Recording Rate & Imports to PowerAgent Quote | Reply

I'm continuing to struggle with all sorts of start-up issues with using my new Garmin 310XT (my first Garmin). Recently, I finally figured out how to import Garmin.tcx files into my preferred power evaluation software - PowerAgent. The first file transfer went without issues. All the data is there and all calculations (peak power, TSS, etc...) were calculated. When I transferred the second file, I received a message that the data was recorded with a variable recording rate and peak power, etc...could not be displayed. For this 2nd file, it does turn out the watch had somehow been reset to variable rate recording. However, after switching it back to recording every second and taking it out again today, today's file (the 3rd file I've imported) also gives me the same notification that the data was recorded in at a variable rate and peak power, etc...cannot be displayed.

What gives? Can an experienced 310XT user describe what I need to do to get the 310XT to record data so that variable recording rate is not used? I would have thought setting it to record every second would make this happen. Is there some other setting I'm missing? All three files were recorded using the Bike 1 settings so, other than the one variable recording rate blunder, they should have all been recorded under the same conditions.....

I only get the variable recording rate message when I import a brick session in from Garmin Training Center and I think it is the run portion that is causing that. In PowerAgent I only save the bike portion and all the data is there.

FYI when I export from Garmin Connect to PowerAgent I do not get normalized power or TSS. I have to export from Garmin Training Center to get that and I don't know why. Are you going from GC to PA and getting NP and TSS?

I have only tried to import bike-only workouts so far. Ultimately, I've been using Garmin Training Center to export the data. I export the .TDX file from GCT to a folder on my hard drive, then import it using PowerAgent. I have never figured out how to access the .TCX files in Garmin Connect. So far, I have one workout that gave me NP/TSS/ Peak power, etc...and two that gave me the variable data collection message and no NP/TSS/Peak power.....

However....when I initially transfer the data....I do direct the ANT agent to transfer the data to Garmin Connect first...that transfer screen comes up by default. Then, I open GTC and select [receive from device] in the [file] pull down menu. Is there a way to bypass the transfer to GC? Perhaps I did that without noticing it on the 1st file and have bungled the 2nd & 3rd files by going through GC to GTC...?

What if you just open GTC first and select receive from device?

In GC look just above the map and hit the "Share" button to export the file to the location of your choice. I only do this to upload to Strava.

I don't upload every ride to PowerAgent because of the hassle but if I want to see NP I have no choice. I wish the 310 would show NP like the other Garmin bike models do. I'm sure they are going to give that to the 910 so you are forced to upgrade.

I'll try that tonight.....

I know what you mean. The ONE thing I really like seeing is the peak power distribution (5 sec, 10 sec, 30 sec..etc... for certain laps. Turns out that's the ONE thing I'm having trouble getting in ANY software package. GC/GTC doesn't show it, TrainingPeaks doesn't show it....PowerAgent does if I can just figure out the trick to this variable recording message. hopefully bypassing GC will be the solution.

That worked. The peak power, TSS, normalized power....it's all there.

Cool. Glad I could help. Now if you want it to go to GC or Strava just for record keeping or sharing purposes you can export it from GTC to GC.

Believe me....it exports itself automatically to GC. I have to make sure to either not be logged in to any Garmin site or turn off the automatic transfer in ANT agent or it goes all by itself.

FYI, you can get this data in Power Agent for the entire ride and/or each lap, but also for any time period of your ride. Go to the detail tab, right click and hold at the beginning of the time period, then release at the end of the time period. Not only will it show the info above, it'll show every detail that is available for the entire ride, i.e. max speed, avg HR, peak power, etc... Allows you to really home in on any section of a ride.

I used PA exclusively until about a month ago when I started up with Golden Cheetah. GC has a few key things that PA doesn't have and vice-versa. So now I upload to both.....
