I'm currently only registered for two, but will end up doing three IM's again this year, as well as a few shorter distances to keep things ticking over:

As for why? I like to train. I love to travel. I enjoy racing different events. I have few friends ;-)

I know not for the faint of heart...I started this sport just over 2 years ago and it has become a lifestyle. Its gotten my whole family in shape, my 13yr daughter now wants to race. My son who is 18 wants no part...no shocker there. If my wife did not support me so much I could never do it. I leave most days at 3:45 a.m. the gym is about 1 hour away. I get in 2.5-3 hours before work, then return around 4 to get in another 2.5-3. Its tough with 4 disciplines swim, bike, run and weights. But family and kids games always come before training...its in my blood now. I just hope my body can keep up the pace. Every few months I take a week off to recoup.

Wow! That's an inspiring schedule. The best to you this season.

I did the 3 miles swim at the Nanticoke venue. It was fun, but a challenge! Proud I did it.

Not to hijack the thread but I'd like to know more about you. Job (pro triathlete?)? Spouse? How in the world can you manage 30 hours a week and afford all of that racing (not to mention the gear involved)?

No hi-jack it is the reason for the thread. "how and why" you picked them.

A Newborn: [In reply to] Quote | Reply

As a promise to my wife I am doing 7 or 8 sprints and all close to home. With a 2 month old, I am finding training is tough. I can bust out a sprint with little time but keep some high intensity. I will do some last minute TT's and maybe some road and mountain bike races "if the moons align and life allows it!"

Buuuut...my family comes first...races are for fun and they don't pay the bills.

LOL well I wish I was good enough to go PRO...Not there but you never know. I am an IT Executive for a large health care organization. I have owned several companies and I guess you can say done well for myself. I am an over achiever and don't like to sleep as it wasting time in my mind. My kids are older so I'm not as tied down at home as there is no way I would have been able to do this a few years earlier. Based on my job I have a flexible schedule on what time I come in and leave. So that affords me to have early days like today where I am leaving now to get in a 40mi ride and 1hr in the pool. Yet I'm taking my wife out to dinner tonight. So everyone is happy...I don't spend much time doing anything outside or Family, Work and Triathlons. It has become part of my everyday, from planning my nutrition, to work outs etc.

With regards to the races a few are obviously close. Chicago which in my mind is one of the best events I have still done todate was the venue for my first race, again I jumped into the deep end. Flordia was my first 70.3 and wanted to challenge myself so I followed it up last year with Eagleman. My schedule this year is about the same as last year outside of IM AZ it was that or Cozumel and I have heard good things about IMAZ.

I have spent a small fortune on equipment as in most sports starting out like golf and skiing. Once you have it your for the most part set...I bought an Argon bike from Cadence Cycles in Philly after my first two races as there was a huge difference in the equipment. Speed was very noticeable and worth every penny.

I have over the last 2.5 years just increased my training...when I started I struggled running 5 miles. I guess your body just continues to adapt depending on how hard you push it and how you fuel it. If I train today for 2-3 hours I am not wiped out. I think I have trained so much that my body is just use to the recovery. After my first IM I thought I would be sore and laid up for at least a day. I went out to dinner with family and friends after the race. While my joints for sure felt sore I was back to "light" training withing 5 days.

I dont no TRI Expert and don't claim to be, but I love the sport, love racing and love meeting all the great people I have met at the various races I have gone to. It is a great community of athletes who support great causes...I got into this sport only because of Jon Blais. His story is where it all started http://www.ironman4als.com, http://www.waronals.com

Always looking to give back if I can help in any way just ask...

Awesome! I had the great fortune of being in the elevator at the host hotel for Eagleman last year with Blazemans parents. I very much enjoyed talking to them for the 2 minute ride and after for 30 minutes or so. I will see you at Eagleman. Still trying to get a room at the host hotel. I do have one for the day of though.

Cool thread. I had been hoping to do a bit of running, but that isn't going to happen :(
Would have been nice to take another stab at Eagleman aquavelo, but my wife nixed that for this year.

-) 1st crit, done a couple weeks ago. Might try some more
-) 1st ITT: May 5th
-) 1st open water swim race: May 13th
-) Columbia Tri Oly: 2 legs of relay with wife: May 20th
-) Celebration Sprint: 2 legs of relay with wife June 24th
-) Rev3 Half Full 70.3 Aquavelo

I'd like to throw in some more ITTs and/or bike races. I'll probably do a hill climb ITT that is close by in mid summer. My main limiter is family time; 4 small kids and the wife don't love giving up parts of weekends, so I try to avoid any race that involves travel.
