the short answer is i missed a podium on the swim.

Got CLOBBERED about 150m, elbow to right behind ear. saw the little yellow flashes for about 30sec and then I was a little passive from then to the swim exit. My normal 1500m non-wetty swim is ~24:30 to 25 flat, I was 27:20 or so.

Rode as best i could without being a complete ass to the 70+ folks I passed for a 1:12 or 1:13 I think? Crazy how that 2min of swim time would have likely also yielded 1min of faster bike split (i sat behind MANY people for 10-40sec at a time).

Ran sort of on auto-pilot as I knew the race was lost. high 40:XX I think?

13th overall, 5th in 40-44. Maybe 2:19 something?

The only real silver lining is that my athlete Craig Evans had a stellar race for 2nd Elite Male.

Wish i could give you some major pointers on how to ride over the ruff stuff, but i really dont have the chops on the bike right now (1:17 on Sat). I have found that nothing beats time on the trails and learning what tire pressures work best for you. I came from a roadie background, so i use to have big engine with little skill. The skills have improved, but still a ways to go.

I did find an immediate improvement when i switched from my 26 to a 29er. I can just ride over things with speed that i tried to avoid on the 26.

The race went ok for me. 23 and change in the water, 1:17 on the bike and 40:xx on the run for 12th overall and 4th in the age group (30-34). With my current fitness level, i cannot complain. But was pretty evident that a lot of work needs to be done to compete with the top guys. Getting your ass handed to you by 8 min by age group winner was an eye opener.

huge props to Craig as well. been racing/training with him for years. amazing that he was a 215ish lbd out of shape swimmer 6-7 yrs ago and now barely got beat by Conrad. could not be happier for him.
