Recovery from 70.3

Rookie question...
Did Tremblant. How long does it take to recover from a 70.3, typically?
Tried a 10km run yesterday and a 60km bike today, both very easy pace, and I felt like garbage......had nothing..

I'm 48 yo. I did one 2 weeks ago and it took me over a week to feel good enough to do anything hard again. I've got another one next Sunday. Just hoping my fitness holds up.

Different depending on your experience and how your body recovers. Just listen to your body and when you start feeling good, get back out there.

Yes -
and please remember, a half is just that - HALF. What point was it in humanity that the grand goal is "
half
" - maybe we should have our gym classes have our fat kids do the 50yd dash when they are not playing Wii. Some of the current posts in this site give a HUGE amount of credence to
this
post....so spot on. Lets be real here - for most "Slowtwitch" people (as in muscle not as in Website) and half is a typical weekend training day. I have seen folks who were good cyclists, swimmer or runners individually do a half on smoke and mirrors on a Sunday - then on Monday they go right back to their normal work outs. If someone cant walk for a week after a half, or cant do their normal work outs (and they did not win) then something is just kinda batty, or they were not prepared. So, if a half is your goal in life - wonderful. If you just lost 90lbs and you want to go to finish - great. Just remember to keep things in perspective, it is a half.
Oh, and when I want to be clever - I can be. The problem is so many folks who dont know me (like you) have no idea that most things are meant in jest or tongue in cheek. But, just as you can take a half far far too seriously, you all take the internet far too seriously. All while not taking training seriously and then going out and and going home from a "participate" (I cant call it a race) on a back board with lungs full of water.

Hold it, you're saying that just because it's called a "half" it's not raced hard? When I race hard, whatever the distance, I need time to recover. That's what the OP was asking.
You, so eloquently said "20 minutes". You didn't even add something whimsical or clever to your post. Hey, you didn't even use the ST approved pink font.
Maybe, one day, they'll assemble and resurrect your ST posts for for future generations to enjoy.

A half isn't my goal in life, nor did I just have a massive weigh loss. It is my second summer doing tris, only having done a few sprints prior. Unprepared, probably! :). But no regrets, was a great experience for me, came in just over 5 hours, but pretty much had a meltdown on the run...
Again, just wondering how long the average MOPer takes to recover.

Hold on here....you ARE the average MOP'er. So, when you did your race last year - if it was a Sunday race, did you go to work on Monday? I am more than willing to bet that by the following weekend you felt just fine and went back to training as usual.

Like I said - 20 minutes. Then you drive home and take a shower. Then Monday, knowing that Sunday was nothing more than a typical training day...you do your normal work out as usual.
I do so hope we get some people posting about some serious post race agony and how it was terrible fits of sweaty fevers and days of cramping...that is just not the case. However, if you think that you are recovering faster or slower than the "
average
" that is sort of narcissistic.
If you ever get to volunteer at a race or even RD a race - what is neat, the Pro's - at least the many that I know. When they come in top 10 or so at a race, they finish, hang out for a few minutes....then go out for a jog. I had one pro (I think it was BigZach) finish in second and I think he then went and road the bike course again (and still was not the last cyclist - maybe it was Blake or Chris McDonald). Most AG's finish - then go out for a beer. Don't over complicate things, it makes them unenjoyable.

The web and ST is a great place, but it's really a bit funny when you see all the "telephone toughguy" talk back and forth. I'd really like to see some of these discussions take place face to face and note the differences and/or whether someone gets punched in the head.

So, you were serious that one only requires about 20 minutes to recover from a Half Ironman Race? Man, I must be doing something wrong. I wish I was a BAMF like you.

LOL, I have met THOUSANDS of Tri folks, dozens have been to my home. Post with my real name and if you ask around - I am in person EXACTLY like what I post like. Most of us are. So far, the only people I have ever seen get upset in person are idiots who were in over their heads the moment they signed up for a race, and they knew it. Fear rapidly leads to anger (as does insecurity).

Wait wait....so what are you doing 20 minutes after a half? Laying in the road? Sitting in an ambulance with hyponatremia? Rolling around cramping? Come one...get over it. 20 minutes after a half everyone is hanging out and eating bad food....
and yelling at some guy named Steve who has no idea how to give away free shit.

It wasn't directly targeted at you, you're snarky but some folks just get friggin rude and I'm guessing not too many people will get that rude to people they just meet, face to face...especially if you're about buck fifty soaking wet.

If you're saying that that an easy run or recovery ride is a workout, and can be done shortly after a race. then yes it can be done. However, that's not a workout. I know what I'm not doing 20 minutes after a Half Ironman Race. I'm not doing a 2 x 20' tempo set on the bike or on the run. It's going to take me some time before I do one of those.

I have met very few Tri folks that are not super cool at IM or at half's. I have met a shit ton of rude people at sprint/oly - hell, I have seen wrestling matches by Sprint idiots fighting over rack space (and they were both fat dudes on old road bikes). The sprint / oly folks just seem to take things far too seriously. Conversely, if you are in Lake Placid or CdA or PCB race week and walk into a restaurant alone, chances are someone is going to invite you to join their table.
I will say that as an RD I got FAR more complaints from Sprint/Oly folks than the Half/Full folks. Far more complaints from newbies as well. People just dont have their expectations properly set - and are so so so self important. It really is a shame that many of you new folks were not around for "Peaceful Tribe", Team SecondHand Racing and the many other things that this site does that makes us a family. Certainly newbie half folks complain more than people with a few years or road racing backrounds.

This. :)
Yes, I was fine 20 minutes (OK...maybe 30....). I wasn't asking how long it takes to recover enough to joke around and have beers. Wondering when folks are back to full strength.
I thought my original question was fairly straight forward, but apparently not.

Okay - lets go back to basics, time for a refresher course or maybe a Tri 101 - "Things we do, why and what we presume".
Many many training programs that are very popular have just about the same schedule, for just about the same reasons. These plans do things day to day to best let your body recover. The following is a common (arguable of course) plan, and why that is good for most new folks and folks who are trying to learn their abilities.
Monday - REST DAY, or easy swim (this will show why when we get to Sunday)
Tuesday - Swim Speed Work and a Medium Intensity bike
Wed - Bike Speed work and a Medium Intensity Run
Thurs - Run Speed Work (this will beat up your legs) - Swim
Friday - LONG swim, followed by medium bike or run
Sat - LONG BIKE including speed work in the middle of the ride - Run if you got it. (Swim if you want, easy)
Sun - LONG RUN including speed work in the middle - (this will beat up your legs thus, earning you the "Day off" on Monday).
Swim any time and any day you can.
So, if you have a race on Sunday - and you are on this schedule, you take Monday off, or take your easy swim. Tuesday you get back to the swim speed work and maybe a bike ride.....
Make sense?
(Now, all the coaches can come in and tell me I am nuts - this is the basic program from a very popular coaching program that seems to work for many folks - no I will not name them).

Yeah, sometimes Big Zach goes out and rides the course a second time...sometimes he does not.
