I cannot seem to reply to your pm on ST. I just joined the forum today, not sure why?

Anyway, other ways to contact you? Facebook? emails?

That sounds like a great and easy fix to that problem.
When I switched to Dura ace components I added a chain catcher to the FD and that fixed my chain overthrow on my SC 7.

FYI, I had this exact same thing happen on my 7.2. The LBS looked at it for quite awhile and figured out that when the chain is being moved from the large to small chain ring, the chain bounces slightly. With the limited clearance, this caused the chain to hang up on the rear brake pad bolt and it gets grabbed by the crank/chain ring. They ended up switching to a set of pads with a rounded allen head bolt to alleviate the issue.

Thanks - I'll take a look at that.

I know that the speed bottle works best on the seat tube and a round bottle works best on the downtube.

Giving some more thought to bottle setup. I run a torpedo mount between the bars. Would a behind-the-seat single bottle setup like Chris Lieto's (or the Xlab Delta Wing) be more aero than a frame mounted bottle? I would assume the rider shields the bottle.

Probably...likely even...but ergonomically extremely difficult to use, particularly if it's not a sideloader.

That's why I was thinking something like the Xlab Delta Wing would work better from an ergonomic standpoint since the bottle is not laying flat like that pic of Lieto but more at a 45 degree angle.

I use a bottle between the bars, a speed bottle on the seat tube, and another horizontal bottle behind the seat. I use this setup on long training rides when I need to carry a lot of water (I still end up refilling at some point at the local 7-11 or whatever). The aeroness may be somewhat irrelevant to me, since I lose the rear bottle for races and use the speed bottle for nutrition then swap out on course water between the aero bars. All that said, it is cumbersome to make the switch with the rear bottle. There is no easy and aero way that I have found to do it. That's one of the reasons I bag that bottle on race day. However, with a little practice you can become proficient in the swap, but expect to be sitting straight up when you do it.

Of course, YMMV.

Re: [GMAN19030] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

I've got some time scheduled out at the FASTER wind tunnel May 31 and bottle placement is one thing I'm planning to experiment with. I typically race with a horizontal bottle between the aerobars and an aero bottle on the seat tube. One limitation of that is once the aero bottle is empty you are down to a single bottle unless you take the time to stop and refill it. In the past I've used it for concentrated nutrition with 500-800 calories and basically nursed it through the entire race. For IM I've stashed a second aero bottle in my special needs bag to replace it with. I'm assuming the aero bottle route is going to be the most aero so I'll end up keeping it but I'd like to have another option for fluids in addition to the arobar mounted round bottle - water and Gator. So the behind the seat option is something I want to experiment with and see if one config or the other makes a difference - completely horizontal or more angled.

I'll report back for sure. Doing the full fitting package as well. After talking with Paraic on the phone for about 20min last week I'm pretty impressed with their approach and technology.

Widen aero pads Trek SC 9 [In reply to] Quote | Reply

Does anyone ( Carl) know of a good method/product that would allow me to widen the aero pads without switching the extensions to the outside of the pillars? The pads are too narrow at their widest setting when the extension bars are placed inside the pillars and far too wide when placed outside.

Thanks

Hi raypratt

I wish we had an easy answer for you right now . In the past I've suggested looking for other manufacturers hardware which might fit on the end of the extensions and go wider but to my knowledge nobody has ever found any.

So even with the widest holes on the pads and the widest position on the brackets you still want to be wider? Sounds like like you are building a wind catcher :)

That's something I would be interested in also Raypratt.
I find them a little narrow and get uncomfortable on long rides. When I switch the pads to the outside of the pillars they seem to have an odd tilt inward.

Yes, with part #s that vary by model year and model. Your Trek dealer can find & order the correct one by drilling down to the appropriate combination of those two variables for your bike in the Dexter Techsite website.

Re: Widen aero pads Trek SC 9 [TH3_FRB] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

Hi Joel,

No , I find it much too wide with the extensions in the widest position. That is the problem , too narrow in the internal position and too wide in the external position. I need something that will allow me to extend the pads out while the bars are in the internal position. I used to use the Zipp Vuka extender on my old T3 Brezza setup for this purpose.

I am going to try the same Zipp part again but I need 2 extra J clamps for the pads ( on order at the moment ). I was just curious if anyone had also encountered this issue and arrived at a better solution.

Re: Widen aero pads Trek SC 9 [raypratt] [In reply to] Quote | Reply

I'm not even talking about flippong the clamps. The pad holders have 2 sets of mounting holes for width abd the bracketa also have 2different sets of holes for width. That gets the pads pretty wide without swapping the clamps. Something else to try is rotating the pad holders down which gives you a bit more space by not having as aggressive of a cup on the outside of the pads. I find that feels like it rollong my arms inward.

Hi Joel,

Are you referring to the SC9? My pad holders have 4 sets of holes and the j clamps also have 4 holes. I will try rotating the pad holders , I can see that might alleviate some of the pressure/discomfort. I am fairly big ( 6'2" , 195lbs) I find that my shoulders get quite sore on narrower setups.

Anyone a rear light on your SC? If so, which type and how did you mount it?
