Using race wheel on a trainer Quote | Reply

Like a lot of people, I do all of my weekday mileage on a trainer. I'm getting tired of swapping out my trainer tire for weekend rides so I thought of picking up a cheap spare rear wheel to dedicate to trainer use. Then I had an idea. My race wheels sit idle most of the year, why not put them to use on the trainer so that I only have to swap rubber once every couple of months?

Are there any possible issues with doing this? My race wheels are Hed Jets. If it's a big deal I'll just grab a cheap spare rear, I was just trying to avoid further clutter in my small apartment.

If you have nice qr skewers on your race wheels, swap em for some old beat up ones. The trainer can scratch them up a bit. Functionally not an issue but some people are particular about aesthetics.

I use my 'race wheels' all the time including on the trainer. It's no issue. Also with decent quality tyres I've not noticed increased wear over what I get outdoors - no 'black dust' by the brake unit at all. Make sure you're as vigilant with the tyre pressure as you would be if going out on the roads though.

Are there any issues with tubulars and heat build up on computrainer?

I've been using my race wheels on my trainer and have had no issues. As someone else said, I use some old beat up skewers though so I don't need to worry about those. But the wheels are not an issue.

Everyone knows your race wheels will explode if used on a trainer. Same will happen if used in a non-racing situation.

I think these other posters telling you it's ok are trying to play a trick on you.

I use tubulars but have no experience of the computrainer; just TACX.

I rode my zipp 808 with tangenete tubular all winter (powertap).

the only issue is that my tangente had a flat ridge worn into it that was big enough to eat dinner off of by the spring.
Replaced the tire for racing season. G-to-G
