Romney should challenge Obama to have a debate every month starting now

If I was Romney I would challenge Obama to have a series of 2 hour debates. No moderator canned questions. Let each candidate bring the questions that they would like to ask each other. If there is a moderator he/she should just be there to maintain a civil discussion. In the name of fairness, I will also allow Obama have his teleprompter.
Some topics:
Immigration
Taxes
Energy
Environment
Foreign Policy
Health Care
Education
If Obama declines the invitation, then follow him everywhere he goes and counter attack his presentations once his gone.
As much as I didn't like Gingrich I think this was one of his best ideas...

Did you really think the almost nightly GOP debates provided anything useful?

I assume the candidate would also have the opportunity to answer his own questions? If so, I think that would be an improvement over the moderator-provided questions we've seen in the GOP debates.
I assume also that the seven topics you list are proposed overall topics for seven potential debates, and that the questions brought by the candidates are supposed to pertain to those topics?
It seems to me that another good topic would be "The Debt." You may have considered that to be covered under "taxes," but it's really only the Obama side that equates the two.

Phew...it's a good thing that the OP suggested "every month" in his title. So, what's he proposing - 7 debates? Versus the 20 they held in the primaries?

Or, alternately, have the candidates set out their views clearly and concisely in written form, encourage people to educate themselves on the options and allow the current administration, whatever you think of it, to actually govern the country.
Why the same people who criticized Obama for being long on style and short on substance would support yet more debates is beyond me.

And I'd be good with none. The time of the televised debate has come and gone. They aren't debates, they are a series of short stump speeches that have little to nothing to do with the supposed question that was asked.
Unless you find them amusing as an exercise in the absurd.
It is April and I tired of this campaign six months ago. I can't imagine the pain we will feel here in Ohio between now and November, I won't be able to watch a TV program live until December to keep from killing myself because of political TV ads.

Candidates can do that right now with websites, if they dare to be "clear" and "concise." I think there is potential value in a dialectical confrontation of views, although in this case there would be far more value if Gary Johnson was also included in that dialectic.

Seconded. But if we could have an organization that checks facts respond after every answer I'd pay attention.

So how many people, say % of those registered to vote, need to see these things to make a decision? 20%?

But people don't respond to "dialectical confrontation of views" they respond to whoever looks and sounds presidential and who forgets the third agency.
I'm no fan of Rick Perry but his campaign was sunk by a brain fart that wouldn't rank in my top ten for today - I just don't know what purpose it serves.
A written/email debate? - that I could get luke-warm enthusiastic about.

I bet if we locked them in a room and made them watch debates until they decided we could get this election done before memorial Day.

The debate on these topics should be framed in such a way where each candidate has to answer what are the both the strengths and weaknesses of your party's approach vs that of your opponent and how would be the best way to compromise in order to best move forward.

What matters is people intelligent enough to think for themselves, since everyone else will let those thought leaders do their thinking for them. Those who are smart enough to think for themselves will be more interested in the dialectic of views rather than what the candidates spoon-feed them on their websites.
Besides,
I
personally would find the confrontation infinitely more interesting. :)

I think a one-on-one, unstructured, sit down dialogue between the two would be fascinating. Neutral territory, three hours in length, anything goes. No moderator, no spectators present, no time limit on topics. Hell, make it pay-per-view and use the proceeds to shore up social security for another decade or so. That ticket would sell like cold lemonade on a hot day.

Good point. Most people are zombies and will vote for the party they always vote for. This is more intended for the 20% independents which in the end decide who wins.

Only for those who were VERY interested, so I agree that too many debates is bad. If I were the pub strategist at this point, I'd probably just let Obama keep "leading", as that's working pretty well for the pub side. lol This is one of those times that pubs have all the data on their side, so dems will be against hard numbers and such, and more into the personal attack strategy.

I don't that the time for debates has gone. In their present format? Yes. But, get back to the good ol'days where they actually answered the questions...and I think there is some value left.
I feel sorry for you being in Ohio. I remember living in Michigan in the 70's and 80's and being bombarded with ads during the elections. Thankfully, I've been thoroughly insulated after having lived the last 20+ years in Chicago, New York, San Francisco and the SF burbs. The races were never in doubt in those places :-)

Ha! That would be interesting, but I think the debates would be difficult for Romney, because to be effective, he'd not only have to know his own positions thoroughly, but would need to know Obama's record, both what he has done through congress and regulation, as well as what Obama has said of his preferred outcomes in the myriad of policy. That way, when Obama tries to run as the "blank slate" again, Romney can point to the reality of the known.

Obama is a tp junkie. It is no secret.
I haven't seen Romney using one. Maybe he should for fairness purposes.

What's especially sad is that when they ask the focus groups after the debates are over, they outwardly state that they like one candidate over another because he "looks presidential."
Hey, even I'll admit that I can be fooled by appearance and style, but notice I used the word "fooled," i.e. I recognize that that is not a good reason to vote for someone. Most people don't.
I think every president since Kennedy has been elected eithe a) because of their appearances or b) because of some bonus or backlash from their predecessor (although the Democrats did their damndest to find someone that couldn't look better than grandpa Bush I).
