Well... that is interesting to hear. Only thing I can think of was that it was a HOT day, but I assume its been hot there before.

Or perhaps the conditions of last year were very favorable for a fast race...I'm not sure since this was my first vineman.

Hey Guys ... based on living in the area and announcing over the entire day:

Most all the top athletes off the bike ... women included were not effected by the crash. Some items of note

* The swim was long ... by about 100-150 meters ... speaking with the winner, he swam 48:30 all by himself and he has a great sense of pace/ distance ... there were some oddly slow times BUT others were within 2-3min. of expected so I'm not sure the dynamic ... we tend to see faster swims times from later swim waves the way it works on that course but I'm not sure what happened.

* The weather conditions were "average" for this time of year ... yup it got warm but we've seen decent times in those conditions

* I think alot of guys were chasing on the bike trying to make up time or chase a ghost (the leader) ... There were alot of fast bikes times with corresponding slow (some very) run times (for the given runners ability) ... the winner was VERY shy on run fitness and that run was expected ... there were other athletes i know well who expected to run faster (much faster) and didn't get close . I think the bike course is deceptive and it chips away at you over 112 ... especially with building wind and temps over the final 50 miles. The 2nd place athlete ran 3:04 on that course so correct pacing, fitness and nutrition could yield a fast run.

There were about 4-5 guys in the field we thought might go under 9:30 ... 1 did

EDIT NOTE: the bike crash effected athletes on 2nd loop (mile 100'ish) ...(though I believe the crash happened to an athlete on loop 1) ...

Hope that helps ...

The New Specialized Wind Tunnel
Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
Yes, Game Changer
Minor move forward
Won't budge the needle
