As one of the average joe's I agree with you.
I did it on ~10 to ~12 hours a week this season, with that training only being halfway structured. Plenty of things I could have done to harden up more. Drink less, train more, train harder/smarter, and I'm into the 58 minute range now so I overshot.
Breaking the hour Eddy Merckx style though, I'm not sure everyone could do that. I don't know if I ever could, maybe. But I'm only average, not genetically awful.
3.4 watts/kg, did ~58min equivalent at ~260-270watts

I ask because I have it in my head that a majority of serious racing cyclists can go under an hour if they put their mind to it and do the homework. Especially with modern equipment. I'm trying to see if I have a skewed viewpoint or not.

Btw, nslckevin: I'm calling you out to a Merckx-style throwdown at the 8/22 40k PCSD. If you choose to accept this challenge, well, I'll think of something.
Bring it bitch. :-)
Sounds fun. I am actually quite curious to see what kind of a time hit I'll take going Merckx vs the Shiv and all the goodies. I am curious to see if I can't make some kind of comparison of then vs now.
BTW, Merckx style means the following:
Road helmet
Jersey and shorts
No deep wheels. Something like Ksyriums.
Wait, you do or do not get to use banned stimulants in Merckx mode?

Absolutely yes, but only stimulants, no steroids or epo.

50:48 for 25 miles with 300W at 67.8kg (4.4W/kg):
So would get under the hour with around 192W (2.8W/kg).

That's a crazy good power/speed ratio, even for Moriarty.
If you went 57 on 260W, then you would have done 59:24 on ~232W... so still pretty aero.

Holy crap. With 400W (top pro level) you could be at 45:30... 33 mph... 53 kph. Have you ever backed out your CdA?
EDIT: I'm getting a CdA of ~.185 assuming sea level, and crank power.

Wow. You are the exact same height/weight as me. Long arms too. It's hard to find people on this forum who are 6'3" and sub-160, let alone people who can also put out 285 Watt FTP. Bravo! I'm jealous, I think I'm 50 watts lower...

I guess to add to the mix. I went 57:07 on 264 watts. I'm 6' even and 157 lbs. About 3.7 watts per kilogram.

Yes, that's about right, I aerolabbed that TT at 0.186. The course does have a "gift hill" at the start, but it doesn't make THAT much difference. Took 3.5 mins to reach the bottom of the hill, ave speed was around 53kph at that point. I then averaged 47.0kph for the remaining section with no elevation change. It was on a dual carriageway with a good road surface, but late in the evening, so not much traffic on there. Undoubtedly a bit of assistance from traffic passing, though. 45:30 with 400W isn't that different to what Michael Hutchinson does, as he has done just over 46 mins and says in his book that his FTP is around 400W. He did that time on a faster course, though, I'd hope that I'm a little more aero than he is now, as he's a few kg heavier than me, so I may get under 50 mins next time I have a chance to ride the faster course.

If you've detailed your positioning and equipment anywhere, I'd love to see it.
I thought I was doing pretty well with .24 @78kg. I've improved a little this year with a position change, but I have a long way to go...

FYI: Off to a practice 20 mile TT in prep for next week's State TT (40K) championship. Trying to do everything as close as possible to next week - wearing aero helment, race wheels, etc. This makes me more anxious than a triathlon. We'll see how it goes.

Today's results:
85 degrees, 66% humidity, 9 mph wind, chip & seal state highway
19 miles 45:23
25.1 mph
260 watts average
168 bpm HR average
Hopefully with a little rest, I can up my wattage a bit for next weekend.
