Blister! What to do?
Quote
|
Reply
So I went for a last run before Vineman 70.3, and didn't notice a small hole in my sock - now I've got a decent blister just in front of the arch of my foot, on the inside.
What do I do?
Pop it or leave it alone and hope it heals up in 48 hours?

If it's really big, I'd drain it, otherwise leave it alone. Tincture of benzoin is supposed to help heal them & is available at any drugstore, but I haven't tried it personally.

Get some of these:
As far as popping it:
IF you do, clean the area around it, sterilize needle, and go from OUTSIDE the blister in,
that is, catch some healthy skin, penetrate the blister, and drain. Then use iodine to clean,
then apply the above.
Make sure the skin is clean, and as oil free as possible. Try not to touch the adhesive and
follow the directions.
These will stay on through the swim if properly applied.

I have heard of people draining them and squirting Super-glue into the drained blister. A little cyanide never hurt anyone.

That's the way I've always done it. Old rock climbing trick. When I was regularly rock climbing, I had more superglue than skin on my hands. :)

If you have to run, I find a layer of new skin, followed by a layer of super glue works like magic.

A dozen responses to this query and no votes for "HTFU"? Shocking. I don't think we're in Slowtwich anymore, Toto.

I am also mildly surprised at the lack of HTFU in this thread, but I'm a wimp, so there you go.
Do I pop the blister before I put the second skin on or not?

Because sometimes HTFU goes wrong. A small wussy blister on the bottom of a toe or foot can lead to a small change in your gait. That small change in gait can lead to tiny strains in your muscles and tendons due to compensation. Those tiny strains lead to major muscle and tendon soreness and even more compensation.
The next thing you know, you have itb issues and a pulled muscle in your back. And you are wondering why.
When HTFU goes horribly wrong.

Pop it with a pin and drain it. Keep it open to the air so it dries out. When you run use those blister plasters and wear two thin pairs of socks...and carry some duct tape just in case the plaster comes off. After running spray it with Betadine which is very good disinfectant and non greasy.
If you don't pop it, then run with it the pressure of the fluid tends to expand the edges of the blister making it bigger.
Good luck.

Doesn't sting. Just have to be careful that you don't glue your hand to your foot. But, superglue isn't all that flexible so may irritate things a bit if it is on the sole of your foot. I'd just prick the prick, drain it and put 2nd skin over it. If I was in the field, I'd make sure it was drained and put duct tape over it.
