Quarq: What size for Felt B14? Quote | Reply

I have a Felt B14 that is completely stock. The website lists the following for my crankset:

"Drivetrain: Vision TriMax Aluminum 2 piece w/ Integrated MegaExo BB, A6061-T6 cold Forged solid Crank Arms, 110mm BCD, 52/38T"

I have no clue what all the different BB's mean and how they work with each other...

S975 w/ GXP bb; you'll want to look on the inside of your crank arm where the pedal screws in to find the crank arm length stamped there.

From what I can tell, you'll also have to choose b/w either compact (50-34) or standard (53-39) as the S975 doesn't come in the 52-38T configurations.

Thanks for the reply.

Can you also tell me if that GXP model will work on my road bie that currently has a Dura Ace 7800 crank?

No, GXP is specific to Sram. Ideally, you'd buy 2xSram GXP bb's, one for your road and one for your tri bike ($40 at most, not a biggie) then swap the crank b/w bikes.

I thought the B14 model needed the FSA light model?

As far as I know there are no specific bike-related requirements for the B12/14/16. I could be wrong though.

Ultimately, to the OP, it's best to voice your questions to the source. Quarq is extremely good at customer service and information on quarqs.

Make sure you get a bike fit first and that you are positive that the crank length you have works for you. You don't want to drop that kind of money on a quarq and then realize you need shorter cranks. I swapped to 170's on mine, made sure that they worked for me, and then found a used quarq in 170mm cranks (from someone who had to get another quarq crank to drop down to 160's). Just for reference, I'm 6'0 and most of the other people I know that are my height have dropped all the way to 165's. I didn't go that low, as once I went to 170's, it fixed the problems I had (tired hips and calves).

Nope, all that matters is whether it is BB30 (or 86, etc) or not, and the B14 is non-BB. Not sure what kind of bottom bracket it has tho, I assume it's possible the fsa model might use the same bottom bracket. I just put a Sram S975 on my B14 (and I'm kinda still way pumped about it!).

You're right. The FSA model has the same BB as the B14, but you could always buy the GXP BB to make the SRAM one work. Did you have any rear brake clearance issues with the crank arm with the GXP BB?

Nothing different than with the Shimano Ultegra crank I had on their beforehand. Basically, if its fully open it, the allenhead bolt rubs, it interferes at partially open, but fully closed it is fine. I assume it was the same for the stock Vision crank, but I didn't have that one on there long.

Someone at my LBS said I could not do a Quarq on my 2011 B14 without replacing my back brake caliper. I run C2 Hed Jet wheels so my brakes are wide open in the back. What wheels do you have on your bike?

Ok, I can see how that could be an issue. Eyeballing it, there looks to be enough room for a few more mm (don't seem to have any measuring device with me at my current location, unfortunately, but I can almost cram my pinkie finger into the gap) from the stock wheels (without my dial caliper, can't seem to find out how wide these are, but they mate up well with a 22mm tire). Checking it more closely, the Sram S975 actually has just a tad bit more clearance than the ultegra crank did. Hopefully the problem was with a different quarq crank. Changing brake calipers sounds like a huge hassle.

I'll see if I can't find a good measuring device soon so I can give you some real accurate numbers (currently crashing on a living room floor in Boulder for the summer so I don't have all my normal tools).

It looks like this is a common problem with the rear brakes even with the stock crank. There's a few possible fixes outlined here tho if you haven't already done that.
