Of course Lance knows that he would not stand a chance in an ITU race, although he could get to T-2 with the bunch I'm sure. He can shampoo and blow dry with the best of them. I guess in this day and age of instant messaging and tweeter, the old bullshit banter with buddies is just not taken well. Well one wonders if Lance had said something like Beach lifeguards are glorified babysitters with a tan, if Monty would have the same cavalier attitude. Nobody likes to hear people commenting on their profession and making it look like it's a "joke" (although i didn't get that from the tweet). So I can see why Simon was upset and why others have jumped on this. It is what happens when you are passionate about something. Emotions play a factor.
Better add: This isn't a knock against Monty at all, I am just saying when it is really personal (something you love or your chosen career), people tend to read things differently.

Or, as was mentioned - people today have psyche's that are dick skin thin. I suppose that if Simon does not like it - he could just go out and BEAT Lance to prove a point (and ask Lance how he likes "them apples"). But that would be no fun on the Twittersphere.

I'm positive that the ITU circuit contains the best athletes in triathlon - just like it did in my era. They are certainly FIT and results from the ITU crew in 70.3 racing and Xterra racing indicate this.
Regarding Vidal's file: Neither speed nor distance is shown, but even if the bike ride were a little long - based on that file (1:00:40 of riding time), they weren't going very FAST - especially considering it was draft legal.
Are you sure you got this right?

As a lifeguard of 4 years, I can totally LOL at that statement because it is so true even if it is a highly exaggerated oversimplification. Just like I can laugh about my PhD that I am working on really being a "Post hole digger" degree or an attempt to be "Piled higher and Deeper" or "Potential heavy Drinker".

No no no, Twitter is the heart felt ideals and values of each and every twit (or is it tweat?) that is ever sent - please do not infer any humor, jest or any function other than the worst possible intent of the reported teeter....or tweatee? I mean, what is sent via the internet is mean to be taken in each and every instance as gospel as well thought out as the bible (insert your denomination here) itself.

Certainly, fitness is a massive component of ITU racing and being fast. By "fast" I was referring - mostly - to the significant ANaerobic work capacity that is ALSO required for ITU racing - swim start, "moves" on the bike, the surge-y nature of even the run. All those require a significant "fast-twitch" component. Non-draft racing - even at (relatively) fast speeds - is much more of a steady state effort (especially long course), meaning it's largely - or even entirely - slowtwitch muscles.
Especially on the bike, "fast" isn't really a reference to absolute speed; it's more of a reference to how quickly you need to be able to act.
It's an idiomatic expression (or meant to be one); I want to say I got it from Joel Filliol, but I might be putting words in Joel's mouth. Perhaps it's not as good as I thought.
Maybe this is better? "for ITU, you need to be able to RACE; for non-drafting, you need to be able to ENDURE"? Some variation on that. Open to suggestions.

Wow....you anti Lance folks are just itching for anything to bitch about. That "shampoo, blow dry, etc..." joke has been around the Tri scene for years. LA is hardly original in using it, even if he tweaked it a little to aim at the ITU folks. It has always been a friendly poke in the ribs among triathletes, and even from single sporters poking a little fun.

Bill: Lance, what are your thoughts on that crank?
Lance: Well, it is the right length for your body size.
Bill: No, it's not. Most men my height do not have a crank this size.
Lance: What are we talking about Mr.President?
Bill: Nevermind.

There once was a cyclist named Lance,
Who used to win races in France.
He's now racing tri's,
And that has the guys,
Who race in Kona just shitting their pants.

Funny that Lance Armstrong is laughing about ITU racing being draft legal I guess you could say the Tour de France is also about 21 day of drafting folioed by a Time trial!
Just cause its different and may not play to his strength its bad.

First- I'm glad you clarified the fitness part, because it sure seemed like you were dissing ITU athletes ; )
Second- I do not know the definition of idiomatic (I will look it up), but I do know the definition of fast. To respond to what you wrote in a Rappstaresque manner: I do not think it means what you say you meant it to mean, otherwise your response to me would have been much longer than it was.
Third- You should study the bike speeds (approximate - since we don't know the actual distance) of the last 12 months of WTS racing. There is some interesting info there. My take on it based on looking at the results, is that the bike segments are often NOT fast and that while the speed/power/effort on the bike is certainly up and down - a "significant anaerobic work capacity" as you stated, is NOT often required. The race dynamic is such that it's simply not in the best interest of the "pack" to ride hard. (increased parity in the swim - and to a lesser extent, the run - certainly has something to do with it)
Fourth- I'm going to write my opinions about the bike leg in draft legal races on my little website. Stand by.

Jimmy....just ended up on your website to read your "upcoming article" on the bike leg in draft legal racing, but then I stumbled upon this:
http://www.riccitello.com/blog/full/france_camp
Forget about this curent debate....tell us more about your France Alps Camp. Too late for this year, as it coincides with a family vacation but sounds like something that should be done in the future. I know most of those bike routes really well. Last time there was 2007:
