That field on that course is precisely why draft legal is necessary. How on earth they expect to have a fair race is beyond me.

x10!!
i just don't see how they're not gonna draft. it seems there will be some huge packs out of the swim that just aren't gonna seperate and those guys aren't gonna sit up and ride 15th wheel in line. they'd be like a quarter mile back from the first guy in line!!
regardless, should be FUN to see what happens

But the course is pretty hilly that could break them up.

I agree and disagree on this...ie see both sides..would it make sense (I know you will let me know if it doesn't!) to possibly "shrink" the drafting zone? Still keep the races not draft legal but make it a one bike length zone? Then at least you are not being penalized for an impossible situation, but you aren't creating a peloton and simple strategy. You would still be forced to make a move if you are working to the front as you would need to pass?

Its very fair. lead on the bike or stay the appropriate distance back. If they all have to follow the rules, its fair.

I agree, they should just shorten the draft zone in certain non-draft olympic distances. This way you still can use a TT bike, and the stronger bikers can get away if they choose, or atleast make it hard for those riding their wheel. On a road bike it would be alot more difficult to escape.
This(the inevitable tight bunch riding in non-draft olympic race with a strong field) is why I think if ITU is ever going to change to a non-draft format they need to use the 70.3 distance. There is room to make an escape at that length of bike (and the weaker cyclist will fall off the paceline more easily at this distance). Those who push beyond themselves on the bike will also pay exponentially more on the run b/c of the distance of the bike and run. So the bike is a real factor again in the race. The guys will still be finishing a flatter course in 3:35-3:45 if you have a very elite field(with a very fast swim and still very important swim, and guys running 1:10 or better), so the race is not so long that the speed is taken out.
One idea to take care of the initial paceline of athletes coming out of T1, so there are no unavoidable drafting penalties, could be a rule in place for the first 10km of the bike you are allowed to be within 5 or 7 meters on the bike, and after that it goes up to 10 meters, and possibly within the final 10km of the bike the draft zone goes up to 15 meters when things are getting spaced out again. You would just need some sort of banner you ride underneath for these draft zones to take effect.

The last time I did it there was about a 4' rise over a short bridge. Brutal stuff.... The course does have a lot of turns and parts of the course are narrow. Should be interesting.

The pro Men's field is funny, it looks stacked but really Greg Bennett should win if he's in any kind of shape. He's by far the best Olympic non-draft guy on that list.
I'll take Kelly Williamson for the ladies.
How does Danny Hart sit down with balls that big?

There are far better athletes on that list than some of the names you chose. Not that you're American and biased or anything... Doubt a US athlete will be in the top 2.

Not sure what world you live in, but head to head Potts is at least a match for Greg, if not a notch above. Certainly not "by far" slower. I watched all of these guys personally last year in the Toyota series(7 non draft races), and Potts was the most consistent. Cameron Dye did well on tough bike courses and could put time on all of these guys on the ride, including when Gomez raced. A couple times he held on for the wins, it will be fun to see if his run has improved at all. This is a flat race, so he probably will not be there, unless he is in a solo swim break with Potts. About 1/2 the time he hangs onto Potts in the swim so could be dangerous with a 30 second lead on the bike. Kind of matters if there will be any marshaling back in the group too..

I listed four of the top five finishers from last year. Also, three of the top five in 2011 were Americans. (Reed in 2nd, Dye in 3rd, Collins in 5th)
Feel free to continue pointing out my "american" bias though.

Potts for fastest swim,
O'Donnell for fastest girlfriend,
Kalashnikov for fastest name,
Docherty for fastest flight in / flight out turn around.
Fastest come from behind win at the line: Courtney Atkinson.
Now to the supporting race :)
Struggling to get past a Mary Beth run being chased down by Rinny. Only person I see upsetting that if she's there and learnt to ride in line is Hollie Avil.

Amberger & Dye OTB together in lead; Yoder came off about :40 behind them w/ someone between them.
Big group of about 10 came off 10-20sec behind Yoder.
*Don't hang your hat on the accuracy of this as I'm just getting texts from someone spotting.

Women off the bike:
Kaye & Haskins 1 & 2
Luxford +30
McCarty +60
Peterson +90
Then another group including MBE & Rinny behind that group.
At 4mi mark, Amberger is leading.
