HIM TI Swimming Plan?? Quote | Reply

Here we are, my first post on ST!

Im a newbie triathlete, coming from running (newbie there too, picked it up 6 months ago - Marathon PB 3:12).

Im doing a HIM on September 1st and am looking for training suggestions. I think I know how to handle the running. I've been following the First Furman Plan and it's been working great for me.

I would like to find a swimming training plan that's in the same spirit - emphasis on high quality sessions rather than volume. In this regard, Total Immersion swimming really caught my attention as it seems it really focuses on proper technique.

So here is the question:

Do you guys know of any swimming plan with about 3 sessions / week that implements TI (or equivalent). The "less is more" of swimming plans?

Many thanks!

You will get specific TI training advice on the TI forum.
Best of luck training for your event.

What is your swimming background? Total Immersion is more of a stroke training type of thing than a full out training program, and the effectiveness of TI is the source of some debate.

For training, less is more gets you just that. Less rather than more. Search on here for the "Fishtwitch" threads and the monthly "Fish" program (pm tigerchik if you need help finding them), plenty of good workouts in those.

Thanks for the help - I'm fairly new to swimming too. I'm confident in water and I've been going swimming 2-3x / week for the last few months.

I think my technique is decent and at the beginning of a swim session I can keep up with the faster swimmers. However as I get tired my technique deteriorate and I'm not efficient anymore. I really still have to transfer my aerobic capacities in the pool.

As for now, I've really just been doing 500m or 750m sets - for a total of 1.5k sessions

I'm going to look for the "Fistwitch" and "Fish" program threads - thanks for the nice suggestions.

A little more specific then. Have you done a T-pace test yet?

If you are new to swimming, I'd highly recommend getting a session with a stroke instructor (not necessarily a swim coach), and have them look at your stroke. They will be able to recommend drills to refine your stroke, which will help more than just pounding out yards.

Training plans for swimming largely depend on your swimming ability background.

I follow the Cervelo Apple training plan, which entails starting my swim training after a 10 month break approximately 2 months out from my race season. Give me 3 weeks and I'm back where I ended last season. Of course, that won't work for everyone.

Most people swim "train" just to train, instead of really focusing on how to get your swim time DOWN.

If you are willing to put in 8-10,000 yards a week and suffer through the workouts (to the point where you sort of don't look forward to your next swim day), you will improve in weeks, not months.

No, I've never done any T-Test yet (Average of 3 x 100m right?) - I guess that's something on my todo list for tomorrow morning session.

Thanks John for recommending coaching, I'll definitively look into that.

As for stroke technique, I've also been really curious about all the Finnis "freestyler" and "forearm-fulcrum" paddles:

Do they help much?

Ok ok 1000m tt :)

Then what do I do with the time? Is there a "VDOT-like" calculator that's going to give me paces to plug in specific workouts? All the swimming plans I've seen here look pretty similar in my newbie eyes - are there usually different kind of sessions ( like intervals - Tempo - Endurance)?

Thanks again for your time guys, this is really useful.

OK, here's what you do...

1000 yard/meter time trial, get your average 100 yard/meter time

Take that time and add 15 seconds to it (some may argue 10 seconds), that would be your base send off time/100 for any workout you do. Lets say your average time is 1:45/100, your base send off time would be 2:00

If the workout calls for hard intervals then you swim it hard (come in faster than 1:45) and leave on that send off time you may be getting, if it says easy then come in slower than 1:45 and leave on 2:00. Multiply out for 200's, 300's etc...

Look up swim workouts in the swim threads. If you don't want to do that look for the waterproof book "workouts in a binder"

http://www.amazon.com/...335993678&sr=8-1

have fun :)

You could follow my condensed swim plan where I get to this point shortly after the warm up.
