Toronto War on Bikes?

Is this for real? This guy is the Mayor?
"And what I compare bike lanes to is swimming with the sharks. Sooner or later you're going to get bitten," said Ford speaking in 2010 as a Toronto city council-member.
"And every year we have dozens of people that get hit by cars or trucks. Well, no wonder: roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks, not for people on bikes.
"My heart bleeds for them when I hear someone gets killed, but it's their own fault at the end of the day."

He sure is. Just last night he physically threatened a reporter and forced him to give up his cellphone and recorder.
During his election campaign he suggested all running races be run in local parks so that no roads would need to be closed, since road races are just part of the 'war on the car'.

he also apparently figures that, as mayor of a city an hour away, he should have some say in who represents another city in provincial government:
http://www.thestar.com/...-waterloo-byelection
TL/DR version: a local MPP retired, and ford is quoted as saying "i will do everything in my power to make sure a 'certain party' doesn't win" the by-election since a liberal taking the seat would give the provincial liberals a majority government.
cheers!

Ford is an arrogant F+($. I could have add fat but that is a gigantic slur against all overweight people. While I don't live in Toronto I am embarrassed that Torontonians have to put up with him, even if they did vote for him.

At least Cherry is old enough to be a Senior and perhaps have a bit of dementia as an excuse. Oh, and he can be entertaining.
Ford, on the other hand is just demented.

Well, let's not forget the Beamers, Benz' and Audit folks. More than a third of the folks I ride with have pick-ups.

Edit - Forgot to mention that I got buzzed by a Prius yesterday with a 26.2 sticker on the rear window.

Most distressingly, if an election were called today (okay, maybe earlier this week), there's a good chance he would be reelected.

Suck it up Toronto because Montreal has recently been voted as #1 in North America and #8 in the world as a bike friendly city and they're building even more bike lanes. The list went to fifty and Toronto wasn't on it.

Let's be honest - T.O. is the place the rest of the country loves to hate. I lived in Toronto for eight years. Left years ago when it was even still liveable and have no regrets and now live in rural eastern Ontario. The only time I ever go there any more is to go to the airport when one of my kids is flying in from BC. I always call a T.O. visit my cure for the small town blues.:-) Ironically, I love Montreal and try to get there as often as possible.

The fact remains that despite this, we had Yonge Street shut down on April 22 for the Yonge Street 10K, another Yonge Street shut down this weekend for the Toronto marathon, followed by yet another Yonge Street shut down the following weekend for the Sporting Life 10K. For those who don't know Toronto, Yonge Street is the main drag. Even as a runner I find this pretty damn absurd.
On June 3 you've got the Gardiner/DVP (the only two highways in and out of downtown) closed for the Ride for Heart.
On July 22 you've got the Gardiner/DVP closed for the Toronto Triathlon.
In October you have chunks of downtown + all of Lakeshore closed for the 2nd and larger marathon held in the city.
Pretty hard to argue there has been any follow-through on that. There are actually more road closures for races than when he took office.
Question for folks in other large cities - is this number of road closures for running/cycling normal, above or below average?
(off-topic - This latest escapaade with the reporter peeping over the fence and the mayor reacting by charging him in his sweat pants is exactly why the sadistic side of me was hoping he would win the election. You couldn't ask for better entertainment. All of our politicians are so full of shit that we might as well enjoy some drama.)

Rob Ford also said that marathons shouldn't be run on streets, they should be run in parks where they don't disrupt drivers.
Think he's being shrewd in allowing all these races so that the public will get fed up and think: Maybe Rob Ford was right about getting these races off the roads?
It would be a devious ploy on his part

Not sure I understand the issue with this. If I have someone peering into my backyard over a fence, and I have kids at home....you bet your ass I will be doing something about it.

I live in Toronto. I didn't vote for Ford and I wish he hadn't won. He says some idiotic things at times. HOWEVER, he is 100 times better than the guy he replaced. David Miller ran this city into the ground. I couldn't wait to see someone else in office.

I think the only reason Rob Ford won the mayor job was because he was running against George Smitherman who had been quite incompetent in Ontario as provincial health minister and then energy minister under McGuinty. Also his open gayness would have cost him votes with some conservative voters. If anybody else besides Smitherman had run against Ford it's not unconceiveable that you'd have a different mayor.
