St. Croix Picture Thread (original 2006...added 2008 and 2012)

Alex (MTL) and I took a set of photos from two rides around the island of St. Croix. They say it is like a mini big island with a dry side and a "wet side". The vegetation can change from lush tropical forest to arid desert in no less than one mile as you summit over the spine of hills that essentially divide the highway.
We got to ride the Beast, which is as nasty as everyone claims it is. No doubt, this is clearly a hill, which being early in the race is one where you won't make your race, but you can clearly break your race within a few minutes of quad burning redline. I sure am happy I have the 34x25 combo. I rode up it "easy" (so to speak) and I was going at 9 kph in my 34x25 at barely 50 RPM on many sections.
Other than the Beast there are incredibles views of the Caribbean sea. One area that is not on the course, but just a 2 mile detour off the eastern end of the course is point Uddal. This is the Easternmost point in the United States. The views from there are stunning.
Based on talking with some vets who have done both, St. Croix offers a "Hawaii lite" experience. Less cost, less distance to race, less training, similar vegetation, hills, wind and heat. Best of all, you don't have to be a speedy stud to get here.
Here are the pics:
Walking the summit of the Beast (I actually rode up, and went down for the photo op, but could not clip back in cause it is so steep....
At the base of the Beast (Alex posing with cosmetic bulk....)...note the chip and seal rugged road surface, although they are out paving parts of the climb

He claims they are normal size compared to Spencer Smith or Bjorn. So what does that make mine...toothpick...in which case Triyoda is a needle...

Not only does Alex have studly quads, but he has a 2:12 half Ironman bike split PB and a 2:49 marathon PB in his resume. Now he just has to put the two together...he's just touring St. Croix. His A race is Muskoka...

I knew the moment I posted these pics that someone would come up with that. Turns out, the reflective tape that I used at Ironman LP last year is so high quality that it has not come off (not that I have tried) even after several usages over the past 10 months. I figured the reflective value has some value in scaring of crazy islanders, driving on the left side of the road and all...
Edit: I actually needed the reflective gear for my stealth Whiteface Mtn Hill climb training to kick Triyoda's ass, since we have to start at 5 am and get to the summit before the park rangers kick us off the mountain :-)

The paint job of my bike was done in november 2004. Yes, I took the color schema from the P3C prototype at that time...so I had my P3 Aluminum painted before a P3C was on the road for normal folks. I don't see the point of upgrading to a P3C (5000$) since the P3 has pretty much the same aero advantage...
Paint Job costs (100$)... Also, if Steve Larsen was able to post 4:30 in IMLP with a regular P3, I'm so far behind the limits of this bike... If you take a close look to the paint job you will notice that I made some slight modifications (top tube is red and I didn't wrote the "carbon" word next to P3) I posted a thread of my bike paint job last year... I'm not pretending that my bike is a P3C but you must admit that it looks better now than that yellow original color.

KGrog...what happened in the KGrog vs Nina Machina Kraft smackdown at St. Anthony's...did you go sub 2 and show her your rear end?
We should see your wife tomorrow. I guess she is in the stay homestay at Dave Harju, which is not that far from Point Uddal. You should tell her to take a trip out there. We put some heat on Dave yesterday and told him that he better be in the lead bike group by the Beast or resign himself to a 4+ hour ITT like last year.
Alex says that we need a "post your quad pic" thread. I want triyoda to post his toothpicks. I know I can beat him at that!
We'll try to get some pics from the 11 am swim in the harbour. Today is nice and sunny, lots of WIND. Hopefully it gets hotter today so that us canucks can get used to the heat before race day.

Nina beat me up at SAT as that swim did too. Speaking of Nina, I saw her sprinting down the Minneola trail the other day. I figured she was doing speedwork. Funny thing is, I looked out there about 2.5 hours later and see her sprinting by again. Must of been a 3 hour speed session..
Are you guys staying anywhere near Dave and Kimberly? Hopefully you all can meet up.
Go get em Dev!

We hope to meet up with Dave for dinner today, so it would be great to meet your better half. Someone has to keep Dave honest this evening and lay down some smack on him, so we'll have to coach her at it :-).
Today in St. Croix, there are lots of white pasty northern posers like Alex walking around like burnt lobsters. Fortunately, I have a genetic advantage in the sun :-).

Dev,
What cycling shoes are you wearing. They look like three strap velcro closures which are really hard to find these days. I am in the market for new shoes and am looking for somthing with three straps and velcro closures on all three straps.
Thanks.

check out the DMT Kyoma worn by team CSC, they are 3-strap velcro shoes and are light as hell. Some people dont like the white-bike-shoe look, but I think they come in Silver/black/yellow as well.

Fleck...they are the Peal Izumi low end shoes (I think it is called Vagabond...around $109 CDN). They fit great and I wanted to get away from the carbon shoes because I have found that I always get a few hotsports, that goes away with a composite sole.

Very cool, Dev. That DOES look like Hawaii.
Gotta argue the closeness factor, though. For us left-coasters, Hawaii is less than half the travel time (non-stop, baby!). Meanwhile, you can't get to St Croix from here. :-)

Aztec, I do agree for you left coast guys, Hawaii is a lot quicker and you guys can just whip out and do Honu for half the training and still get the real big island experience without having to qualify. Tom, thanks for the good words. It would have been great to meet you tough :-(
By the way, aparently the road crews have been out in full force. On Wed when we went to ride the Beast we had to navigate around a pile of different paving teams including one part way up the Beast. Rumour has it that the worst parts of the pothole ridden chip seal featured course are now smooth as silk !!! Next thing you know it will be 70 degrees and no wind!
