Agreed. While the plush ride is impact forgiving, the super-cushioning ended up feeling mushy and slow to me. Also, the upper on the Bondi B does seem to result in a hot shoe for me. Sample size n=1 so take it for what its worth.

Both a friend and I bought the bondi b's last week and tested them out on a 1/2 marathon this weekend after running two 5 mile runs in them during the week. No joint pain whatsoever, and little if any jarring impact felt during the race. What we both have noticed however is that our quads are killing us the following day, more than any quad pain either of us have felt after a marathon or ironman. What gives? Other than this quad pain I really like the shoes, just dont really wanna deal with this pain after every race. Any info on whats going on? thanks in advance for any help

For me it was the hamstrings. I was very sore the first day and it took 4-5 runs until my body got use to the new footstrike. Since the shoe forces you to run mid-foot strike with its rocker shape, your muscles are being taxed in a different way. also, remember, the shoe has only a 4mm heel drop with no stabilizing foam or medial posting - this will also impact your stride. Give the shoe a few more runs and they'll feel better. I still only use them for recovery runs and slow long distance runs.

They run small, size up by 1/2 for the bondis, also are a little narrower in forefoot than asics and brooks. Only deal I have seen is on theclymb.com and that was a few months ago

For the Bondi B, most folks like to wear a 1/2 size up compared to Brooks, Nike, and Asics. You can also get them from Boca Hawaii in Honolulu.

Interesting/positive review. Being huge in the ultra-running community, it would make sense for the Hoka's to make it's push in the IM market...less fatigue/pounding. I recently raced in Oceanside 70.3, and it looks like Newton owns the market now...bright colors everywhere! Hokas and Newtons...same niche??
Has anyone purchased the latest Bondi B model? Did Hoka fix their sizing and make them more true to fit? runningwarehouse.com carries them now and a reviewer stated that the new model/color may be more true to size now.

the bondi b for 2012 is now, reportedly, true to size, which brings it in line with their other shoes.
this shoe kills it. this is THE ironman shoe, bar-none. bar-none. interestingly, the stinson evo - their new trail shoe - has "triathlon features", like a loop on the heel and quickie laces. put these features in the bondi b (which in my view is the better motif for triathlon) and you have the world's best tri shoe, and the best tri shoe ever made, esp for 70.3 and IM racing.
now, here's a positive/negative shout out. mark rouse, of
runners high n tri
, based in chicagoland's burbs, maintains one of the half-dozen best technical running stores in north america. the bondi is the newton killer. if you sell a lot of newtons, this shoe is the next evolution in low-ramp shoes. you're known to be the seller of next-generation shoes, mark, and this is it. mark, you know about this shoe, why do you not sell this shoe?
mark, you're not alone, i think some of the very best technical running stores that cater to triathletes have tried to show loyalty to brands investing in triathlon, like k-swiss and avia. hoka one one has no budget and so has not made this investment. they don't advertise with anyone, us included. but, they just make this red smokin' hot shoe. so, just based on the shoe - the product - this cannot
not
be in tri specific footwear stores.
when someone who is a very good runner, and holds the purse strings, tries this shoe, that's another story. then the shoe comes in. i sent a pair to cid cardoso, who's a great runner as many slowtwitchers know (esp those in his AG). cid ran in them for a week, and then called up and ordered deep.
so, to specialty running stores, all 700 of you in the u.s., here's the naked truth: you represent a small minority of the technical footwear sales sold by the flagship brands. i don't see evidence they care much about you. if you want a shoe that's a light year better for serious runners than nike, adidas, and asics, and you don't want to have to compete with big boxes - who these shoe companies care about more than they care about each of you - then, here's the shoe that god made for your store. esp if you sell to triathletes, the customers god made for your store.

Got about 400 miles in my Bondi B's until I shelved them. In February I purchased the new Stinson Evo's.
The Bondi B's are about an oz lighter (40 grams in size 12). Surprisingly lightweight and the cushioning is unbelievable without feeling overly mushy. I found them to be a great investment for long runs over 20 miles and for recovery runs. Therefore,
for now on my shoe quiver will always contain one Hoka product
.
I heard that Hoka fixed there sizing issues from 2011, when everyone was encouraged to size up 1/2. My one complaint for the Bondi B's (and since fixed on the Evo's) is the excessive wear of the outsole - particularly in the mid-foot strike area. Because of this, I used my Bondi's mostly on natural surfaces.
I prefer the fit of the Evo's over the Bondi's and again - the outsole on the Evo's is wearing much better. The "trail lugs" are really no different from Nike's waffle design so I've exerpeiced zero issues running on pavement. However, if the Bondi's "pavement-specific" tread is a key selling point please note that the Evo's will also have a "Tarmac" verison available very soon.

I just ordered a pair.
My favorite shoes of all time were a very cushioned shoe, the Asics Excalibur GT, so maybe these will have a similar feel?
I'll post my results.

I got the Hoka Stinson Evos used and absolutely love them. I am very open minded and have a lot of different types of shoes. They are the best and I do get way less leg fatigue than I do with other shoes. To be fair, I do not run in them all the time because of price and I like them for my middle and long distance runs and not for speed. For speed, I am using the Brooks adrenalines. Nice review and I think all of your points are correct. I'm also surprised they are hard to find.

i was an adrenaline addict for years. every new iteration. as much as i liked that shoe, for me the bondi b smokes the adrenaline every which way. speed in particular. i could never race a 5k or 10k in the adrenaline. but the bondi is both my training shoe and my race shoe, all the way down to 5k.
i come from a running background, staring in HS, and i'm 55 now, so i've been at this for awhile. i don't say the bondi is my race shoe because i'm not a runner and am not familiar with flats, and what makes a good flat. but i can't run in a 7oz or 8oz shoe, because i need structure (i'm a hyper overpronator), and because i'm not a lightweight. even as a sophomore in HS i was mid 150s, and i'm mid 160s now. i get leg sore in light flats. but i can tough it out for 5k. still, the bondi is a faster shoe for me, because i'm much fresher in the last mile.

Thanks for the info. I am a super pronator and wear orthotics and they have really helped me. The hoka's are still pretty light with the orthotics and the leg fatigue difference is significant. I may have to get some Bondi's now....

The tongue is pretty stiff and digs into the top of my foot a little. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing if I enjoy them on road runs from work as much as the trail runs out of my back door...

As far as sizing I can say I've ordered my Hokas Stinson B in size 13 (all my other running shoes are size 13) and they fit perfectly. They offer a lot of room for the toes even with thicker socks. Sadly I cannot run in my new shoes because of a cycling crash I had last week ...
The Mafate 2 low are in size 13.5 ( I thought that might be a smart choice as I wear thick merino socks in the winter when trail running) but they also seem perfect with my usually thin summer socks.
They are really lightweight.
I hope that I'll be running a lot soon when my injuries allow it.

I've been running in the Bondi B's for over 6 months now, and i would not wear anything else. It is truly the 1st shoe i ever put on and just went wow. Good to hear that they have figured out the sizing, as the ones i have are too small, and i went up a 1/2 size. Time for a new pair. My father in law who is a walker only was having hip and knee issues, so i put him onto this shoe, and he has been pain free ever since. This shoe is breathing life back into some old legs, just wish i owned a piece of the company..
