Powertap G3 troubleshooting

Reply
I purchased a powertap G3 hub recently and am having some problems.
Essentially my Garmin is picking up the device. However, power is being read as 0. Cadence will mostly be zero with the occasional jump to the proper amount.
I have:
- Replaced the core with a new core
- Updated my Garmin
- Replaced the Battery
- Changed to a different Cassette
- Changed the O ring to a new one
- Tried a different Garmin
I'm running out of ideas. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue?

Not sure if you did the firmware update? Mine basically ate batteries until I did this - - as in by the time I got the bike home from the shop where I bought the G3, the batteries were dead. The firmware update has cured it.

You have to get it through power agent.

Mine went out on my second ride on the new hub today. Checked the firmware and it is up to date. Replaced the battery and it is working again.

Call Saris on Monday and they will have you go through some additional steps that will insure that it gets updated.I had to do the same thing.

Just so I understand this... the G3 eats internal hub batteries, and you need a firmware update to fix this? How do you hook up the hub to update the firmware?

so my G3 hub has a mini usb port on the inside. I was hoping we where discussing the same hub. i just bought it in March of this year and have gone through 3 batteries thus far. I have downloaded poweragent for my Mac but it does not recognize my Garmin 500 or my hub. If i use my wifes Dell it tells me my hub has the most recent firmware, version 16.021. I can not find anywhere online that tells what the most recent version is. i was told by cycleops that the update fixed the battery draining problem. I just keep buying more CR 2032 batteries and WalGreens loves me for it. They also sell Coca-Cola in the bottle with real sugar so its a bitter sweet trip!

I took the wheels to the shop where I bought them---they did the update for me so I cannot help you out.
Since the update, they've been great.

I had the same problem with a demo unit. Exactly the same problem. The Saris rep did something to it in person. Something to the effect of something not being seated correctly, but I didn't watch what he was doing closely. Not sure if this is covered by your new O-ring/new core.

im saying "NO", i dont think the cable came with it. its the same mini usb that my Droid cell uses though. i can get poweragent to recognize the hub when i use our Dell computer and have registered it with cycleops when i thought i did the update a month ago. The question i have is has anyone else done the firmware update at home to thier G3 hub and do you know what version it says it is. i made contact with customer service and they said that version 16.021 was not the mose recent but poweragent says differently. Their service rep also shipped me the wrong hub tool to remove the end cap to get to the usb port and the wrong end caps to replace the one i lost. Its like they dont have their stuff together with these new hubs.

It's not a solution to the root problem, but you can buy the CR 2032 batteries online for less than $1 each through amazon with free shipping. Much better vs. $3 or so at Wagreens.

Talked to Eric with CycleOps support today. Their determination is that the hub is not actually eating batteries, rather it is going to sleep and not waking up. He said to take the battery out, wait a minute, then put it back in. He acknowledged that obviously you can't do this during a ride, and this is their number one issue right now. I will follow up here with any updates after riding my G3 this week and giving feedback to Eric. Their Customer Support is good!

Have you checked the raw torque reading? I suspect your hub is dead and needs to be sent back for service.

Just wondering if Cycleops has resolved the battery problems with the new powertaps?
