Russian River Challenge swims have been cancelled

Glenda Carroll, Pacific Masters Open Water Chair, announced tonight that due to higher than normal bacteria levels in the Russian River, the Russian River Challenge swims have been
cancelled
. Bacterial levels have exceeded
State guidelines
.
Full refunds will be given.
Your health, safety and enjoyment of open water is our priority.
As the decision was made late Friday afternoon, we are sending out this special email. The organizers of the open water swim are trying to determine if it will be possible to replace this swim later this year. More information about the cancelled swim will be in the regular Update.

I contacted the RD and here is what he had to say:
"The high bacteria count this weekend was about 20 miles from where we swim, plus with
the flow of the river, that water will be long gone by our race day. There
is always a chance of a bacteria problem, but in 22 years, it has never been
an issue."

On top of that the bacteria level warning was DAYS ago and the signs that appeared at Johnsons Beach (vineman swim site) early int he week were taken down by WED ... we swam, no issues, water temp at the time 72 degrees ... and before anyone asks the water temp fluctuates so be prepared for wetsuit OR non wetsuit legal swim but in no way will the water be cold
Best,

The race director could have ignored the bacteria levels and put on the race anyway?

I know some RD's might ignore rules, but Vineman is real good about things like water temps and I assume water quality testing.

don't mean to hijack the thread, but you said you swam there this past weds so i'm assuming your local to the area. can you give me an idea of the weather (what to typically expect pre-race, mid-race and end of race etc). i've been looking at some weather forecast for the San Francisco area and it hasn't reached the 70's all month.

SF weather is not always a good indicator for weather in the Bay Area. It actually gets hotter to the north and south of the city.
