where I lived so all the snow was melted off the roads so I decided to go for a bike ride. The day I went it was really cold though but I figured since the roads were dry I was good. So I put my bike shorts on and then some flimsy tights on over top. I was about 30 minutes away from home when I literally couldn't feel my junk anymore. It was SOOOOOO cold. Even when I stuck my hands down my pants it was brutal. So I turn around to head back home and realize I am going into the wind. I was so worried I was going to have frostbite and lose all my goodies. It took about 12 hours for them to warm up.
Since that day, I go out with WAY too many clothes on. :)

It seemed implied that the OP was not from a cold-weather climate, you acclimate to cold weather in much the same way that you acclimate to hot weather I imagine. Running in the 'cold' for him was probably more of a shock to his system than it was for someone who is used to it, thus his body probably drew more blood from 'extremities' to keep his core temp up than it likely would from someone who is used to the weather.

I know I've been running a lot in the 30s and 40s and it still feels cold to me, but if we had a day where it was in the 30s or 40s like in January or Feb after I've already acclimated to the cold I'd be out in shorts and flip flops like it was the tropics.

Not sure if this is the right thread but think this is what happened on my run on Sat morning. Does this junk freezing thing feel like its burning? I stopped and immediately covered my junk with hands to warm it up and was fine after that.

My shelties have this problem. They're low to the ground so when we hit snow on the run, they pretty much bury their junk in the snow. It's all fun and games until you frostbite the penis.

To enjoyed this feeling during a mid-December reverse sprint. When I hit the water the fun really started. Fortunately only lasted four or five minutes

Yup. Totally agree. Below 23F or -5C is about the point where I stop wearing shorts when I'm running. I'm just not a fan of run tights but I'll wear them between 20F and 0F, any cooler than that and I'll hop on the trainer instead.

Anyways, at 30F, nothing is "freezing" and you won't get frostbite/frostnip but you can definitely be cold. In the summer here in Canada if we have an unseasonably cold day and it drops down to the 40's or 50's in the evening it feels pretty darn cold. But after spending a couple weeks around -10F in the winter, at 40F you'll see shorts and shirts on the run paths, and a few patios open for beers.

It's all about what you're used to. In Canada and northern states you can have two people running side by side, one in tights+jacket+gloves+toque, the other in shorts and a long sleeve shirt.

I'm sure you have plenty of answers by now (I'm not being bothered to read the whole thread) but I've been wearing a pair of Adidas short tights under my running tights when it's cold. I've managed this in 1 degree F so far with no frozen manhood. Without them, the tights alone are not enough (agreed the wind makes it through).

I think the adi shorts were around $20ish bucks. Well worth it.

They still make polypropylene clothing? They shouldn't - makes for unbearable BO. Polyester or SmartWool much better.

In Chicago too and this is a big problem on these really windy and below zero temperature days. I even resorted to putting in a newspaper in my pants to block the wind and prevent my junk from freezing. I looked on amazon and found that they make wind blocker underwear for that exact same situation. Sugoi has some and so does Brooks but they're expensive. Ended up buying the Terramar Wind Boxer-Brief. The front panel is designed to block wind. Not sure if they work but the reviews were good and only $12 bucks.

Thankfully this thread lacks pictures... I went for a ride a couple weeks back in sub 30 degree weather in just a pair of tri shorts, knee warmers and a couple of tops. Got home and seriously I thought I had permanently damaged my junk. It was all puffy on one side (exposed to the wind through the shorts) and normal on the other (skin side). I vowed never to go for another ride or run below 50 degrees with a single layer covering my man bits...

A couple of pieces of duct tape on the inside of your running tights will work well as a wind blocker.

I just wear tri shorts under my running tights or shorts. Works like a charm.

Sugoi makes an insulated underwear that also has a wind blocker. Works amazingly well. Worth every single penny. I've run in them in neg windchill with no issues.

I went the plastic baggy route just the other day here in Chicago (F3 half marathon). Wife was dropping me off and after jumping out of the car (the run is on the lakefront where it is MUCH more windy) it was very apparent that if I did not increase coverage from my running tights and running pants on top than it was going to be more than miserable down south. Grabbed a ziplock baggy full of cheese crackers that we usually reserve for our toddler and jammed that down the tights.

Win/Win - felt comfortable all through the run..and yes..I did eat the cheesy crackers at mile 9 or so.

Gross? Maybe, but it had me kinda giggling like an idiot when I was eating them and thinking how it reminded me of the whole Ferris Buhlers Day off "want a gummy bear? they are warm from being in my pocket" line.

Having said all that - sitting at our kitchen table right now at 5am when I should have been out running..unfortunately it's now -15f and around -40f with the wind chill...decided we dont have enough ziplock bags or cheesy crackers to take the boys out this AM. Instead they will be getting a spa day (aka treadmill) at the gym later this afternoon.

Nature built in a cold defense mechanism called "turteling." Those accustomed to colder climates have the inate ability to "turtle". Reportedly, some can even completely turtle such that there is no evidence of male parts. The only downside is when you go to pee and find that you've turtled.

This sounds ridiculous but I have been doing it for years and it works really well; I put Duct Tape on my long johns covering my entire penile area. It keeps me toasty warm and full size even at -30 Celsius on ski's and runs. Give it a try.

What is the cut-off for "Duct Tape Legal"? I am terrified to go out there on the road without my duct tape.

 I ran yesterday morning with tights, long sleeve shirt, thing gloves, and ear warmer.

What kind of thing gloves are you using?

Nordic skiers and those in the northern areas learn to bring extra socks/mittens to shove down your front of your bottoms to act as a barrier and to prove warmth. Experience helps in learning what to wear at the start and what to bring along.

Maybe can help? "It even has a special coin pouch." They didn't have that back in the old days...

I run in running shorts without any underwear and sometimes my junk will get tickled while running and that's annoying.

This may help. I saw this when looking for some new ski gloves under the accessories department. Halvard may have heard of this since this seems to have been developed for skiers. Runners aren't the only ones with "cold one" issues.

You do realize how old this is.......was this the Record10C original?

My long dead father in law was a keen cyclist back in the day. Back then, men rode bikes and they did it year round. They'd stop for snow but still ride when it was below freezing.

When I started riding as an adult he passed on just one piece of advice. In cold weather fold a face cloth in half diagonally and stick it down the front of your bike shorts like a loin cloth. I mentioned polar fleece and he agreed a suitably sized piece cut from an old polar fleece jersey or jacket would be even better.

I used that for years both running and riding when I lived in Canada. Works a treat. give it a try

I used to live and train in Canada, year round. When I moved there as a young teenager I heard that Canadian men actually have 2 penises. (by the way, Trivial Pursuit, a Canadian game, has a question about this. What is a man with 2 penises called. while you would think that "Canadian" would be the answer, it's actually "biphalic"

Canadian men have a "summer penis", that looks much like you see in those movies on the internet.
They also have a "winter penis" that well, looks similar, but, well, smaller.

My problem is that I moved away from Canada in the winter, so was still wearing my winter penis. Rather annoyingly, the shipping company lost my summer penis during the move, so now I'm stuck wearing my winter one, year round. Not a good look at the pool in a budgie smuggler and may also go some way to explaining why my wife and I haven't had any more children since we moved here.

I didn't read all the comments, but I had the same problem.

I solved it with "Löffler transtex Boxershort" and "Löffler transtex windstopper Boxershort".
If it's really cold, I use both at the same time - never ever had a problem anymore.

I didn't even read anything else in this thread. 45 years ago I lived in the Chicago area . . . we had something like 23 days where the high never went above zero - we just put a tube sock over it and we were fine. Toughen up!

Cross-country skier Remi Lindholm said he suffered a “little bit frozen” penis in a race Saturday at the Beijing Winter Olympics, Reuters reported.


“You can guess which body part was a little bit frozen when I finished. ... It was one of the worst competitions I’ve been in. It was just about battling through,” Lindholm told Finnish media, per the wire service.


Lindholm’s dilemma was prolonged in the extreme cold and wind. He finished 28th in the 50-kilometer mass start race, which was shortened to 30 km due to the weather. He trailed the winner, Russian Alexander Bolshunov, by 4 minutes and nearly 23 seconds.


He applied a heat pack to his groin afterward but “when the body parts started to warm up after the finish, the pain was unbearable,” he added, per Reuters.


The 24-year-old competed in two other races earlier in the games, finishing well off the pace.

Does anyone know what type of tape the cross country skiers put on their face to stop frostbite? I normally wear a full face balaclava, which can be uncomfortable and difficult to breathe through.

In all seriousness, I have found Gorewear short and tights to be very helpful in the cold groin prevention. They have a windbloc panel in the front which helps tremendously.

They used KT tape despite it not being proven to work for this purpose. Some are sponsored by KT so that may have come to play.

I find stockings work better than socks for me. Keeps my penis more jolly and much more comfortable fit.

Cycle commuting in -14 C I used to pop a plastic sandwich bag down the front of my bike shorts (just flat, not trying to wrap around). Was enough to block the wind and trap a bit of heat. The little plastic wrappers that disposable cutlery came/comes in used to be great to put inside gloves to achieve the same for my outer two fingers on each hand that tended to get colder than the others.

Water bottle turned into a slushy, but I was actually a bit warm by time I got there.
