Dirk Bockel stiffed by his main sponsor from last year

I saw this today on Dirk's facebook page
"Wondering why my last yrs main sponsor still didn't pay? #PoorBehavior not good for the tri market to know I guess. #JustSaying"
I know we are not privy to all of the details or what the contract looks like, but that is a pretty crappy thing to do. These Pro’s need those sponsorship dollars to make their living if they are following through on their part of those contracts.
In situations like these this makes me want to boycott those companies.
Maybe the sponsor should be outed if Dirk followed through on his end of the contract?

If it is K-Swiss that has done this I think WTC should consider looking into what happen. I know this might not be WTC’s role, but Dirk is a top Pro (4th at Kona last year) and K-Swiss is one of WTC’s title sponsors. WTC should not just sit on the sidelines and let its athlete’s be treated this way.
If it’s K-Swiss that did this, I want to boycott buying anything from them. This makes it really hard when you go to an Ironman or 70.3 event and want to buy a shirt and everything is exclusively K-Swiss.
If anyone can help figure out who the sponsor is I think we should out them and see if there is any way as a community we could help Dirk get paid what his contract said he would be paid.
I would be open to any ideas, blast their facebook page, sign a petition, etc. There are some pretty creative minds here on Slowtwitch; we ought to be able to come up with something good.

I *believe* potentially by your assumption it's K-Swiss could result in a defamation lawsuit. You have to be really careful when making claims about a company via the internet. Especially when dirk states that it wasn't them.

Poor form on his side also. It leaves us doubting the integrity of ALL his sponsors as you've already illustrated.

Benny, to avoid this I didn't mention "sponsor" but defined main sponsor, and there was only one ...and usually is. Might not the one with the biggest logo tho.

Based on percentage of coverage, I would say his main sponsor was Luxembourg. Never trust Luxembourg.

Could you maybe add a little insight/color to the situation.
Such as, did this sponsor not pay you anything for the entire year?
Was there some type of clause in your contract that entitled you to a bonus payment for your performance in Kona that they didn't pay?
When were you supposed to of been paid? I.E. how long has this now gone on?
Does the sponsor have the financial wherewithal to pay you that you know of?
Is there any on going conversations between you and this sponsor about getting this issue resolved?
So far most of the comments on the post have centered on my original post that suggested it might be one of your other sponsors. I concluded it was probably not them and have redacted the post.
The issue of you not being paid I think should be discussed. I think others might be interested in finding out how often this might be happening to you and other Pro's. This is something that it needs to stop if this sport is going to grow on a Professional level.
There was an article posted last year about certain races/race director's that don't appear to be paying the Pro's their winnings in a timely manner. I think by calling those people out hopefully it helped get those pro's paid.
I would like to see the same thing happen here as long as you have complied with your contract with this sponsor (which we assume you have). I do tend to remind my friends time to time what happens when you assume something though.

What you are asking Dirk to provide is a bit of a no-win situation in most cases, especially since it is on a forum and is not a main op/ed type piece. I have not read Dirk's blog, website, etc. to know exactly where the info came from. So, I admit to more than a little a bit of ignorance in this situation.
Dan wrote this piece about race directors and their payments.
http://www.slowtwitch.com/...the_money__2272.html
Maybe he would write a piece about sponsors, but I 'suspect' it would be somewhat doubtful that too many pros would comment other than requesting to be anonymous. Bad on us for that, maybe? You can read Dan's piece and see why Dirk might not want to answer the questions that you have asked.
Dan also published this story about 'earning the money'.

It provides a bit of commentary to the other side. Again, I have more than a little ignorance in this situation, but the two op/ed pieces above do give all of us a few things to think about.

Pure speculation here, but wasn't there a big hoopla about Bockel joining Leopard-Trek?
And aren't bike sponsors usually an athletes biggest sponsor?
Maybe Blue wasn't thrilled with his leaving for Leopard-Trek?
Maybe I'm totally wrong!

you hit the nail on the head buddy. It's already pretty brave to put that one out there but of course I can't not go into details about it. You will know sometime soon. I wish I could answer all this question, I would love to provide insight then you would understand. Sorry for the short version here but time will tell.... all the best

I was thinking Peugot. That would be cool to be sponsored by a COOL car company!
