pointless...use the aid stations which as people mentioned are 1 mile apart. If anything, take small water bottle for the start only so can blow by the 1st few aid stations without getting tripped up...stay in the center and pass everyone

I do it mostly because the aid stations are usually crowded and with a Fuel Belt I can run past them and take water/coke if/when I need it. For a half I typically carry one 8oz bottle water and one 8oz bottle of flat coke unless it is a hotter day.

Having a FuelBelt on is your choice, and if it works for you then it is a good choice. There is some security in knowing you have your own nutrition on you whenever you may need it. If you are questioning wearing the belt but still want to have something during the run, why not consider this

Forget it.
You probably don't even need water, unless it is really hot and you are really slow.
There is some evidence that some carbohydrates in your mouth, even if spat out, boost performance.
I like to put a Sport Bean in my mouth to melt for this purpose. If you want something, put some kind of gel in a small gel bottle and squirt a bit in your mouth from time to time. You can squirt a sip a water from the aid stations in your mouth to wet your whistle, if you want.
The belt will only slow you down, unless you're Crowie.

I never eat anything for a half marathon. I only worry about food if a race is over 2 hours, otherwise, just water on the course.

One thing that hasn't been mention is if this is a "green" half marathon. I have done a couple of trail half marathons that didn't have any cups on the course. If you wanted water you had to bring your own bottle, when you ran out you could refill your bottle at the aid stations.

I have yet to do one of these races but if they do not have water in cups on the course, my first thought would be to not do the race. I do not carry anything with me during a run and have no desire to do this now because the latest fad is to call a race "green".

A couple of factors to consider
1. Temperature and humidity
2. Sweat rate
3. Distance between aid stations
4. Are you use to what they serve at the aid stations
I live and race in the tropics so for a half marathon I would consider bringing a fuel belt. When I'm in the US I usually don't bother...

The main reason to is if you need nutrition different than what is offered on course. Regardless of what people think on this forum, some runners take in fluids more than every 90 minutes.
I have only "raced" one half marathon, but it was pretty easy to grab cups at the aid station (which here are every 3 kms or so). And gels were offered at the 1/2 way point. I finished in 1:41. My wife though wants the security of a bottle with her which is fine (she likes to mix Gatorade and tea, which is obviously not a course option).

I use a fuel belt w/ 2-8 ounce bottle(1 w/ water, 1 w/ flat coke or flat red bull).
I do this for several reasons:
-I'm 172 lbs and my 1/2 marathon pace in low 6:40's or high 6:30's; based on my weight and fitness level, I sweat a lot, so it helps
-With my bottles, I cab slow down to a light jog and take sips, to do this with aid station cups I have to completely walk. Some people may not think this is a big deal, but the more you slow down the more effort you have to put out to get back to your ideal pace
-Aid stations can be crowded
-I like having my fluids on me for whenever I want them
Also,a fuel belt will not slow you down; I barely notice mine sometimes

don't worry about what the crowd would say, I've worn a fuel belt in a few halves but mainly as they were training runs for full's so wanted to make sure I was training as I would race. If I was running a half as a half I ight skip it but only if I knew what aid stations were like and what the weather was like, heat stress is not fun.

I usually use my fuel belt as well. I'm still doing a 1:35, so that's not too bad.
For me, there may be plenty of water on the course, but I just never get in enough water with those cups. I invariably try to rush it and the water goes down the wrong pipe. So with the fuel belt bottles, I avoid that and I just like taking sips a bit more frequently than many other people. Nice comfort for me in knowing that if I want it, it's there. If not, no big deal carrying one bottle.
I also take 1 gel. There are obviously lots of options for carrying that, but if I have my fuel belt, it goes in there too. I also will put in an enduralyte in case of heat/humidity.
Other than the slowtwitchers, no one will judge you.

Even in full marathons I wouldnt bother. Aid stations are close enough together to negate that need. I do, however, run with a pair of shorts that has a decent zipper pocket so I can stash two gels just in case I feel like I need some fuel other than gatorade (or whatever sports drink they have). Most aid stations wont have gels, but usually one on the course has them, so I like to carry a couple just in case. But that wont require a fuel belt, just a pocket.

i would say it is your call - you won't see people running for PR carrying them. That being said if it makes you comfortable then do it. If you go with out it make sure when you grab a cup pinch it together to make the opening small = easier to drink from

I don't own a fuel belt and usually graze the water stations. Got an HM in 2.5 weeks, but I'll probably go home after and take it easy. I did a 10k last month and didn't hit any of the water stops. Didn't want to stop. But I've learned, under certain conditions, if I don't hit the stops, I'll have a headache later.
That said, I'm thinking of taking this sport a little more seriously. If I want to raise my weekly mileage, I have to recover faster. Running the day after an HM. Maybe even something later that day. My running nutrition book says drinking a "sports drink" immediately after the run is key. If I'd need to mule it through 13.1 miles to have my Perpetuem available, I should do it. Maybe even slugging a Cytomax down around the ten mile mark. Gonna try it at some point.
The sports drink sites have a formula for before, during and after. So I assume that's what's formulated into those little bottles. Different concoctions for different times in the exercise.
I'm feeling burnt out today. Crashed at a crummy two miles yesterday. Guess that's why I'm in this thread. I need a change up.

I saw this in the Nutrition for Runners book and I've tried it and it works. A little Perpetuem as my body starts to really get into the exercise, helps. It fools my body into thinking nutrition is coming. No reason to hit the stored up stuff. I hit a little crisis, a little Perpetuem and the crisis passes. I get my daily mileage. But that's in training. A Race though, is different animal completely for me. So much adrenaline, it drowns out the minor concerns from deep within my body. But you should read it for yourself and try it.

Perpetuem is a bit heavy for the run. I would try and do something without protein if you want a sports drink

Is that right? I'm still working through all the different kinds. I should prolly buy smaller containers. Stuff starts getting old before I finish it. Cytomax goes down easier during the run. I had pretty good luck with the Endurox 4. I gotta do something to hold over 35mpw for a few weeks. Otherwise start feeling wasted.
