HIM nutrition

Ill be doing my first IM (Lake Placid) in July, and I think I have a good idea what I need to do nutrition- wise. I'm also doing Mooseman 70.3 and I'm a little lost about how to treat it as far as nutrition is concerned. Do you take what you'd normally drink/ eat on the bike for an IM but only for 55 miles? For half marathons I normally just have water from water stops and maybe a gel or two.

What you need to do is practice...either using what they are supplying at the race or carry what you have used in training......it's all about trying different nutritional practices and in different situations.......make sure it works both in training and in race situation!

Whatever you plan on using for Lake Placid is what you should use for Mooseman, the type that is, not the quantity or the same intake ratio/per hour. You should already be experimenting with your nutrition during your long rides and runs to make sure that things are working properly with your body. Do some research and see what they will be serving on the run course at Lake Placid and make sure you are using that, it is a little harder to carry a lot of nutrition for the run compared to the bike, so being course dependant is normally a better option for the run. Also, don't forget to take into a account how long you will be out there. Best of luck with both races, if you take a look at my blog I broke down my nutrition for both IM Korea and Kona from last year, if you have any questions based on what I wrote let me know.

I am doing the same combo; asking about nutrition is very individual. Just practice during your rides/runs. Sounds like your first go around for HIM and IM search around

It is my first time around. Thanks for the thoughts. I've been using the Ironman perform that'll be on course at LP. Hate it, but no big deal.

Here is what I have done in the past:
Breakfast 4:00am
-Banana, Bagel, Ensure and sip sports drink
Pre-Start 5:45am
-1 Gel (100 Calories)
Bike
-32oz water/Infinti (My own) + mixture of water and gatorade from course for more hydration
-Mix of Cliff Blocks and Gels around 600 calories (people typically do 250-300 calories an hour on the bike; I like a little more)
Run
-3 Gels (400 Calories)
I am around 6'1 180-185 and around a 5hour HIM guy but this year looking at under 5hours.

I would think you are going to need more than just water and a couple gels to get you through the run, especially if its hot. Water has a bad habit of flushing salt out of your system, but there should be an electro drink at the stations. As stated before, practice. Utilize the bike portion to consume gels, bars, gu etc. Good luck and kill it!!!

Never mentioned anything about just water on the run.
Like I said nutrition is very personal. I only take 3 gels on my 1/2 marathon (HIM) of course I drink a mix of gatorade/water. (Mooseman probably wont be hot because it is in beginning of June in NH.)

Did you actually read the original thread?

He's referring to how you replied to a specific poster. Like I'm replying to you. See how the title of my post includes "[Thecatch83]?" That means I'm replying to you and generally addressing something you said. It would be confusing if I replied to you, but addressed someone else's post, which is what you did. It's not that confusing a system to understand. When you added your opinion regarding the OP, you should have gone to the OP and hit the "reply" button from there.
No need to get snippy.

I carefully planned how much caffinated energy gel to mix in my flask then inadvertently jettisoned it on a rough bridge seam 3 miles into it. Then I relied only on the sport drink provided on the course. Not ideal. Next time, I'm taping a back-up energy gel onto my bike.

You are a potential poster image for my whole kick on "Arriving Unprepared". But, you have time. What you need to do is use in your training EXACTLY what you plan to use on race day. So, if you plan to partake in ANY of the food supplies other than water on race day - train with that. If you plan to take the Gatorade, use the same flavor even. I would take my own nutrition if it was me (Also InfinIT)...but I make damn certain that I have enough and plenty in my Special Needs bags just in case I drop a bottle or what ever.
A half Marathon is a far cry from IM, IM is a far cry from an open Mary....
If you do not train with what you plan to race with you are simply asking for trouble. Add to that, if your training volume and time spent does nto offer you all of the potential situations to test your nutrition - you are not training enough.

I've done what you did for a half marathon - water and one gel (but had a liter and half of water two hours before the event, along with fresh lemon/orange juice with coconut water an hour out).
For a HIM, I'm going with what my system actually wants, which is something savory/salty. I now use four bottles on the bike (when training) when doing a three or more hour ride followed by an hour and a half run. One of those bike bottles is filled with an Imagine Foods vegetable soup (Corn chowder, potato, tomato, etc.). The key for me is having something salty. At this distance, my body cannot tolerate, nor wants, anything sweet, whether in solid or liquid form.
