Swim and bike have changed. Swim is now 1 lap (WooHoo!!!!!!!!! Suck it drafters)
More like suck it cheaters. The RD told me they're aware that every year some folks cut the course, exiting the water after just one lap.
The bigger reason for the change, though, is that now they can position safety teams inside the loop.

I've always wondered if that happened. Fucking assholes!
Whatever the reason, that's a huge benefit for swimmers like me.

i used 11-25 with quarq and was very please with splits...biggest thing is to get out and ride the course a couple times if you can. i was good with the run - or as "good" as you can be on the 1st time

It would be interesting to plot race results in excel from previous years and 2012 race and see whose swim times mysteriously increase by ~20-25 minutes

Seriously? People cutting out after one lap?? Why sign up for IM if you aren't going to do the distance.

Not knowing your background, but a good all around setup will help you on the second loop. Those hills are killer on the second loop.
Compact with a 12/25 bolted to a power meter and you will be set.

Agreed! I can't remember where I heard or read it but I remember seeing something about the average IMoo swim time being around 1:12. That seemed REALLY low!

I raced IMOO in 2012 and actually went to a 12-28. I liked having a good range of gears for that second loop!!

I have a standard w/ 12/25 & there's no way I'm going compact(I've got a Quarq & don't want to pay for another PM), so I'm considering going to 12/27 to compensate. Being someone who will probably be 6+ hours on the bike, I'm not competing for any AG slots. I just want to hit the run in better shape than my last IM so I'll give up a little power on the bike if it saves my legs some juice.

There are a couple small changes on the bike course. They lengthened the portion along Rimrock rd near transition to ease traffic flow. The route now follows a couple sidestreets in that area I believe.
To compensate for that added distance, the course takes Messerschmidt between Hwy G and 92, rather than going all the way into Mt. Vernon on G.
Yep, the course was slightly long last year and the changes correct the length as well as eliminating traffic concerns in Mt. Vernon.
Messerschmidt is a really fun road. Some climbing, but also some nice fast, straight descents. Great pavement too, and hardly any traffic- perfect for training!

There are some decent climbs for sure, a couple I'd call hard. Mostly it's just the relentlessness of the hills that gets you. Especially when it's hot and you are on the second lap. A bailout gear isn't a bad idea especially if you like to spin up hills, are big or just as backup if you get tired.
12-28 will be my choice with a standard cranks. Losing twenty more lbs also figures in.

I have not raced it, but I have ridden the course many, many times. My road bike has a standard 53/39 and TT has a 50/34. If I were to race the course, I would go standard with a 11-25 cassette. Just my $0.02.

The New Specialized Wind Tunnel
Will this be a game changer for Specialized, in both sales and product design, or will it not move the sales and design needle versus those in Specialized's competitive set?
