I've seen the mapmyride data, but I don't trust that...because last weekend, I went on a ride in an unfamiliar area....The ride was supposed to have 10% max, and I encountered a 15-20%wall that lasted a long time.

What types of % gradient would be expected on the big climbs? sustained, average...etc.

MapMyRide SUCKS. Most of their elevation data is based on longer runs of distance, as well as I think miss a lot of the short or small climb. I saw a long time ago where MMR might say something had 600 feet of climbing, and elevated corrected data from my Garmin was 4x that. Granted the Garmin tends to skew higher, MMR greatly misses a lot of the climbs I find, especially when it comes to slope and steep sections

Anyone going for a Vegas slot or Lake Placid entry? i wonder what time will be need to qualify for one of these this year. If I can get sub 5(~4:55), do I stand a chance getting one of these in the 35-39 age group (Male)? I imagine the Lake Placid slots will roll down...I bet some of the competitive age groupers are already signed up for it. Thoughts?

I am not sure how many slots there are for M35-39 AG for Vegas but I think you will need to throw down a 4:45 of lower to qualify but I guess it really depends on who shows up.

Plus your gonna have to beat me ;0)

Depends on who shows up.

Each age group gets one slot. M35-39, 40-44,45-49, 50-54 will have 2 slots. F35-39 and F40-44 will probably have 2 slots. Given only 30 total. So basically the only way to be sure is win your age group or second place....35-39 or 40-44 men MAY have 3 slots depending on who is the largest age group.

Unless you are the speed of a slow pro, don't go to Mooseman for a Vegas slot. Go to Syracuse...they have 100 slots vs Mooseman with 30.

I don't know the percentages, but that climb kicks up pretty sharply right at the top for 100-200 yards or so, then you get some speed up very quickly before that right hand turn.

True....but in this case it might roll down far enough that I can get a spot. I figure not everyone is going to want to race it, 2-3 spots will go to Las Vegas, and I bet some will already be registered. Last year there were 17 people under 5 hrs in the 35-39 age group.

I rode part of the course this weekend. Another thing to be aware of, some sections of the roads (particularly in the last few miles) have pretty brutal surfaces. For anyone riding the course in the next week, be cautious on Cass Mill Road. While the entire stretch is rough, there is one section where you hit a nice descent and get some decent speed (eclipse 25-30 mph without pedaling). However, as you descend there is a section of the road that curves to the right. When you hit the curve, there is a massive section of road on the right that has been washed away/is potholed. It takes up about 2/3 of the right side of the 2 lane road and must be about a foot "long". I was fortunate enough to have slid to the middle of the street and just missed it. Had I been more toward the right shoulder, I would have hit it head on and seriously doubt I'd be in any condition to write this post. I didn't get a chance to grab a great look at it, but it was there and definitely treacherous. In any event, I hope it will be blocked off on race day, but anyone riding prior to should be aware.

I think Saturday's bike course is different than Sunday's.

Great point - I should have clarified. I rode what appears to be the International Distance course. I used the course as mapped on the website for Saturday's race. Not sure if that is still a good course and if the 70.3 ends differently.

Spot on with many of the comments. Did the race last year and in glancing at the file for the course (Garmin with corrections enabled), it looks like 3300' of climbing. The "hill" climbs about 950' across 3 miles. Take heed of the warnings regarding the descent. We went up to preview the course last year prior to the race and glad we did. Quite a few frost heaves in the roadways for the descent and if you are not accustomed to aggressively picking your lines in advance it is easy to get caught up and make a mistake on that course. To each his own on what to pick for a gearing strategy, but as one poster put it... if your Watts/kg ratio is below 4 choosing a compact with a 28 is not a bad idea. At the least you will save yourself for the run.

Good luck.

The New Specialized Wind Tunnel
Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
Yes, Game Changer
