I was going to register for this one but the site is down, has been since Friday. Does anyone know the status of the race? If it's not going to happen, I need to rethink my mid season plans.

I just emailed Paul (the race owner), I am pretty sure this is just a mistake with the domain since they announced a new swim start this year and new start times. I will post when he gets back to me.

Just heard from Paul. The URL is being redirected by WTC to their new website. It will be down until it refreshes, which should be very soon.
As for the water temp, it really isn't that bad. I am a big wimp when it comes to cold water and I didn't mind the temp of this swim the 3 times I have done this race.

Agreed! A lot of people have mentioned that the Lake was rediculously cold. When I race there in 2010 it was perfectly fine. Boise made Ghost Lake feel like a hot tub in comparison.
Maybe the rumor comes from the conditions seen in the Ghost Lake Mitsubishi ads

I am going to race Calgary this year and am stoked to get a little redemption from 2010. I still have nightmares of JonnyO passing me multiple times on the run.

I am racing this year as well. I will have just come back from watching Jens Voigt crush it again at the Tour. I am going to bring back a tiny bit of his power and ride in the 53/11 the whole way, even up Horse Creek Road. :)
Jeff, it will be cool to watch you crush this race from well back, I am glad you put this on your calendar.

In 2010, wasn't it colder outside the water than in, at the start? Maybe that made the water feel warm. ;-) In 2011, I simply hadn't experienced water that cold before (I believe I heard 16C/61F) and it really screwed me up for the first 15 minutes. After that I warmed up and it was just like any other swim. But at the start I was shivering like crazy and couldn't catch my breath or maintain a rhythm. I will definitely do the race again (and I'd love to do IMCDA someday), so next time I will be better prepared mentally.

Yeah, 2010 the air temp was pretty cold, like 5C and raining while the water temp was about 15 or 16 which really isn't so bad.
Now Banff that year, 2010, that was cold. Water around 11C.

Yup colder airtemp in 2010, and it rained until 6am so the water felt fine.
And in 2011 due to the higher snowfall they had to open the dam up more to accomidate the melt off so more fresh cold glacier water coming in.

I enjoyed it, but I'm from Calgary so maybe I'm biased.
The swim is a bit cool but nothing crazy, it would probably be close or warmer than Escape from Alcatraz. So almost everyone wears a full wetsuit. The bike is a point to point ride and the overall elevation change is descending. So it can be a pretty fast course, especially if you're a strong cyclist. The roads in the area are pretty scenic, its sort of rolling prairie with the mountains close on the horizon. There's only one big "hill". The run is a very nice route through one of the city's large parks.
All in all its a pretty scenic course for a race that isn't any place exotic. The race doesn't fill up so if you're looking for a Vegas slot, and are pretty quick in your age cat, you might have a decent shot of getting your ticket to the World Champs here, which is a big plus.
Its a pretty well organized race overall but I guess thats all relative. I've never been to a race like Wildflower or anything like that so I have nothing grand to compare to, but no one gets lost on course, they don't run out of nutrition, no one's stuff goes missing. They have a sponsor hotel in downtown, good transportation, lots of volunteers, nice expo.

It was my first open water swim, besides a short wetsuit test in the Okanogan. I am quite happy I can say I finished it haha. Going again this year?

It is good. It is in it's 4th year and the owner/race directors are the same, so they are getting better and better.
They just announced a new swim start which will make the run to the bikes much better.
I point A to B bike is always way more fun than loops. A single loop (out and back) run is great too.
