Garmin 310XT

405CX

Vibration alerts on the 310XT seem pretty cool. 20 hours of battery life are way cool. The 405 seems geared towards runners or calorie counters.

I hope the 310XT is available before lake placid!

Hmmm, says MAC compatible...While it is interesting, I still don't need GPS while racing.

One thing that they may or may not have for summer is a soft-band and bike quick release. The quick release really is essential to make the watch useful for multisport.

It would be nice to have one unit to race and train with. Hopefully, you aren't staring at your watch in either scenario. :) You can have the GPS/pace info to look back on after your training. You can have the HR graphs to look at from your race.

I agree and disagree and see it bothe ways. When I race I don't realyl care about looking down at a watch for too much input. I merely need to know my HR and mile splits. Plus, I've been running with the Garmin GPS units and have gone from being told I am running a 7:00 mile to running a 12:00 mile b/c the watch lost contact with a satellite or two. Hopefully this 310 will have reception on par with the FRunner 205/305 and not the 405.

But, top each their own tons of phenomenal options out there.

I haven't had issues with lost satellites on my 305, but I only occasionally look at my watch during races to read 1 mile the auto laps. My prob has been that for the run of my last HIM and last two half marathons, the HR strap starts sliding down so I end up with no useful HR data when I get home. If this new strap is more like the Polar one which seems to stay on me better, then I'll be interested in the 310.

This may not be solely satellite connection. Stopping your arm movement to look actually could be the cause of some of the shift. Averaging should knock this out but the forward motion of your wrist is always going to be either faster or slower than your run speed except when you stop arm movement to look.

But i look forward to actually seeing one of these in the flesh... I wonder if it will be backwards compatible with 305 cadence sensors...

probably not.

Umm....

GPS -check

bike speed- check

running speed- check

HR-Check

Swim proof- check

15 hour plus battery life- check

Can receive/record power info- check

IF the 310 can do all this then isn't it the "holy grail" of multisport watches?

I am unabashedly geeked out right now...

I have the same problem with the old garmin style HR strap. I've found 2 pieces of medical tape on wither side of my pecs correct that issue.

I hate how "clunky" the Garmin strap is, but it is nice and flexible, so it stays put perfectly on my small frame. The sleeker, but more rigid Polar strap will not stay put on me, and the contact points don't meet my skin well.

I think the Polar WearLink strap is probably the way to go, but I don't have one yet.

Add powermeter compatible to that list..

This is huge...I think Garmin has hit a home run if this device delivers on all the promised features.

The WearLink straps are very nice, especially the newest WearLink+.

I recently bought one here: http://www.hrmusainc.com/a-strap-wearlink.shtml

< $20 and free shipping.

Edited to add: I just got the replacement strap since I already had a WearLink transmitter. The whole thing is $55.

What is it with this blasted sport that just when you think you have all the toys, something else comes along? Anyone want to buy a couple of pre-loved 305s?

Looks like they might be available just in time for Christmas...

It looks like $350 is the price for the version without the HRM strap. The version with the HRM strap included looks like it's going to run about $400. (Based on the RoadRunnerSports site.)

sweet.

Our biggest challenge isn’t someone else. It’s the ache in your lungs. The burning in your legs. And that voice in your head that yells “CAN’T,” but you don’t listen. You just push harder. And then you hear that voice whisper, “can” and you discover that the person you thought you were is no match for the person you really are

I was just thinking the same thing. I'm building a custom CX bike right now and every time I turn around something gets more expensive. The $300 fork I wanted is no longer available, so I'm getting the $500 one... just tack this new Garmin onto the quickly-mounting list of expenses, i guess.

Looks cool but I'm still a little concerned that it's going to be too bulky to fit under a wetsuit sleeve. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Okay, so I feel like I'm the only disappointed one.

The two major changes - double battery life and waterproof - were the no brainer changes.

I was really hoping the form factor would be improved. It still looks huge and clunky on the wrist. Less than the 305, sure, but still. I was hoping for something more along the 405 form, but without the bezel, and with all the new features.

Up in the air. Was hoping for something more (color, maps, etc.) or game changing. This is just evolutionary.

It didn't seem that it had a "altimeter" built in...That would take this product from really awesome to Kim Kardashian<----amazing..

Well my 305 has been having issues as of late, so hopefully they become super cheap. The waterproof feature is great for training, but I also have to agree that, you cant wear this under a wetsuit. Too much of a pain to strip off over.

Does that mean we'll get to see videos of the 310 xt "syncing" with another unit and it will somehow become famous? :)

You are not the only one who is disappointed. Garmin did NOTHING to improve this device. I will consequently pay NOTHING to get one.
