Swim cap good for hair? Quote | Reply

I don't wear a swim cap but I see a lot of swim team member wearing swim caps. I was wondering if they wear them to protect their hair from the chlorine because they are in the water so much?

Water gets in so I don't think it protects your hair from chlorine. I think folks wear them to keep hair out of the pool and for lower resistance. And viz in OW.

Keeps long hair from flopping around, and gets them used to race day (less drag, so they will wear on race day)

actually it does protect the hair a LOT. on my old team, some guys wore caps some did not. all the guys that didn't wear them had fried / dead / faded looking hair. all the guys that did wear caps had normal - non-swimmer looking hair. even though water gets under the cap, i think it protects the hair from a constant flow of chlorinated water - or something like that. not entirely sure how it works, but it does.

one idea that might help with the chlorine, if you make sure your hair is wet BEFORE you start swimming in chlorinated water it helps reduce the damage, considerably IMHO

you're supposed to shower anyway, right?

^^Yes. less flow of water --> less chlorine damage

Don't know about the hair.

I'm bald, and I still wear one occasionally to train for the races. For me, it's a very odd feeling... I shave smooth, so that damn thing keeps popping off and floating away. :C

I might give the swim cap a try and see if my hair fairs better.

yes it does protect your hair even though it gets wet, and the difference is significant.

Order one of the silicone versions. they are more comfortable than the cheap latex versions that you get at races.

Hair gets wet under a cap in large part because of perspiration.

Swimmers should shower before entering a pool for reasons related to pool chemistry, but also to protect skin and hair. To add to what was said earlier, taking a shower means that skin first contacts slightly less chlorinated water from the shower, and this same water fills the hollow hair follicles. Probably a conjecture, but perspiration and oils under a sweaty cap further protect hair.

I wear a cap over really short hair because my (indoor 50m) pool is 78 degrees and it's cold when I first get in.

I train without a cap and race with one. As a competitive swimmer in school this is what I was taught. Think it's prob a preference thing too though. Cheers

Yupyup. That and I have tried swimming without a cap on and my hair kept getting in my face even when it was pulled back.

My blonde tresses would be a hot mess if not for wetting my hair prior to swimming and a swim cap.

I also use Moroccan Oil on my hair after I wash it on swim days. That seems to help keep it soft and shiny ;)

I always put some Crew Conditioner in my dry hair prior to a pool swim and them put on a silicone cap..just my preference.

My cousin is a hairstylist, and she recommended wetting hair and conditioning it before swimming, + wearing a swim cap. The cap helps hold the conditioner on your hair so chlorine affects it less. My hair is coarse and dry anyway, but it used to feel like straw after swimming, even after washing it right away. Pre-swim conditioning + the cap helped a lot.

Third time swimming with cap, no condition or rinsing though. Hair feels much better.
