Chatted with LA's swim coach Quote | Reply

I met him at a Whole Foods meet n greet yesterday (he's a former triathlete but also a passionate 100% plant food dude).

I told him I was a triathlete, just to break the ice, and then he brought up the issue about Lance. He then said this,

"It breaks my heart seeing what's happening to him. He was going to win Kona, hands down. Such a shame."

Well obviously his judgement is a little clouded by the whole 100% plant thing.

This may have been the best thing to happen to him. If the case falls apart and he gets let go, for years there will always be a 'what if' element to his triathlon career.

I dont think he would have won Kona, there is a laundry list of triathetes that win a race or 2 and look unbeatable for Kona and just dont show up when the big boys compete.

A few weeks ago at a Spokes/Trek sponsored event, I talked to a Trek rep, who knew Lance, and biked with Lance. The rep had nothing but nice things to say about Lance. His comments were genuine. We both lamented about the doping cloud and agreed that the Haters are just jealous of Lance Armstrong’s success.

As a side note, I had a triathlete friend fighting cancer and Lance personally reached out to her and gave her courage during her struggle. I remember him telling her to "listen to her doctors. . . "

Lance has done more good than most.

As a vegetarian, I'm offended. As a human being, I find that hilarious :)

Is he the guy who got Lance to eat "vegan" (except for dinners, hence the quotes)?

That's my guess as well. I think I remember seeing a tweet or two from LA about Rip and his diet book.

Oh he was also a good friend to one of the rare riders to speak out about doping, showing strong moral compass here:

such a shame about Kona.

Thank you for sharing and I respect what you say.

I read the article and don't see how Armstrong destroyed this guy's career.

I did see that: "In April 2006, the defamation charges were dropped."

Lance helped my friend and that's why I defend him. Also, no one has proven yet that he's guilty after many, many years of trying. I say enough is enough.

He sure isn't perfect but I think it's still safe to say he's done a lot of good (probabaly more good than bad).

Wasn't Simeoni an admitted doper? Why would you want him to win a stage????

I don't think you are well informed on his history or the scope of the USADA investigation if you believe that. It isn't just about Lance, it is about Ferrari, Bruyneel, and others that were a huge part of institutionalizing doping in the sport for years, and are still active in the sport.

Nah, you will notice the same, OCD type posting from me when people are wrong about wheel weight inertia as when people are wrong about lance. I just hate wrongness!

I'm just posting some history of our man Lance here. The kind of guy who bridges up to your break with the yellow jersey on if you have testified about who supplied your doping products to you when you get caught doping.

Make of that what you will.

I'm sad by your opinion of Lance, but I still respect what you say.

I agree that I'm not as informed as you, but at the end of the day, I hope Lance is found innocent.

man running gatorskins in a triathlon is about like not doing EPO in the 90s in cycling.

you will be down 20 watts and get your ass kicked, lol

Without video, it didn't happen. ;)

Again, this is interesting stuff, but is it evidence? And how do these guys know anyone is or isn't doping? Have they been a fly on the wall their entire career? Just presumptive and anecdotal, but again, this is the kind of stuff all athletes must put up with and why objective evidence is the only proper measure of a drug cheat and why no one should be suspended without at least a positive "A" sample.

If you have a competent drug program you should be able to weed out the cheats, right? Or, is that wrong? If it's wrong, then abandon drug testing. If it's right, then why haven't they caught LA and many many others. They like to talk about the ones they caught, but if you believe these stories, 90% of the peloton was all drugged up!

The truth of this whole sad episode is that few people want to face up to the fact that drug wars don't work, and that we are victims of our own shortsightedness and Puritanism.

Again, I oppose any drug usage unless the drugs are doctor prescribed for a real medical condition and not solely to enhance competitiveness.

Thanks for the post, Jack. You are an almost endless source of biking info and a real asset on this board.

Re: Chatted with LA's swim coach [Robert] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

Well Simeoni's testimony alone was only that Ferrari gave him doping products. Nothing more.

At that point we would know that Simeoni worked with Ferrari, who provides doping products, and that Lance worked with Ferrari, and paid him a LOT of money.

But that could just be for training plans. $400,000 training plans.

But then Lance put his yellow jersey at risk to punish Simeoni for testifying. That is...interesting, and I think, speaks to his character. Some people see it as good - loyalty. Others, not so good.
