I really hate aggressively non-competitive "racers."

I did a local race last weekend, nothing big, just a cheap 5k and 10k around a suburban neighborhood, and a shallow enough field that my 18:30 got me an easy 3rd in the 5k. Well, this morning I rode to my parents house to help with some yardwork and found them talking to some neighbors. Apparently the neighbors ran the 10k, and they were talking to my parents about it. When my mom mentioned that I ran the 5k the guy mention (in a dismissive tone) that 5ks are good too, to which my mom responded that I got a podium spot in the 5k. At this he seemed a little annoyed and his wife blurted out that they don't need to beat people to feel better about themselves.
This kind of annoyed me, and I'd just had a rough climb up to my parents place, so without thinking I quipped that of course they don't beat people, you have to be in shape to win a footrace. Of course this annoyed them and they made more remarks about "racers" before leaving, but it got me thinking about people who race but hate racing.
I've noticed this before, especially at the Ragnar relay I did last year, people who show up and then try to make everyone who wants to go fast and win fast feel bad about it, and it bugs the shit out of me. I have no problem with people who want to show up and have fun, or get a medal/t-shirt or whatever without being competitive, but what the Hell is up with paying for a race then talking down on people who actually want to race? Are some people really so self-conscious that they have to justify their own lack of ability by talking down to people, or is it really some weird competition is bad attitude that people have developed?

Everyone is at least a little jealous of someone faster/richer/better than themselves and some come off weird because of it.

LOL... that's awesome! Good for you!
Every year a couple friends and I do this really small spring 5k to benefit our local fire department and it has grown to the point that last year they had two separate starts for runners and for walkers/joggers. Well, a group of over-weight, sloppy, soccer mom walkers... with their pink leotards and Sketchers Shape-Up's got so pissed they told the fire department they were not going to come this year and not donate their $5 because they didn't get the "compete" against the guys running 16 minute 5K's (yes, it's hilly!).
To answer your question simply: Everyone who doesn't work for anything, feels like they're entitled to everything.

I'm not sure those who are slower all feel the way your parents neighbors do.
I'm MOP to BOP, but when I race I'm there to race mostly against myself.
Some folks think longer is better and more impressive (ie IM or Mary), and sounds they view that way.
Did they not train? How do you know how they trained?
Maybe your rough climb had you misunderstand their intent or Maybe it was their first race and they were bragging about it proud they got off the couch.
If you quipped what you said to me I'd be rather offended as it is quite judgmental.
Do you think folks that race really hate racing? I suspect they hate more that they hate being as slow as they are otherwise why sign up to race.

So, your mom brags about your racing exploits to her neighbors and the neighbors respond with a comment about their approach to racing. Who knows why they are annoyed, if they were, maybe they hear about your racing exploits a little too much from your mom. In turn, you insult their level of fitness. Did you then back up and chuck rocks at each other?

I wasn't there, so maybe you're right but from personal experience; the people he was talking to want to be looked at as impressive when they simply are not.
I race longer (simply because that's what I'm better at, I couldn't run a 16min 5K if I trained for it), so I run marys and IMs. My cousin runs a half mary and keeps saying, I ran a mary. I correct her and say, "You ran a half. You can't say marathon, that's twice the distance. It's a big difference." She will ALWAYS give me the "look" and act pissy. She wants to be looked at as impressive, which she is to the majority, just not to me.
So, I'm guessing those people made a quip because they felt superior and got pissed when he still looked better.

3rd is the second looser.
I can't stand when I show up to "race" triathlon and someone has their race wheels on, trisuit on, legs shaved and their aero helmet looking stealthy as hell and and the first thing out of their mouth is, "awwww, I'm just hear to train, take it easy and have fun today."

I know not all slower people feel that way, but these people were being straight up rude and condescending and it got worse when they heard that I did well. There was no misunderstanding here, they wanted me to know that they were better because they didn't compete. Coming straight off the bike just dimmed my internal filter and made me make a rude remark back to them.

You are CHOOSING to have this make you feel angry. Racing is different for everyone.

If you're getting the intended satisfaction out of your race experience, then neither of us is superior. (Of course, this assumes that you're not a pro and you're not racing for your paycheck.)

Good point! Some people start out with a defeated attitude; and in advance, they make excuses for their performance, maybe they lack some confidence.

At least people like us have Slowtwitch as a warm friendly place to find love and support.
(this shade of pink is for non-sarcastic warm sympathy)
Congrats on the podium! Your neighbors are lame and probably have a crappy sex life.
Now HTFU, get off the computer, go train to crush dreams in your upcoming race and next time use the search function....
