I agree with everyone else’s sentiments about Ryan and his crew – great job guys and gals! And congrats to everyone who toughed out those conditions!

It’s because of Ryan and his crew that we brave the heat, humidity, wind, sleep on the ground, subsist on protein bars and Gatorade/Red Bull/Beer (and a little moonshine…don’t ask), damage musical equipment and electronics playing in the direct sun, and earn the ire of a few unfortunate souls who insist on setting up chairs to spectate right in front of the stage before they see us haul giant subwoofers and guitars out of the trailer.

But working with Ryan’s crew and seeing our friends race (and smile/dance/cheer as they pass us) on our home-town course makes it all worth the effort. Plus we had the added bonus of spending 24-hours inside Carnie Camp Lines, which was certainly equal parts entertaining and educational. I’d tell you all about it (see moonshine reference above) but we’re bound by a Carnie Confidentiality agreement.

But Ryan’s right – he and some of his crew penned some lyrics last week hoping that we’d play this song around the campfire….but always up for a challenge we took it one step further and went into the studio with 24-hours to spare and got this one down on tape for the records right before we packed the trailer and headed to Lawrence.

Link below to download and enjoy – nice work on the lyrics by Ryan, Tommy, and crew!

Congrats to everyone who raced on Sunday...it was a tough day out there but you all toughed it out and had fun while doing it!

Also...thanks for the kudos to our team...it is appreciated. Somebody mentioned that "people must enjoy working with the guy"...and I think that pretty much sums up the success that this event enjoys. The event was started as a Family event and remains that way...the success belongs to everyone involved. It's not work if you enjoy what you do and love the people your are with.

Over the years we have assembled a great team in Kansas...a team collected of other RD's that come into handle different parts of the event.

Swim - Zach Ukich and Kelsey Deery...and my two older brothers Jason and Shane.
Bike - Brian Myrick (RD of Muncie 70.3) - Bryan "Amazing" Mayes - Nick "The Prick" Gardner
Run - Andre Lapar (RD of San Juan 70.3 - Providence 70.3 - Miami 70.3)
Garbage - Tom Ziebart (Carnie Legend)
Site Supplies - Tommy "Kansas" Hutchinson
IronBand - Scott Kinner and Dave Schultz for everything they do. Watch out for their new soundtrack "Mammas don't let your Babies grow up to be Carnies"
Volunteer Director - Angie Zeller. (Most Valuable Carnie)
Registration - Camille Evans and Erin Erickson...and my Mom. A thankless job...these are the people that deal with all of the tri-baby tantrums;)
Announcer/Sound - Dave & Melinda Downey. Boulder County Communications. Best Event Sound company in the country.
Transition - Glenn "The Godfather" Bohannon. He sets the mood for the entire event!

Thanks again,
Ryan

Ryan, first off great race. Very well run, organized.

But I wanted to give a special shout out to the lady you had a bike tech support race morning.

In T1 while filling my tire, the rear tubular blew out at the valve. Normally not an issue. But when I removed the wheel, the whole rear cassette and free hub fell off the wheel. That was a major problem.

I went and showed her...she got my race #, and wave #, told me to go swim, and if she could get it fixed she would...and she'd have it on my bike.

While waiting for my wave I saw her race up to T1 with my wheel in one hand and hub/cassette in the other. I saw her right before I had to go swim and she as putting on my spare tube, so I knew it would be ready to ride.

I had to be careful turning on an unglued tube, and was wary of the wheel, but finished the race with no bike issues after that.

So HUGE kudos and thanks to her. I was so wide-eyed and freaked out I never got her name...she was so busy I doubt she got mine. But I was hoping for the chance to share the story and how awesome she was!!

Beach boy, did she have dark, short, hair? I know she was wrenching down there. If it was her she is a local bike tech at Elite Cycling in Leawood, KS. She is good.

We worked with Elite Cycling all weekend, they did a fantastic job at the expo and on race day. They pulled double duty on race day by not only providing on-course support but also helping with SAG as well. Jeff and his crew did an awesome job. Brian Myrick

Tina....probably was her. I ran into another athlete who was getting ready to drop out of the race when they broke a spoke…Tina got it securely wrapped around another spoke for her so she could finish the bike leg. Nice service!

It is the same crew at Ironman Branson 70.3. That is equally a great race.

Ditto on Kansas and the crew. FYI Ryan is putting on a race in September in Kansas City - check it out: http://runbluesnbrews.com. It's a first year race and as you know, it's so important to get athletes the first year. It's a 10 Miler, 5K and relay - not a tri, but thought I'd put it out there.

Branson is also another of his great races.

Yeah, Once as I swam past one of the motor boats I got a mouthfull. But I was so greatful they were there because I used the boats to help me sight the direction we were to swim that I didn't think to much of it. I had plenty of other more pressing things to worry about (waves, chop, white caps). I got really confused when the the return bouys were orange and I was looking for yellow. That caused a second or two of brest stoke to re-orient myself. In all honesty the swim didn't bother me as much as the wind on the bike cooked me and the sun on the run sauted me.

That was my third time at Kansas and I love it. Great race, great people. After everything that we went through on Sunday my only criticism seems so inconsequential but how do you not have T-Shirts for people at packet pickup?
I was told there were no mens Medium shirts on Sat afternoon, so I added my name to list of people to supposedly have one sent. Ok, no problem. But as I was funneled from race registration to the WTC expo next door, I happen to see plenty of Mens Med shirts for sale. I understand those were different but it just felt strange.

Anyway, I'll be back next year, no matter what the weather.
Thanks again

Ryan Robinson. Great RD. I believe it is ryan.robinson@ironman.com I was told by Lisac that they even had to turn away one of her friends who came to volunteer. People must like working with the guy. Every race I have done with him as RD has been first class all around.

Ryan is awesome, as is his crew! (esp Z!)
Sorry I couldn't make it this year. I do think I need to get back next year, to keep Lisa company, if nothing else! :) Plus, Toto needs to get off his fat ass and train.

Love,
Dorothy

This was my first 70.3 also. Fantastic event! Special thanks to Shane Robins and his mother (sorry, I didn't get a name. Not positive I have Shane right please correct me if I'm wrong). She called me on Sunday evening to let me know they had the wetsuit I had left hanging on the rack in T2. Shane got it back to KC so my wife could pick it up. If I'm not mistaken, it is Ryan's brother possibly? Regardless, awesome people, awesome race, great venue, and I'm pretty sure I'll be back to get whipped again in 2013. I'm going to make it a point to do these guys races when I can.

Now, if I can find the swim bag I left, and my sunglasses that fell out of my jersey pocket in the campground, I'll be golden. Considering by the time I finished, I didn't notice the yellow brick road, Dorothy or the Scarecrow I'm pretty happy I remembered my bike.

Weather be damned, I had a great time.

Yep...it was probably my Mom and my brother...sounds like something they would do. My mom still works way too hard on the event.

They love the race. It has been a pretty cool experience for our family.

Couldn't agree more. The whole T-shirt shortage thing is ridiculous and unacceptable. Absolutely drives me crazy.

I was almost embarrassed to post a race report on this one because I thought I swam like a little girl but after reading everyone elses posts it seems I should not let this swim bother me and chalk one up to the conditions. The race report is up at www.dreambigjp.net I echo the same thoughts of others on here...extremely tough day and if you made it through KS 70.3 as your first one there is nothing you can't accomplish! Congrats to all who made it through this one. I also would like to give a shout out to the sprinklers on the run course...life savers! Keep up the great work guys and know this KS 70.3 experience will make the next one that much more enjoyable...hopefully! DREAM BIG!
