I signed up for a triathlon recently, and the event organizer used active.com as the vendor for enrollment.
Evidently, there was some check box that said "free 30 day website trial" that was checked, and that I did not un-check while paying for the event. What was not clear is that they charge you 60 dollars a month, 30 days after the event if you don't uncheck that box.
I was hoping I could make others aware of this scam, and that event organizers will take note of this and find a more reputable company to use for their enrollment. Its like having to tell McDonald's that you don't want a $60 charge for that a Cheesburger you bought a month ago. I buy lots of stuff on the internet, and have never had to deal with this before. I don't understand how businesses like this get away with unethical practices like this.

The readiness with which Active reverses this charge only serves to show that even they recognise the shadiness of this practice.
Shit like this should be an "opt-in" rather than an "opt-out" on event signup pages.

I wish I had the means and lack of morals these people have. I'd be riding around on the most expensive bike I could find making it rain.
One event with 500 people nets them $30,000 extra doing this. Most people doing these endurance races also have plenty of cash, and probably don't notice this extra charge. This isn't a cheap hobby , and these people know that.

It's not a checkbox you have to uncheck. There is page with the description of the program and you have to opt in or click a "no thanks" link. A little bit of reading before you click will avoid the problem, it isn't like it's burried in the terms of use agreement.

I've never been a fan of active and whenever possible I will mail in my registration rather than give my money to active. I encourage all race directors to find alternatives. They do stuff like that all the time.

The other BS scam active.com is doing is requiring that your USAT license be paid up through the event you are signing up for. I am not doing any tris for 2 months after my USAT card expires, so I was going to hold off on renewing until I needed it so that I could get 2 extra months down the road.
When I went to get early registration for next year's events, it wouldn't let me because my current license will be expired by the time the event happens. In the past, we could just show a valid one at packet pickup and be good to go. I emailed the race contact (WTC) to see if there is any way around this and they said they had to do this because there was no way to verify USAT cards on raceday. I told them their new rule is too tight for me and I refused to sign up for their races because that rule was the straw that broke the came's back. I skipped out on 2013 IMTX and 2013 St. George 70.3 over this rule.
I understand they can make all the rules they want, but I'm so sick of all the collusion and crazy ass rules from WTC and their cronies that I am going to just let them find business from someone else.

Hmm, I just signed my daughter up for an event on Active.com and didn't notice that box... Do you know how I can check if that box was checked and I unknowingly signed myself up for something I don't want? Maybe I should call them if I can find a #.

I am also interested in how your find out if we have been scammed. I look at my IMLT active receipt and do not see anything saying I signed up for something.

I just went into my active account and see nothing. I checked my IMLT registration and see nothing. Interesting on my history at active, it does not even list the IMLT I signed up through them with.
Will keep an eye out on my credit card.

It just happened to me with Miami when I registered.
A pop up page came up out of no where telling me something was free, then in fine print.....start getting charged every month there after! Took me about 5 minutes to figure out I could just X out the page and my registration was under on the next window.
I can very close to getting screwed. This is a
VERY SHADDY PRACTICE
.
I expect more legitimacy when entering expensive WTC events!

Dont blame WTC for Active - Active has a ton of events, not just WTC events. You know who to PM with your issues.

this came up for our upcoming race and Active.com addressed it by responsding that the USAT renewal would be good for 12 months past the original expiration date - ergo you don't lose a couple months by renewing early. I don't know if they pro-rate the extra months or what the details are...and I won't be able to verify that for a few months to see if it actually goes down , but it should resolve the 'limbo license' issue.

You checked the box. It is at the very end on the 'confirmation page.' the page is designed to make you click yes or agree and then continue again. At this point you are registered for your race, but the website is designed to appear like there is one more confirmation you must do.

but if you aren't racing between june and october and your current membership expires in July, it makes you renew it so you have a membership between July & October that you don't need. So then your expiration expires in July of the following year instead of October which is when it would expire if you were able to renew in october for the race you want to do in October.

true, you'd be out the $8 bucks or so of 2 month membership costs. however, you can also buy a one day and then apply it to a yearly at your race, yes?
